I remember going to my first local tournament with my brother. At the time I didn't (and still don't) own Ultimate so I only had Sm4sh experience to work with. It was also the first time I used a Gamecube controller the local provided, so since we arrived an hour early I used the time to get used to Ultimate with my Kirby, Mario and Palutena with the new controller. I was nervous towards winners finals, but I managed to place 3rd(keep in mind there were like 6 or 7 others including my twin bro). South Africa 's Smash Bros. scene is very small but progressing. It was my first time playing smash with other people besides my brother in a competition environment since online was not an option for me. I'll be playing there my 4th time this Saturday.
I've been there. Ultimately, your first time, expect to get eliminated immediately. That's okay. It happens to literally half of the regulars. It's the backbone of the whole event; we still have a great time, and occasionally win the lotto and get to play against a pro/semipro, even do respectably. Personally, my first tournament was my single best, playing a top ten player in state and losing primarily to my own misinputs and unfamiliarity with a new character. It was a great learning experience, and I really could have won. My last tourny was my first time getting eliminated round one, but I usually only make it one or two to begin with. I'm still by far the best player in my social circle, so the tourny is my real game night. It's worth going.
Do it anyways you don’t have to win zero went to his first tournament and then said to his mom I’m to scared go home if you show up and play you did better than zero at his first tournament
Please don't get discouraged because you guys go 0-2. It's going to happen ALOT. But that is how you learn. You learn from losing, not winning. When I first started going to tourneys (2014) I went 0-2 for months, I would occasionally win a set for the 1-2 but generally went 0-2. I went from that to being a threat to the best players in my state, with the occasional upsets. Now, my state has pretty good people so depending on where you live it might be easier or harder. But basically, just because you keep losing does not mean you are not improving. And whatever you do, DON'T expect to win, or you will be disappointed. Unless you are MK Leo 2 or something, you are not going to win your first tournament.
You made this video literally at the perfect time. I’m going to my first tournament in like, 3 days and I’m practically shaking with anxiety. Thanks for the advice, and reminding me I should try my best to have fun too :-)
Don't be sad if you go 0-2. And try to make a friend/ training partner you can go with often. You'll be able to motivate each other/ view your progress compared to each other. Good luck !

@@jaidsalgado Well, I'm an average player, but I managed to pull through the finals at least; I was so close but I got that far surprisingly, and I went in with very low expectations as well with Kirby as my main along with C.Falcon, Ness, Sonic and a few others, but mainly Kirby.

When I was playing Smash 4 and getting more into the competitive side of it, I told myself I'd go to tournaments starting with Ultimate. At the time I got onto the local Discord servers, there was a relatively staple 32-64 player monthly and some ~10 player weeklies emerging but I never felt like attending these even though they were all less than an hour from me. Then someone spontaneously decided to organize an event at ~10 minutes distance and because I had nothing to do I just went there. The tournament felt more like a meetup at someone's house with a small tournament at its core which helped to get to know the individual players better. Funnily enough because the tournament was announced spontaneously (1 day before it took place) and the venue was conveniently located it was the first tournament for 5 of the 10 attendees. After playing some friendlies with someone I have yet to defeat in bracket and who has become one of my closest friends in the local scene, I already realized some areas of my gameplay I could improve on. I ended up in 5th/10 after a last hit game 3 I lost against another one of the new people. The "veterans" or "regulars" of the scene were very happy to see this many newcomers and I was told as the youngest attendee that I should keep attending tournaments. Which is what I did: I went to several weeklies, 3rd/10 and 5th/12 being my best placements so far and three bigger tournaments. At the first one, I went 0-5 in Round Robin pools even losing to people I was seeded higher than only because I was extremely nervous. I've since dropped out going 1-2 at the two other events. I don't regret going to that improvised event at all since it introduced me to a very nice and open community and helped me improve in Smash. It actually led me to found a Smash club at my school with ~12 people, some of them also wanting to go to tournaments one day. So if you have the possibility to go to a tournament and really enjoy the game, it is a valuable and absolutely necessary experience to improve at the game.
