Since some builders use polyfill to make their keyboard build more thock. Since I don't want to waste more money on that, I ended up using some cotton as an alternative. Keyboard is Akko Mod 007 V2, polycarbonate plate, no case foam and PCB foam, installed included PCB foam, cotton filled bottom housing, Akko Jelly Black hand lubed w/205 g0 , akko red and blue samurai keycaps. It's more towards marble thock ish sound. Love it.
The reason why we use polyfill as a sound dampener and not any other materials is because polyfill is proven to be safe for electronics as it is an anti-static cottonish material. You might wanna check out what kind of cotton you used for your board cuz if you used make up cotton or face cotton remove it ASAP! It might intervene with your PCB resulting to a shorted out PCB or a bricked one. Be careful on what you put underneath your board specially if it has down firing LED’s because one wrong move and your PCB goes bye bye. Just sharing this knowledge in case some doesn’t know about it. Hopefully you look onto this too! Have a good dayy!! 💛
the lighter the foam the deeper the sound the denser the foam the higher(or clackier)
Not to mention that cotton can literally catch on fire especially if your keyboard has a battery in it.
@@skrimontgv2217 is it safe to use cotton if you do the tape mod in the pcb?
Absolutely love the sound!
i like the keycaps you used in the switches test
That keyboard sounds really awesome man that's exactly how I want my keyboard to sound.
i liked your video and subscribed , best keyboard modding video i've seen so far, keep going
thx so much lewis you are the best keyboard and content creator i have ever seen o love watchung your content and it is super helpfull
i thought the silicone dampener was the only thing separating the plate from the pcb. also, where did you get the replacement gaskets from?
It’s better to use a thick wood table as well for thock instead of a deskmat. This is because the sound resonates through the wood causing a thocky sound.
The combination of wood table and clothe is really helpful 😅
very good and informative video, hope you the best in life bro!
Saying PBT is a more budget material than ABS isn't exactly correct. PBT is more expensive on a base material cost, and more difficult to work with and manufacture. ABS is an easier and cheaper material to work with. This means with ABS, it is easier (and cheaper) to get crisp legends and consistent colors.
My guess at to why PBT is used more in "budget" keysets is that, historically, PBT has been viewed as the better, more premium material, so it is meant to be a draw towards buying their sets over popular brands that use ABS caps. PBT is also largely still seen as the more premium material in the larger, gamer-style mechanical keyboard world (ie Logitech, Steelseries, Corsair, etc), so it is a draw for that market. The gamer mech demographic is also much less willing to spend custom mech prices, so higher end "gamer mech" PBT keycap sets often end up being less expensive compared to entry or mid range custom mech keysets, where ABS is used to more easily and cheaply achieve things like crisp legends that the custom mech demographic prioritizes.
ABS being viewed as more "premium" is a pretty recent phenomenon, largely due to the rise of GMK. If you look at old keyboard content (maybe 5 years or older, and especially before Cherry's patent expired), PBT is usually described as the more premium material.
And, as always in this hobby, it ultimately just comes down to preference.
I'm not updated into recent mech trends and I'm shocked when he said ABS is more premium than PBT, ABS double shots are cheaper than even laser engraved PBT back then
Let's gooi, i preordered my kb67 lite r4 so I'm very happy you are making a build with it! Imma use box ink v2s and GMK Laser or Polycaps hippo
You should get gateron cj’s or oil kings instead gateron cj’s are much smoother then tangerines stock and oil kings are also good for thock and are smoother then the inks
@@TrippieMint bold if you to assume i have money to buy those too, haven't even ordered my keycaps yet
Finished my first keyboard yester and oh boy does this baby thock!!
Does adding plate foam also adds to the thock or not? And if so, could i use both case and plate foam for the thock? Also is the case foam EVA?
