P&O Iona Norway Cruise - Ålesund Cruise Port - Lovely Local Walk Around Hessa Island for FREE

We stopped at the lovely port town of Ålesund as part of our cruise to Norway on the P&O Iona ship in April 2024. If you've seen our other videos, you know one of the things we enjoy is taking a nice long walk near the cruise port, and this trip was no exception. Looking at the map, we noticed a promising walk around the neighboring island of Hessa, which is connected to Ålesund by a road bridge.
The walk took us past the Atlantic Sea-Park Aquarium. While you could simply walk there and back, we continued on and discovered a fascinating old defensive structure, the Hessen Batteri. We explored inside before proceeding around the island, passing some charming houses with spectacular sea views.
As we walked back into the town of Ålesund, we climbed to a great little viewpoint called Storhaugen. Just outside town, it offers stunning views of both the island we'd walked and the town itself. From there, we spotted an attractive harbor and lighthouse, which turned out to be the Molja Lighthouse. Amazingly, it's one of the "rooms" offered by a local hotel - it would certainly be an interesting place to stay!
After exploring the town, we indulged in a delicious coffee and hot chocolate at a local café. We really appreciate the sociable and relaxing atmosphere of Norwegian coffee shops. Then it was back aboard Iona for some food and rest.
All in all, it was another lovely day and a great port stop with an excellent walk, all for free.