About to go to my first tourney in two hours, been a casual player since N64 and never really thought I was good enough. But this local tourney has an amateur bracket and it’s free to join, so going to dip my toes into that before going to their higher bracket
I wanna say if you are going to a locals in your town do not expect a ton of setups. I think the smallest local I went to had only 2 setups. One for the tournament and the other for friendlies. It was in the back of a small games store but was still a really fun time. They even had free pizza and drink! So don't skip out on a tournament based on its size.
thanks, this actually made me want to join a local tournament in an a event im going to even though im going to get my ass kicked. at least im less nervous right? also what happens if i dont have a controller and only my switch? does that mean i cant enter?
I went like 0-2 for the most part for about my first year of competing at the end of Smash 4. Now I'm one of the better players in Central Florida and all those losses feel much more worthwhile. If you really want to play competitively, the sooner you start the more you'll get out of the game is all I have to say. Great video for newcomers.
I live in Germany and the next weekly is about 100miles away. I only have the chance to do online tournaments, but I gave up getting competitive cuz of the circumstances. Maybe I'll practice a year now and then participate.
@@swazzey116 I'm playing Smash since 2015 and back then it wasn't serious, but then in 2017 I found the competitive scene and discovered the new and amazing side of Smash bros. I went to my first tournament in a while yesterday and people said that I did well, the problem was that I mis input a lot and even SD'd a couple of times. I think I was nervous and let the nerve get to me when I was playing. I play online way too much and it felt weird playing offline for the first time in a while. As a Pikachu main, doing some combos offline change completely from online to offline so it's something to get used too.
Additional questions 1. should I switch to game cube controller or to stay with the pro controller 2. If there is a tie do both players get a point or none? 3. What does things like 2-2 mean? 4. Can I bring people just to watch? 5. Is choosing a secondary good?
You haven't gotten a reply by anyone so I'll just answer them. Please take note that I haven't gone to a tournament yet (going to one tomorrow) so this information should be taken cautiously, This is just what I know collectively from smash. After I get a feel for a few tournaments I might change this up a bit if any of these are wrong. 1. You can use whichever controller you feel the most comfortable with. Switching from a pro controller to a game cube and vice versa can be a big change so stick with what you like. 2. Very rarely do rounds of a match end in ties so it shouldn't be something to worry about but if it does happen then then there is a 1 stock 3 minute round but that might vary from where you are. 3. Things like 2-2 mean that you won two matches and lost 2 matches, so with 1-2 it would be you won one match and lost two matches and ect.ect.. 4. Yes but I don't know entirely myself, If it says otherwise in the rules you have then it would be a no. I am aware that there are 'cheering' and 'coaching' rules, saying stuff like "let's go!" And "you got this" are considered cheering and are okay but giving advice while a match is going is considered coaching and is not good. But you can ask for advice after the match. 5. Personally I would think it's better to focus on your main then another character. Devoting your time to one thing can prove fruitful in most situations. When you get better and you think you can or just want to play as another character go for it! But that's just my opinion. :)
Matthew M go with whatever you feel most comfortable with because the controllers most likely won’t give people a edge against you because of the controllers but if it’s one you’re not used to it can hinder you
I only went to one local and I lost both my matcha and got scared and sad and I never went back because I’m scared that someone will get mad at me for winning and I don’t know what to do

DEF bring headphones and an audio splitter that will allow you to hear the game and give your opponent the change to plug in his headset as well. It is like 5 bucks on amazon.

Hey Juggleboy, I'm about to go to a tourney next month, and since Taiwan is a small ass country, the only two locals I could go to is already against the bests in my country, how do u maintain a good mindset when you play intimidating opponents?
@@gamedogalameda I got deleted, but I happen to play friendlies with one of the best Ness mains in the region and learnt a lot from him(Ness main myself). I'd say going to tourneys made me learn more than labbing things blindly, still worth the trip!
