Thanks, I really appreciate hearing that!
spent so much time trying every possible tutorial, and this happened to be the only one that made sense, and worked -> because it didnt leave any space for 'mysteries' )) Thanks a bunch man!
I'm really happy to hear that! Thx for watching :)
Among the thousands of tutorials I've watched this one is the best one. thanks mate
Thanks! I appreciate that. Thanks for watching:)
Fabulous - really clear and to the point.
Great succinct tutorial. SUBSCRIBED! Cheers, mate.
Thanks very much!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! 💯
thanks for watching :)
YOU RULE, thank you so much for the clear instructions, step-by-step guide with visuals and just overall help with this. Thank you so much! You're kinda helping me out here more than my teacher is ope,,
I'm glad this video was able to help! What are some other video ideas that would help!
Excellent video, clear and concise explanation.
Glad it helped! Thx for watching:)
Greetz from Poland!!! You helped me a lot with this video - just started building lab for hacking and stucked in one thing with pfsense. Thank you.
I'm glad it was helpful! Are there other videos that would be helpful? Any homelab vid ideas that you would enjoy seeing? Thanks for watching!!
u is THE MAN bro u saved me from being dropped from uni and with this video i graduated with the honnors so big up for u
Hey! I'm glad it helped! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks, just what I needed so I can learn pfSense before taking down my Untangle/NG/Arista.
I'm glad it helped ! thanks for watching :)
Dude--you rock.
Thanks!! Thanks for watching:)
Thanks! This was very easy to follow and I got it to work
That's great!! I am glad it worked for you. What other kinds of tutorial videos would you want to see?
@@RedBlueLabs if you haven’t done them then videos about cybersecurity projects to do would be nice! I’m trying to beef up my resume by including some projects in there. Or maybe some other virtual machine related videos since I’m planning on practicing, getting familiar with software, and working on my skills using VM.
@@dolly2985 I have talked with a number of IT managers and a most will say they want to hear about people's home labs. The nice thing about vms, is that you can actually make whatever home lab you want. Is it practicing networking then PFsense is a great tool for that. Thanks for the video idea!!
Awesome :) thanks a lot
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
If we set the Adapter 1 to Bridged Adapter, no WAN IP is assigned to the pfSense VM. The VM cannot ping the host machine either. When trying to ping the host, it responds with ‘No route to host’. Why is it happening so?
Good video! 👍
Thx for watching:)
horayy! thank you so much
Thanks for watching :)
Question. Do i need the DHCP for pfsense on if im trying to connect this to an active directory vm that already has DHCP set up?
Greay question! ua-cam.com/video/qLjkc3DA5fw/v-deo.html
Here is another video that talks about pointing pfsense to a different DNS server, while different then what you are asking the premise is very similar. Inside the settings of pfsense gui we need to point machines from the LAN to the correct DHCP server. Thanks for watching :)
Hi Andrew - thank you very much for this really clear and helpful tutorial. Quick question if I may. I'd like to setup a 2nd interface on the pfSense so I can do some firewall rule testing in a virtual environment e.g. between a trusted and a guest network. Is there any chance you could explain how that's done? Thanks in advance. Alex (UK).
hey great question. I actually have a few FW rules videos on on my channel that could help with that. PFSense is perfect for practicing FW rules because it is a safe environment. A video you may want to consider, only because it deals with FW rules specifically is the video where you connect to a domain computer from a different network. We have to use FW rules in order to make this happen Thanks for watching :)
Hello! Thanks for this awesome tutorial it worked for me. Just want to ask will this allow me to access the webConfigurator of PfSense? I tried accessing the IP to my browsers but it won't let me access it only says "the site can't be reached". Not sure what I'm doing I'm still a student by the way. learning things out.
Thx for watching, when you go through the setup stages in the pfsense it should ask if you want to set up webconfigurator. Typically this is set up on the LAN side.
Once LAN is all up connect a machine to that network and connect to pfsense gui through the gateway address. In here there is a wizard that you will need to step through.
Let me know if it gives you any more issues!
