      @@iRywo hey, loved the video, great stuff, you deserve a lot more followers than you currently have. Re the audio: there's a lot of room reflections/reverb in your voice recording. You sound a bit far away from the mic, which is probably due to a lack of room treatment. Maybe invest in some acoustic panels or a nice dynamic microphone. Recording in a room with a rug and more furniture can also help. If you move the mic, even if it is a lapel mic, closer to your mouth, you'll get an effect called proximity effect, which increases the low end resonance (bass frequencies) of your voice. This is often described as the "radio announcer" or "NPR" sound; that deep, rich, warm voice sound that is very pleasant to listen to. When you looked directly at the mic and said "spoiler alert", the quality of your voice was much higher. Also, when you said "procedural world" around 8:08, there was some clipping, aka the decibels went too high. This can be corrected by lowering the pre-amp level on your audio interface and moving the mic closer to your mouth. Just to be clear, it didn't really bother me, just thought I'd make suggestions since you asked! :)

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo  3 місяці тому

      @@mitchellgenesse2866 Hot dayum that's a lot. I'm afraid a few of those issues I can't easily resolve, the lavalier microphones I use while they are fine aren't of extreme quality, and I use my phone to record the video's, so I can only adjust things once I'm editing in premier.. Luckily I might be able to tweak a thing or two in premier using their audio editing software, such as reducing reverb and smoothing out the clipping and such. I already filmed for the next video, so some of these issues might persist, but I'l see what I can do for the one after! Thanks for all the advice, audio really is the one aspect where my experience lacks the most. It's surprising to me, because my second video had a lot less issues even though I was using the same microphone.. Perhaps I am able to tweak something to make it work better, we'll see! Again, thanks for the advice man! and I am super happy that you enjoyed the video c:

    Great video. The only problem with open world games are lack of development. Studio need to put more effort/workhours in the same game if they decide to make it open world and not linear. And almost no one can pull it right. Every single open world game right now is unbalanced. Even the greatest ones.

    I think it would be fair to add Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom to the repetetive list.
    I mean, you got 120 Shrines in Breath of the Wild that look the exact same as the 4 main dungeons.
    In TOTK they don't look like the 4 main dungeons, but you got 140 of them instead.
    You also got the Depths in TOTK which are ... quite barren tbh, not much going for it.
    I think the problem with Open World games nowdays is, they make the world too big to fill.
    Too big so they have to put in repetetive experiences to fill it up. I'd rather have a much smaller map, with less experiences but in exchange, those experiences being more unique and exciting!
    Heck, even FF7 Rebirths Sidecontent had the issue of making really repetetive sidecontent, and I really liked the Story content that game provided.

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo  3 місяці тому +1

      Oh I completely agree! If I'm honest I have only played 2 hours of Tears of the Kingdom so far, I just didn't feel very drawn into it, at least while i was playing it? I think I did like the variation though with the shrines personally, yes they were very similar in looks and only slightly varying in gameplay, but it felt a little bit like doing a minigame to break up the mundane travel experience and you got a little reward from it that made your life easier too! Still better than the spacedust that Starfield brought..
      Open world games should focus on the open world bit, and not so much on the size bit. If I get drawn into each experience and thing I come across, and I bump into things frequently, I'll be way more immersed than just having an empty walk.. Although I do hear with Red dead redemption 2, people really enjoy the quiet travel as it's a calming experience where you just look at the landscapes.

    the only place an open world works is an MMO. Tibia is a really good example of this with a persistent open world(with some places being islands seperated by boat travel). A lot of the PVP gameplay revolves around the game being an open world. This gameplay is a good example ua-cam.com/video/tSXqa4Vpp0c/v-deo.html The fight transitions from an open desert, to a narrow passage to a multi level stairway. Both teams can utilise knowledge of the map to gain an advantage and flank each other.
    This is an example of a battle within a city where the leader is calling out cardinal directions in order to navigate around the enemy

