{ أَهُمۡ خَيۡرٌ أَمۡ قَوۡمُ تُبَّعٖ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ مُجۡرِمِينَ }
[Surah Ad-Dukhān: 37]
Muhammad Junagarhi:
کیا یہ لوگ بہتر ہیں یا تبع کی قوم کے لوگ اور جو ان سے بھی پہلے تھے۔ ہم نے ان سب کو ہلاک کردیا یقیناً وه گنہ گار تھے.[[یعنی یہ کفار مکہ کیا تبع اور ان سے پہلے کی قومیں، عاد وثمود وغیرہ سے زیادہ طاقت ور اور بہتر ہیں، جب ہم نے انہیں ان کے گناہوں کی پاداش میں، ان سے زیادہ قوت و طاقت رکھنے کے باوجود ہلاک کردیا تو یہ کیا حیثیت رکھتے ہیں؟ تبع سے مراد قوم سبا ہے۔ سبا میں حمیر قبیلہ تھا، یہ اپنے بادشاہ کو تبع کہتے تھے، جیسے روم کے بادشاہ کو قیصر، فارس کے بادشاہ کو کسریٰ، مصر کے حکمران کو فرعون اور حبشہ کے فرماں روا کو نجاشی کہا جاتا تھا۔ اہل تاریخ کا اتفاق ہے کہ تبابعہ میں سے بعض تبع کو بڑا عروج حاصل ہوا۔ حتیٰ کہ بعض مورخین نے یہاں تک کہہ دیا کہ وہ ملکوں کو فتح کرتے ہوئے سمرقند تک پہنچ گیا، اس طرح اور بھی کئی عظیم بادشاہ اس قوم میں گزرے اور اپنے وقت کی یہ ایک عظیم ترین قوم تھی جو قوت وطاقت، شوکت وحشمت اور فراغت وخوشحالی میں ممتاز تھی۔ لیکن جب اس قو م نے بھی پیغمبروں کی تکذیب کی تو اسے تہس نہس کرکے رکھ دیا گیا (تفصیل کے لیے دیکھئے سورۂ سبا کی متعلقہ آیات) حدیث میں ایک تبع کے بارے میں آتا ہے کہ وہ مسلمان ہوگیا تھا، اسے سب و شتم نہ کرو (مجمع الزوائد 87 / 86 ،صحیح الجامع للالبانی، 1319) تاہم ان کی اکثریت نافرمانوں کی ہی رہی ہے جس کی وجہ سے ہلاکت ان کا مقدر بنی۔]]

Are they better or the people of Tubbaʿ[[The tribe of Saba’.]] and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.
Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall:
Are they better, or the folk of Tubb'a and those before them? We destroyed them, for surely they were guilty.
Mufti Taqi Usmani:
Are they better or the people of Tubba‘ and those who were before them? We have destroyed them. They were guilty indeed.