I build my KBD 67 Lite R3 with the same method you used! And Its the thockiest
Try the WS Onion switches, they are extremely low pitched. Should be a great option for a super thocky linear instead of the U4T
Love your keycaps. I am intrigued by the increase of thocc through decrease of dampener. It is a matter of density I wonder? Thanks for this video!
Learned a lot, W video
nice keycaps in the switch comparisons😏😏
What were the second switches you showed at the beginning of the switch section?? I like how they're shaped and a lil quieter
lol sounds EXACTLY like my BBK552 with lubed cs silvers , akko asa shine through keycaps (black) with Pouran foam in the bottom, lubed plate mount stabs, and a little extra pourun under the space bar. I wish I could add a clip to prove it. even the space bar sounds the same.
Hey @Lewis Toh did you lube the switches yourself by any chance or did you stick with the factory lube?
I'm so sketched with tape mod on my epomaker th80, its my first mechanical keyboard, and alot of people saying not to use certain painters tape with a keyboard that has a battery, apparently some are conductive.
This is legit my exact keyboard lmfao (just the r3 and not the r4 but as you said they're the same thing just different colors)
1:53 nice keycaps LOL
If i took a shot every time Lewis said the word thocc i would have alcohol poisoning
0:05 he said ""so today ill be sh-trying and showing you guys how to build a thocky keyboard"" it was so funny
I finished my first keeb yesterday ... this baby thocks.
hi i love your vids :D
i want to build a thock keyboard with a budget of 120usd or under(200nzd), i wonder what is the best keyboard kit, switches and keycap for this to make it sound thock, i planned to buy a pre build one(akko 3068b plus, jelly black switches or Akko ACR61 also black switches or Akko PC75B jelly black too) but i think it doesnt sound very good and thocky, so i dont know should i get pre build(the thockiest out of 3 but idk which so please guide me :P), or build my own
If someone is creating a custom mechanical keyboard cause they are after that certain type of sound when the key is pressed. Should end up thinking about the material of the desk surface as well cause it does have a effect on it.
Good but do we lube the switches and is there another more budget friendly option in the switch side
Fun vid.
One note, though...I don't know if foam makes the keyboard "denser" as opposed to damping the transfer of sound through the case and air.
@@suchti9049 except somehow in practice on some board, the reverse is true. We need a dedicated keyboard science lab to really find the answer.
does anyone know where i can get a polycarbonate plate for a tm680 cos it only comes with a steel plate
Love this keyboard, I made it a few weeks ago, but I just figured out that I cant use the Fn key, is there a way to somehow change a bind or something?
I just love how you say keyboard! 😊
Is it possible to make a thocky keyboard using outemu blue clicky switches? I have one Redragon Mitra full sized keyboard with those switches and was thinking if I can improve it's sound.
i know the majority used PE foam between the plate and switches but are there any differences using different type of foam for the case? i can't decide which foam to use for filling those empty space in my case.
another good switch is the Akko v3 Jelly Black
Hey man, great video. I had a doubt @5:51. You said you replaced the PCB foam (which i assume means the foam between the PCB and the plate) but your video shows you replacing the case foam (lying between your pcb and case). Which one did you replace? Also, what kind of foam did you replace it with? Thanks
there is a foam called pcb foam, it goes at the back of the pcb, i removed that and used a normal poron case foam
@@LewisToh did you remove the original case foam, the white one? or did you leave it there and add the poron foam on top of it
Is it possible to build a thocky full-size keyboard using aliexpress only? I don't have access to anything besides this shop. I found out that gateron black ink v2 might be a good choice. Also foam and tape mods are must have. What do you think?
This is a really good build! (also, what about the bakeneko60, it is $130 with an aluminum case and an oring mount.
bakeneko is amazing for its price, hell its amazing even disregarding its price. Obviously, since it uses gummy o ring it will be a bit higher pitched
i love you bro i wish i have a keyb like that
to clear up about keycaps:
ultra budget: abs
budget: pbt
midrange-high: double shot pbt
extreme: double shot abs
hello, is gateron g yellow pro good for thocky keyboard?
