I like how Rip has created an heir in his image. We will keep getting our weekly Frahdee doses even after Rip is gone. Rip cares for us bottom 3 percenters!
As I reach the end of NLP (actually headed to the gym to do a deload/reset weight of the B Press today) I have been aware of this but for some reason never felt really certain about the degree of the solidity of my body as a whole unit. Any maybe it's a well known bro thing otherwise but the tip to raise your butt off the bench then lower it til it touches is exactly the missing link I was looking for. Can't get more solid than that. Thank you!
@@jamesianv I've only deloaded/reset once and gone down to 2 squats per week. I haven't done the 3x3 yet, but I don't know that I'll do that. We'll see how it goes. I'm older so NLP hasn't been the easiest on my tendons (many of which have a bad past anyway), and the older lifters can't get as much of that milking out of NLP as the younger guys. I think the sooner I get to a 4-day H/L split with weekly progression, the better; but I also can't help but at least try to milk NLP out for what its worth. It sure has been fun!
I used to bench without my feet on the ground, someone taught me if I lifted my legs up with bent knees and crossed my feet then it took the lower body completely out of the lift and forced the chest and arms to do all the work. I guess it worked if you only wanted to isolate the chest and triceps but I press way more feet on the ground and leg drive.
The video description says "Starting Strength Coach Brent Carter gives some helpful tips on how to use leg drive during the bench press and why it's important." He gave tips on how to do it but he didn't explain why it's important :(

60+, novice LP, sub-bodyweight BP, here. Based on some excellent tips I got from an SS coach in Virginia, I tried the leg drive and it seems to act like a valsalva in spirit -- it does something to stabilize & strengthen my core, so that when pushing up my aforementioned puny weight, I'm pushing more against my entire body than just my shoulders or upper body.... it gives me a little bit more oomph. Good coaching tips are gold.
For the love of fahves....does no one at starting strength realize that literally no one outside of his immediate family likes brent carter? He did what every small man does; surround himself with strong people, grow a beard, and develop a fascination with his own voice. Congratulations, you have a beard, but the reality is when the traveling carnival comes to town, Nick has to slip the carnie a fahve to get brent through the "you must be this tall to ride" line.
Considering you don’t even know how to spell Larsen, you must not know very much about training. Lmao. The bench press is the primary lift. Larsen presses can be used as a main movement or an accessory. They both work.

@@LTPottenger The more stable and strong your whole body is (even lying on a bench) the better it contributes to the lift. I know this from experience. I suppose it matters less on the b press than other stuff but to me, it still matters.
@@HAL-dm1eh There's a difference between stabilizing and simply cheating. Some guy the other day was talking about jaohn haack saying he is so much better at bench press than me. But in reality he is not really even the weight claimed because of the weigh in bs, at least 20 lbs heavier so he is my size or more. Plus he barely has his butt on the bench at all. You can easily get 100 lbs more if you are not on the bench at all but if you are just barely touching it your 'leg drive' can still be easily 50 pounds. Now wtf does 'leg drive' have to do with pushing with your upper body. So his real lift is something like benching 340-360 at 240-250 lbs body weight, which is not even that good but he is hailed as the GREATEST OF ALL TIME. @@LTPottenger Well, I'm doing it for stability. I can't arch my back all that much because of flexibility, and I wouldn't do it but to a certain extent because of what you mentioned.