Generally, you won't bring your own consoles to these events. Often times, they will offer a waived venue fee if you do, but that will vary by tournament. But they will only want a regular switch since you can't project the switch Lite onto a tv
Yeah ik im a bit late but damn, im nervous lol. Im going to my first local in 3 days, and im trying to make sure im as ready as possible. Ive played smash a lot, played sm4sh casually through the whole duration. Played smash ultimate for 1100 hours, and i somehow still dont feel like im ready. Im in the local discord and have every character in elite smash, but im still scared ill go 0-2. Part of the reason for that is that litterally 5 of the top 10 players in my country (belgium) are coming (at a 32 ppl tournament somehow lmao). My first match will be the nr5 (first seed) and after that it will probably be like seed 16/17. I just hope i can beat them. Anyway, im just going to have some fun and play my best. Maybe even make a upset? That would be cool. Anyway, ill update this comment after saturday.
Uhhh, I don't have a local Smash scene lol. I live in Turkey and Turkey is probably the only country where you could call Smash Bros an unpopular game.

At a local tournament I was at in smash I almost won the first match got dominated in most other one on one matches I didn't win any one on one matches at the tournament but I won one team match and one triple threat that's it basically I've won over 10,000 matches against the computer in smash games won about 100 against my friends I'm better than all my friends at it I've beat 5 out of the 6 smash games on classic with all characters it's the only game series that I ever got attached to on a day to day basis I switched to speedrunning competitively many other games I still do smash bros alot but mostly play other games I speedrun and play competitive and do some just casual gaming
Correct! Most tournaments run a double elimination bracket, meaning you don't get out until you lose twice. So going 1-2 means you won 1 set, but lost 2
Aries Omega no it’s at every tournament because there is always the one that just wants to smell to make sure everyone can be near them for very long. It’s not just a us thing it’s in Canada as well

Matthew M go with whatever you feel most comfortable with because the controllers most likely won’t give people a edge against you because of the controllers but if it’s one you’re not used to it can hinder you
If you wanna reach your full potential you should use a gc or pro controller
I won 1 match and lost my second. Spammed me with the lazer canon as samus. Still fun. I've been practicing hundreds of hours since
I only went to one local and I lost both my matcha and got scared and sad and I never went back because I’m scared that someone will get mad at me for winning and I don’t know what to do
Man I wish I could go to a local, doesn't really seem like there is anything around where I live. Anyway you should continue to go, its good to meet new people
Thanks for the tips you’ve just earned a sub my friend 😊
I live 10 mins from Xanadu! I can’t wait to go in these next few weeks
Good luck!
DEF bring headphones and an audio splitter that will allow you to hear the game and give your opponent the change to plug in his headset as well. It is like 5 bucks on amazon.
I need to do this for sure. Thanksss
I picked a bad time to get into tournaments
same here man- pain.
Same
I’m quite young (a few months over 13) and I’m starting to play a little better at ultimate. Do you guys think I can try a tournament ?
Age doesn't rlly matter. We just need to see some gameplay footage. Age isnt a factor in skill
Don't worry about your age, I went at around 14. It's a bit of getting used to but you can make friends quick and you'll be surprised at how odd it is to become good friends with adults, since it's about the game not the age
Hey Juggleboy, I'm about to go to a tourney next month, and since Taiwan is a small ass country, the only two locals I could go to is already against the bests in my country, how do u maintain a good mindset when you play intimidating opponents?
How did it go?
@@gamedogalameda I got deleted, but I happen to play friendlies with one of the best Ness mains in the region and learnt a lot from him(Ness main myself). I'd say going to tourneys made me learn more than labbing things blindly, still worth the trip!
Samsuke thanks for the update :) hope you have success in future tournaments
@@SammuDayo wow that's crazy, I wonder what your locals are like. It must be so much easier to be the best in your country 😅
I live in Micbigan and am having trouble finding any tournaments
Do you know of any tournaments in Ontario? Because, I can’t find any on google.
I Have A Question? What Is A Prefix On Player Registration?
If i could find a tournament i think i could do pretty well with my ken
Even though I’m in the FGC I love watching a lot of other parts of esports, and my First serious local was Tekken 7. Amazing local.