If the masking or painters tape uses acrylic (a fairly common material used in those tapes) then yes, you should be worried about shorting the pcb...
Did you use the 62g or 68g U4Ts here?
It’s so thoccy
also, how about boba lt
i heard that it is the same as the u4t but linear
4:21 me with my razer abs keycaps looking down on plebs using pbt
wow you really know your stuff
throw some akko matcha greens in that i swear that keyboard will be the most thocky thing you've ever heard and smooth and quiet.
Hello you earned a sub and like im about to buy the upcoming krush 65 polycarbonate version they have 2 kinds of mount o ring and top mount? Can you help me to choose what stabs plate switches and keycaps to choose pls
how can i mod my stock razer blackwidow v1? is tape method alone worth it?
wow I loved this sound wish a keyboard how that
Finding the u4t is kinda in the nutshell in 2023. The price went crazy tbh. But when you are deep enough in the keyboard rabbit hole, the most important thing is how it feels to type not the sound.
what are the best budget thocky tactile switches ?
With the KBD67 LITE R4 MECHANICAL KEYBOARD DIY KIT what switches size fit 62g or 68g?
Which app/site do you use for the typing test?
2:00 where can i get those keycaps? I love them, it fits my colour scheme of white and black
4:29 Where do you get those Keycaps? And also can the GMK Keycaps can work too?
Sounds nice
U shld review ttc hey and base it on Hipyo tech cos of howdy hey 😂😂😂
do you feel heavy for this switch ? the operating force is 62 g , i never tried this switch
Just a quick correction, you mentioned that doubleshot PBT is the more cheaper option, but ABS is actually on the lower end for quality compared to PBT. Just letting you all know if you were confused :)
High-end ABS sets like ones from GMK are generally the most expensive because they produce the highest quality legends with their double shot process. ABS plastic also allows for basically any colour combination imaginable. They are vastly different from the cheapo dogshit ABS shinethrough keycaps that gaming keyboards usually come with and are usually what people refer to when people say that ABS is inferior to PBT.
PBT naturally has more resistance to shine than ABS, but since most PBT sets are dye sub, quality of legends can get close but will not match the quality of GMK Doubleshots. Dye sub also limits colour combinations to strictly darker shade legends on lighter shade keycaps. Reverse dye sub is an option, but is not common and is hard to get right.
One material isn't simply better than the other, it just depends on what you value more in your keycaps. High-end ABS if you're looking for more colour options and crisper legends, PBT if you hate shine and can live with not having the highest possible quality legends.
Wpm? I think it should be changed to thocc per second (tps)
can you do this video but on creamy keyboards?
2:10 caught in 4K
Could you please link that livestream you mention?
very very nice thocky ki boh
1:53 nice keycaps bro
Hi Lewis, I am still new to the keyboard community and so can you please explain to me what is the difference between creamy and thocky, thans
Is it worth lubing the Boba switches?
where is the keyboard pad? I can't find one with such a perfect side for my keyboard
So this is my frst time building a keyboard. I just need to order the 3 things, and put it all together including the mods?
are those the hentAI key caps on the thock tests
cant wait for this! Also lewis, it'd be really cool if we could see you try to mod a royal kludge board! They're pretty good! (try the rk71 brown switch)
How thick is the foam you ended up using?
What type of foam did you use?
You gotta get your hands on those ceramic keycaps for even more thock
Are the Bobs ut4t switches you used and put the link Herr pre lubed? I just bought the keychron q2 pro with keychron pro banana switches and want to change and the switches and mod the Keyboard. I Need More thockiness. Pls help
Love pbtfans cant wait to see some more designs in the future. Really dope caps for the money. I havent tired it but not a fan of the kbd67, prob cuz of the bad mounting style. Looks like you prob made it better removing the silicon. Sounds alot better now.