      I think multiplayer as a whole can have an amazing impact on open worlds, not just because it's interesting to be able to explore with friends, but also because it adds in some extra spice sometimes with the interaction of gameplay systems and the world. Tibia seems super interesting! And I love how it integrates the world into it's combat, it gives the pvp a bit of a total war feel, just with a ton of people instead of cpu's! I think this is also a really good example. The map is seperated into squares the only way for two monsters/characters to be on the same square is for them to jump up or down from another level vertically onto it. This presents very interesting mechanics such as using the map tactically in ways such as: restricting how many enemies can reach you; trapping and pincering enemies to bunch them toghether and use area of affect attack; fighting in close quarters and counting to coordinate pushing the enemy into an empty spot closer to your teammeates as your team simultaneously moves back 1 square to free up a space. The pusher then takes the original spot of the person to cut them as as adjecent mages can support each other by feeding allies mana potions. In the case of a knight they throw up a magic wall preventing healing from a distance.
      Players can throw items under themselves to prevent pushes, and if you as a player initiate a push it has a second delay and any other action will cancel it. Players can also use items which are unwalkable or items which prevent a player being pushed onto them. However these items can still be moved or destroyed by monsters so players can use a special summon spell and manipulate the AI to destroy such an item or clear a field then kill the monster and perform the push.
      On another note because of the semi persistent nature of the game( there are new servers etc) players have 5-20 years of history with each other making a lot of emergant political gameplay possible with the existing guilds and relationships
      Overall there is an extreme complexity of gameplay: both mechanically and socially that arises from a persistent open world and its a shame a lot of games aren't able to explore it

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo  3 місяці тому +1

      @@kenchikenray9749 That sounds awesome! I think some genres such as MMO can make use of a true open world in ways other genres such as action-adventure can't. And in the case of Tibia, it really takes full command of it's gameplay and what open worlds can do, which is amazing. I love that there's that social aspect too, I frequently read webnovels where they describe game world with that exact bit, and it's something of dreams for me, who never really got into MMO's. Thanks for sharing man! It's seriously super interesting to learn about c:

    I think there are two considerations that make or break and open world: (1) Why -- is it to give an interesting place to explore, or a place to build and create, or is it to inflate play time or to market the game as open world because open world are seen as popular? And (2) How -- is it made with an appropriate density of interesting content, or full of hap-hazardly place stuff or content spit out randomly by an algorithm, using procedural generation to save time pad out the content.

    • @iRywo

      Oh completely. The flood of space based open worlds displays the why a lot. It honestly seems like natural progression, at some point the only grander thing you can make is universe.. and I'm not sure if it's at all times an interesting why, especially when there's already a few great ones..
      And the how.. god how I wish every game would focus on the how more. Even a non-interesting world can be made interesting by properly approaching the how if you ask me..

    I don't really like open world games. I tried to like them, but there comes a point where I just go around the world going 'so what?' It's cool and all to explore a big open world, but it all feels pointless.
    What I prefer are games that feel open, but aren't actually open, or well they are, but not as open as you think. The most recent example I've played of the kind of thing i'm talking about is Crystal Project. It's jrpg modelled after early final fantasy games with some platforming and a big world and no guidance other than explore and find crystals.
    The world's quite largr and after the intro area, opens up with lots of paths to explore, but you can't go everywhere, at least not at first. Over the course of the game you find different mounts that allow you to reach areas couldn't beforr and slowly over the course of the game the game the entire world opens up without any kind of pushing from a main story, simply your choices in where you explore.
    That's what I find is missing in a lot of open world games. Your skills opening the world. It's one thing to have an area locked behind a 'crucial main quest path' it's another thing to have an area locked behind something that can only be overcome by something you found randomly in your travels that may or may not even seem important until you try using it and realize what it does.
    I feel like they didn't quite understand what made the LoZ so good, it wasn't the freedom to explore anywhere and everywhere you wanted, it was the fact that you couldn't quite go anywhere or everywhere you wanted until you found something that let you get past whatever was stopping you and not something you were given in a quest or through events in a main story, just something you found on your adventure that you gained by killing monsters or finding hidden in a dungeon you decided to explore.
    Open world games seem to want to show off their worlds and let you go wherever you want. But they forget, one of the motivations for human exploration is to get to that place or that thing that seems just out of reach and that feeling of discovering the way to that thing that's out of reach is lost in a lot of open world games because nothing is out of reach in those games and if it is, the way to it is likely locked behind a story mission of some kind.