Just one question, do you need to bring your own console and if so then are switch lites allowed
Generally, you won't bring your own consoles to these events. Often times, they will offer a waived venue fee if you do, but that will vary by tournament. But they will only want a regular switch since you can't project the switch Lite onto a tv
@@Juggleboy thank you so much this answered all my questions
BUT also, if you bring deodorant, please don't fill the entire room with it
Oh also don’t show off you have a fight stick because they’ll now your a Ryu or Ken main right away
The part about deodorant is very important. First few tournaments had me sweating alot because of nerves T_T.
Thx
Uhhh, I don't have a local Smash scene lol. I live in Turkey and Turkey is probably the only country where you could call Smash Bros an unpopular game.
Really loving your content man, it's probably time for me get going and assist to a local tournament(Dont worry, i'll use deodorant).
I'm used to using joy cons
I didn't expect a 2 stock 3:00 minutes medium items random stage hazerds on 35 heroes lag on Ssbu online LOL
Im taking this Tips! Today is my first tournament...Wish me luck
4 weeks late but howd it go?
@@Patukah1879 It went as everyone expected i got Rekt But at least some stocks i could took
@@ThePossesedRuby Nice, I plan on going to my first tournament this summer, any tips or expectations that I should know? Besides the fact that I'll probably go 0-2 lol
@@Patukah1879 Welp i reccomend some Warmup before your Matches or fighting a Level 9 CPU and have fun
1v1 me in Smash ult :)
Is there an age limit for participating in local tournaments?
Atl Aster 13 is the limit age or other tournaments don’t have a age requirement
in my first tournament there were a s**t ton of jokers and little mac
Philippines is the best
I live in the uk and i cant find any tournaments to go to :(
You see I wanted my butt whooped but that didn't happen...
I went to a tournament 10 days after buying the game, I absolutely got smashed but it still was fun
Is going 0-2, 1-2 and 2-2 for a match or a tournament, I don’t understand it, I think it’s win loss ratio?
Correct! Most tournaments run a double elimination bracket, meaning you don't get out until you lose twice. So going 1-2 means you won 1 set, but lost 2
Are there usually age limits?
Usually not!
how long would a tournament usually be?
Depends how many people enter. Expect like 2-3 hours if 30 or more people enter
My reigon usally has 50 to 70 peaple on average and other parts times is 100 plus
A lack of deodorant
I don't know about tournaments in the us but the smelling problem is not that huge in germany. Is it really so extreme in the us ?
Aries Omega no it’s at every tournament because there is always the one that just wants to smell to make sure everyone can be near them for very long. It’s not just a us thing it’s in Canada as well
Idk about tournaments, but there are too many stank ass teen boys at my high school already, so maybe
I use joycons I don’t own a pro con or GC controller so what do I do?
Become a joycon God
If you have the money, buy one!
If not, you'll just have to wait or get a job. After all, dishes don't wash themselves!
Expect pain
I'm too nervous to show up lmao
I'm going to try a tournament using a n64 controller !!
Expect a really smelly room that makes you play worse because it's unbearable
What about single joycon?
bruh never find a tournament in sweden
I can’t really afford a pro controller or gamecube controller, will i be made fun of for using Joy-Cons
You won't. The smash community is basically reverse bullying. You'll get more left out the better your situation honestly
Idk maybe. I hope you don't tho
My experience
I found all 8 years old except 2 or 3 that they were 30 years old thats all
PD: i won the tournament
Bruh Iowa is horrible when it comes to smash tournaments.
If one happens it is casual or has a bad ruleset :(
Juggleboy:most people use GameCube controllers but, some use pro controllers too. Me:uh, is handheld mode allowed?
What if I don't have facebook.
make one
@@MetallicDZN No.
@@AshenDemon just use the site i dont think they make you log in
@@MetallicDZN No I don't want to use Facebook I hate it.
@@MetallicDZN Plus most social media platforms pretty much force you to sign in to do anything. The only one I know that doesn't is UA-cam.
I’m going to my first tournament 😅 I’m scared
How'd you do ?