Thanks for the video, I am gonna try that right now. P.S. Each time you click your mouse, I hear chunks of its soul getting away! Poor thing! 😂
Haha, I guess I am a hard "clicker" it also doesnt help that i put a mic on that side of the desk. Thx for watching the video :)
Hello and thank you for the video that was useful to me, I had only one question: once pfsense is installed and set to internal network it will protect the other virtual machines automatically connected without having to do other procedures? In my case I connected in my lan pfsense and metasploitable
Yes, if you have two LANs and they are set to internal then if you put a machine in each LAN they will be totally isolated from each other and only reachable when firewall rules permit it. Thanks for watching:)
How would you go about sharing the lan network with VMs and physical hardware? My system has two physical Ethernet ports
This is a very good question. Without knowing more, it would depend how you are going to run PFSense. for me I am working on putting pfsense on a physical machine, where the only OS for the desktop is PFSense, this means though that I would have to use two physical adapters to actually use them as networks. I need to do a bit of digging to see if what you are wanting is possible. PFSense is a great option for a free router, that is why I am going to be making a dedicated desktop that is only PFSense. Sorry I couldn't be more help, thanks for watching the video :)
Hi, so does running pfsense in VirtualBox means it's only available within the VM ? Can the host machine reach pfsense web config page? In asking cos I need to create a captive portal on my home wifi.
Thanks for your comment. It really depends how you want to accomplish it. A way that I have heard a lot of people do is actually installing pfsense as the primary OS on a computer. Have a couple NICs and have traffic route through this. The benefit of this is that you will have the horse power of a desktop, as opposed to a vm which is reliant on whatever the host machine has. I'm thinking of doing this myself, just haven' found the time to get to it.
Hi, thank you for video. I have a problem. I downloaded the pfsense iso file. The file appears on the computer, but when I want to add it to the virtual machine, it does not appear among the options? What could be the reason for this?
It could be that it is still zipped. Go to your downloads and confirm that it has the extension .iso. let me know if you need some more info I would be happy to help :)
For some reason I do not get the BIOS option when setting up my pfSense, but thanks to you I now have a pfSense running on my virtual machine.
I'm glad you got it working! I've made pfsense with bridged as the external IP and it has worked, but I have had more success with NAT.
To get to the BIOS double check the keyboard interrupts that are available in the drop down options in virtual. Hopefully this helps let me know if I can help out further :)
Thanks for watching!
hey man great video! How do i connect a standalone desktop without virtualbox to the same internal LAN as pfsense VM ?
Awesome question. It depends how things are configured. The desktop needs to connect to the machine hosting pfsense vm, the host machine would need at least 2 network interfaces so that traffic can be routed through it. I would think a network switch connecting to a interface on host machine and then have your standalone desktop will connect to that switch. If you have an old computer you could also turn the entire machine into a router which is pretty cool too. I hope this helps :) thanks for watching!
@@RedBlueLabs I will look into this great advice thank you!
For the new LAN IPv4 address, do we determine it by ourself?
Yes you do. During the setup phase of the new interface you get to set the gateway, this is where you would choose the IP :)
When I connect a computer to act as the WAN I cannot reach the computer on the inside of the VM. Is there something I am not configuring right?
thanks for your question. Just to clarify are you using the WAN interface with NAT? Or are you pointing the WAN interface to another machine which will then be doing the routing for you? Depending on which machine is trying to reach an inside network you may want to think about port forwarding as a solution
nice and easy
I'm glad it helped :)
i have followed everything step by step but when i try and add the pfsense file into the ide controller my sys says verr not supported F
the only thing i can think of is my server has an intell cpu not amd but i dont know if that is causing the issue or not HELP PLEASE
I will do my best. Without knowing more I will ask a few questions that may get you going. These are some issues I have seen people doing in the past
Have you unzipped the pfsense download before attaching to the VM?
Are you running on a VM or installing on the server itself?
Try downloading the pfsense iso again to make sure your copy is not corrupt somehow.
Perhaps send the exact error message it is getting and I may be able to help further.
We will get it!
Andrew
Great video, but for some reason my wan doesn't automatically come up, neither does it show after I manually assign it. What should I do?
Hey! Thanks for watching the video, most often when this happens it is because I forgot to set the first interface as NAT. Make sure that you set NAT as the first (WAN) address and then LAN after that. Hope that helps, let me know if it doesn't :)
Hi, if I install pfsense on a Virtualbox VM, will the VM running pfsense also protect the host?
Thanks for your comment, it depends what you mean by protect. I run pfsense and then have machines running inside the LANs it's great for home lab scenarios
So everything seems fine, and my Kali machine is connected to the pfsense, but my Kali machine itself isn't connected to the internet. Why? I cant' browse, I can't get-apt update, none of that
this could be something else, I have had situations where Kali doesn't update, and the fix was on how I installed it.
before you go to far troubleshooting the network. Do you have a different vm that you could put on that network? if you do, put it on that LAN fire it up and see if you get internet. if you do, that is good it means you are having a Kali only problem.
if it is a Kali problem, the fix I have done is create a brand new kali but during the creation process ensure that I have internet, you want to make sure that you are connected to the rolling-releases correctly.
