Zimbabwe in deadly conflict with wildlife as animals attack

- Officials in Zimbabwe’s national parks received more than 1,000 distress calls last year from people whose villages were being trampled by elephants.
And so far this year, dozens of people have been killed in animal attacks.
Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Hwange National Park, where communities have started relying on their own methods to keep animals away.

Keeps bees, Elephants will not come near your homes
I am happy to here that the population of elephants has increased but I am sad for the farmers 😢😞. There must be a solution to this without having to kill.
no, killing lots of elephants is necessary. not just in zimbabwe, but botswana, too. besides harming humans, elephants in some regions cause a lot of damage to nature by tearing down trees and such. and if you're worried about endangered species: elephants have a thing for killing rhinos, and rhinos are much more endangered than elephants nowadays. plus rhino bebbehs are easily as cute as elephant bebbehs.
the common varieties of african elephant mostly are safe now, and the species as a whole totally is. one that's in real trouble though is the african forest elephant. I think they live around where the apes are, central africa or equatorial west africa or so.
@suresh krishendeholl no, it is not easy to move elephant. maybe large electrical fences or people practicing family planning

@@Ass_of_Amalek there is a sustainable elephant population and in certain areas of botswana the elephant population is overpopulated thus unsustainable leading to harm to local ecosystems such as demage to trees and other wildlife species. if only there was way to move elephants to protected areas in other parts of africa where the elephant population was eroded such as namibia or uganda in civil war. in west africa for example elephants hunted to near extinction. trophy hunting is better solution than culling elephants. also many rich spoiled westerners only think with emotions thus exasperating problem.
How sad! Bezos has that much money in his couch cushions but for lack of pocket change Zimbabwe can't move the troublesome elephants.
Was just thinking the same thing.
Zimbabwe Nation parks is sitting on usd300 Million worth of ivory and rhino horns, but is unable to sell this stock to fund it's conservation efforts due to a ban on ivory trade, but you have some conversation fanatics in Europe or America campaigning against culling the population of elephants
Animal rights group should look into this, I’m sure they would gladly move them if the consequence is culling. The situation is not sustainable. The rights groups/charities would have access to funds to do so too… :(
maybe China or India has a cheaper solution to this.
zimbabwe's human inhabitants need that kind of money for other things. it is insane to spend that on moving zimbabwean elephants. sorry, but they need to just be shot. the only semi-viable alternative could be (chemical) sterilization, but generally sterilization campaigns of free-roaming a imals (like feral cats for example) don't manage to be effective enough to reduce populations, only slow growth. elephants in some areas in zimbabwe or botswana are already overpopulated, freezing their population numbers would not be enough.
Might be advisable to move some of these elephants to countries that recently came out civil wars like South Sudan. They have lots of space and no animals to talk off.
it cost 400k dollars to move just 100 elephants a poor country like zimbabwe would run bankrupt trying to move just 1000
Donate the money to them to do this, then, why don't you???
@@eduwino151 LOL you must be delusional. The politicians have more than what ever you're describing forget about the country
@@Abdi-uy1kh hey do you think Zimbabwe has 100million dollars to throw away moving 50000 elphants , do some basic math before yapping , its too expensive for poor countries
@@eduwino151 Its not its called corruption.
Too many people and we are the ones encroaching on the wildlife it’s so sad 😢….
that's not the situation here get your facts right
Just about the dumbest comment I have heard in some time. There is so much to assume from your comment. I will spare you the insult and dignity.
@@DaudAriehBenIsrael absolutely this is the greatest insult I have ever come across..if I want to respond to her message the insult would have no ending
Nope, these elephants are migrating there. Humans were there first.
People are looking but not seeing ,and hearing but not listening. People only need to see &listen to what’s going around the world as a whole from the oceans to the sky’s to the land … Once all the animals on our planet are gone we will be next.
The comment was in response to people building more farm land ,,,,,
More people ,too many , and the story is the same one all over the world.
Stop thinking like cruel European about killing the animals instead movement them to other parts of Africa such as Kenya Tanzania
Pretty sure they said they are lacking the necessary funds for moving the elephants, only way would be for outside help to move them
@@thedoctor4710 come on don't be difficult these animals are national icons for African used the army. All Africa should come together for this thats why we have a African union
💩
they can also move some to west Africa, Like Ghana, Guinea, Gambia and Senegal
@@84mryuppie exactly your right.
Hahaha “The elephants are overpopulated.” No, humans in the country are over populated. Just in 50 years the population of Zimbabwe move from 5 million to 15 million.
Leave animals live in peace
Prayers for those people.
Protect elephants its a huge investment for the nation. People can move to the cities to avoid conflict
good journalism
Just few hours ago we are from burying a game guard who was killed by elephant 🐘 on Saturday. In Victoria Falls town Zimbabwe the same Saturday I was in hwange national Park two much elephant there.
Again ,there are too many people… Not too many elephants…People are taking up all of the precious landscape that is needed for these beautiful animals . God gifts- to humans, but
there are too many People.
@@michellegutierrez2119 you very much collect
Most of the animals are still sufferng The war trauma from past civil conflicts
its sad that people are suffering Zimbabwe elephants have increased by 20% in the past 4 yrs
it would be best if there is controlled culling of elephants which will benefit thousands of villagers in these areas
The world population of all animals has dwindled in the last 100 while the human population has quadrupled and we claim that the animals are the problem. Really?
@@grahamsaundersstewart3982 Have empathy for the people who live in close proximity to this national park where conservation and anti-poaching efforts have been so successful that there a way too many elephants in the park.
@@ncubesays So there are too many elephants, but not too many people? Seriously?
@@orangeyewglad Yep. That's right. Plenty of research and evidence to corroborate this in both Zimbabwe and Botswana elephant herds. The people who reside on park boundaries should be applauded for their efforts in combating poaching. They really are the unsung heroes. I live on the outskirts of a national park in south west Zimbabwe and very au fait with regards to this.
This isn’t good if you get people angry they will destroy even the innocent animals for vengeance…. What do you do?
I think putting it in such defined moral places ignores the suffering the people are going through at this moment. This isn't the option based on anger but survival for these people
@@shinyduke1791 doubt survival is on mind of guy that just had brother smooshed like pancake by elephant bud
This story needs way more detail!
Potential ivory paradise....
It's interesting how it feels to get out and see those animals and to be used to that . Why ppl who can would not move there and make those ppl more rich? live is to short for riches i guess.
Big Animals Are Elephants They Can Do A Lot Of Damage To Humans And Other Animals!🐘🏞🇿🇼
TOO MANY PEOPLE N CROOKED GOVERNMENT 💔
Sell some to near countries Zambia for instance, south Africa and any another African countries
How horrible. People are over populating, and wont stop, and u think that the animals should die?
How bout u quit having babies, because the animals shouldnt have to die and u shouldnt be taking up their space😐. Js
Go fk yourself why do my people have to die over elephants
there has to be a balance ,it cant be one sided
Please don't kill elephants send them to other countries send them to Pakistan 🇵🇰
Why not pack your stuff up and move? 😐 Idk
Lmao ignorance truly is bliss
get the chinese over
We them to steal anymore
I thought Zimbabweans were out of food. Why not use those animals for food? One elephant can feed 20 families for 2 months😊😊
if they're killing large numbers of elephants to get rid of them, I hope they counteract the traditional ivory hunting pressure by sparing those elephants with above average tusk size. besides being cool, that would probably make some sense for tourism (I think bigger tusked elephants are more popular). on the other hand though, perhaps an argument could be made that particularly fully tuskless elephants (I know those exist nowadays, not dure if in zimbabwe) pose less of a risk to the natural environment because elephants commonly use their tusks to tear down trees, and sometimes also to attack and kill other animals such as rhinos. tuskless elephants are probably a bit less destructive.