These are a couple things to try. let me know if it doesn't and we can keep troubleshooting :)
Do I need two physical NIC cards for using a virtual machine?
Hi, no you don't. It all depends on what you are wanting to do with the virtual machine. You could have VM with no NIC if you wanted. For pfsense, it's beneficial to have access to the internet for updating and using the FW features
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Im glad it helped! Thanks for watching :)
Hey man I’ve got an issue.. After finishing the installation and click reboot it restarts the installation every time. Feel like ripping my hair out not sure what is going on
Sorry to hear that. In the settings double check the boot order. Change the boot order so that the hard drive is first. If the "disc" is first every time you boot the vm will check your loaded ISO file.
Hope this helps! Thanks for watching:)
@@RedBlueLabs hey man I managed to get it sorted thank you! I just needed to remove the virtual disk when i rebooted.
can you use this as a physical network?
You could actually. I have run this exact same setup on a PC and routed traffic through it
@@RedBlueLabs do you have a tutorial for it, I've been trying to use firewall and pfblockerNG for my home network and it doesn't seem to work
Update to the .iso download file, you will need to extract after download, the file is compressed, I used 7-zip free version.
you are exactly right! thanks for pointing that out
I reboot and it just wants to start installing again.
Hey, thanks for watching! the thing to check is in the machine settings. Make sure that the Hard drive is set as the first bootable media and not the optical drive. If you leave the optical drive as the first one every time you boot it will check the iso file first which then restarts the installation process. Let me know if this helps!!
i am doing this configuration but when I press Reboot, it deletes all the preview configuration. how can I fix that?
Great video.
Hi, Thanks for the comment. Next time you reboot, make sure you have taken "out" the ISO image. Also, I recommend taking regular snapshots so that you can revert to it when you accidentally configure something wrong (it happens to the best of us ;) )
I hope this helps!! Thanks for watching :)
@@RedBlueLabs Many Thanks. I was able to fix it
@@RedBlueLabs I have another question, my lan is not able to access the internet, is there any way I can do to fix?
I reckon more than a couple of people approaching middle age were wondering what the heck a floppy is.
Hahah no kidding
it doesnt work for win10 virtual machine:(
I'm sorry you are experiencing that. I have a win 10 machine that is running in virtual box.
What version of virtual box are you using?
db<
What should i do here pls help
I would be happy to provide more info. What specifically are you needing help with? :)
I did all of this, it worked but now how t.f do I use this as a router? I have a wifi card, a dual ethernet card, and onboard ethernet. I want to use this as a router. I plugged my PC into the computer running this VM & it says identifying no internet. I rebooted, added the 3rd network adapter even though you only did 2. I have no clue what I'm doing. You should have showed how to get ACTUAL Machines to connect to pfsense and not some virtual machine I'm not making to test if it works. The virtual machine was to run the virtual router. Not another VM. Why make a half baked video like this?
Strong opinions. The purpose of the video is to show pfsense as a virtual machine and other virtual machines connecting to it, this was the purpose of the video. You sound frustrated, I'm sorry you are experiencing this. Working with vms and hardware is tricky, pfsense has some great documentation that will assist you docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/

Eaglesd Ewwwwwww lo
I know I know, I'm fan. Thanks for watching despite the Eagles shirt :)
@@RedBlueLabs Dont worry I am a Giants fan lol
Can you make a text based tut for this for the networking side of this? as 2 adapterscan be complicated for example bridged vs nat that setting is the most tricky for me to always get right 1st time lol i mean in the vbox network tab itself not pfsense!
I have a blog -->apt-secure.ca
I haven't posted for a bit because I have been focusing on UA-cam. I would be happy to do a text based version as well. It will just take a bit of time. Thanks for watching and also thanks for being a subscriber!!
Quick question, I didn't put any music in this video. Do you like tech training videos with music? I'm on the fence. Thanks :)
Hello, for some reason it is not working for me, would you mind if i contacted you via e-mail so that you can help me, i have been struggling with this for days
A solution that could work for both of us would be if you provide more details about the challenge you are facing in our comments section and I will do my best to answer it for you :)
I am having a trouble at the time of booting it is showing cpu doesn't support long mode what should i do abou that
Sorry for late response l, have you had any luck?