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo  3 місяці тому +1

      I completely agree, and I had never heard of Crystal Project but I should give it a try! I love the idea of open worlds, but like you I often feel like it's missing a certain type of structure or incentive to actually go explore.
      Thats where I felt very different about for example Breath of the Wild. Because while it is very open world and there isn't a lot of structure in terms of "you need this item or thing to get there", I loved how when you set a destination (I need to get to point B because of this quest) you'd suddenly be playing for 5 hours because you kept stumbling onto things that you'd get distracted by. And it's not even that those things took long to do, it's just that there were so many of them and they still felt incredibly varied in their experience.
      I feel like what you explain with paths opening thanks to items reminds me a lot of metroidvanias, like Hollow Knight as a recent example. Yes you can explore and go crazy, but at some point you need certain things to go beyond what you've already seen and surprise! It's a boss you haven't found yet.
      Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching! It's very interesting to hear about other people's experiences! Definitely going to check Crystal Project a try c:

    Open worlds are a big task, thats why triple a mainly take on the task, sadly means youll get mostly dog slop
    You dont need a open world to have the feeling of exploration
    You need to play to the strengths that are unique to open worlds, the journey itself, too many use fast travel as a crutch or flood the player with too many consumables or just have uninteresting mechanics
    Remove points of the interest, and story from an open world, is the game still enjoyable? Or is it a holding w simulator
    Make traveling fun, make resources mean something, make combat or whatever system you have in place interesting, then points of interesting can mearly add on to the experience

      I completely agree! I actually did an essay during my studies about the impact of an open world with a non-linear story vs one with a linear story and ended it by saying that a linear story doesn't just help to add structure, but also helps to guide the player through the exploration.
      As long as the foundation of a game is bad, it'll not be a great game, but this is even more so with open world games because it makes it just a big ol' empty world.
      Fast travel is one of my biggest issues with open worlds, and I have had thoughts of making a video on at some point as well!
      Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoyed it!

    open world games are bad when they try to be open world immediately. It's all about unfolding that open world. FF7 as well as Zelda did this beautifully. You'd feel like you had the illusion of open world, by being able to explore a vast area, however, you couldn't progress until you did xy and z. That is how you make a great open world game.
    Linearity is actually really good and there's multiple ways to do linearity, but when people talk about that word, they only think of it in one way and one way only.
    If you want to tell a good story, you need some form of linearity.
    Also BOTW sucks as a Zelda game. It's not a real Zelda game and I will die on this hill

    • @iRywo
      @iRywo  3 місяці тому +1

      I definitely think linearity is something very important for a good story to unfold. Of course there can be decision based impact on it's linearity (take the supermassive games for example).
      I'm not sure if I completely agree with BotW not being a Zelda game haha, but I think that's also super subjective. It did get a lot closer to for example the original the Legend of Zelda game in it's concept and experience, it just stepped away from the more recent games such as Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Would you call hyrule warriors a Zelda game? Or Link's crossbow training? For me the main concept of a Zelda game is: Link saves Zelda and beats Ganon through his adventure. Which makes BotW a Zelda game, but at the same time, story wise BotW is a LOT worse than the prior games. It's just about what your preferred experience is I suppose, story based game or gameplay based game (not that they have to be mutually exclusive).
      Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate a good discussion c:

    • @kukukachu
      @kukukachu 3 місяці тому +1

      @@iRywo absolutely (to the first part)
      My reasoning for calling BOTW out is because as you said, "Is Hyrule Warriors a Zelda game?" No, no it's not. "Is Link's Crossbow training?" Again, no, no it's not and those right there are 2 perfect examples to my argument. Hyrule Warriors is disgusting. Dynasty Warriors has basically become Leatherface and it's so disgusting. Hyrule Warriors is the dead decaying skin of Zelda hanging off of Dynasty Warriors...how's that for imagery?
      Didn't like it with Persona, didn't like it with Fire Emblem, didn't like it with Zelda.
      As for Zelda's Crossbow, I have mixed feelings on that one. I do believe that the wii version of Twilight princess used those controls, yes? If that's the case, a little tech demo isn't bad.
      Now, people like to say that BOTW is like the original Zelda, or close to it, but that's not true at all. You see, even the original Zelda had a certain linear structure you had to follow within the open world. You still had to beat 3 specific temples before you could progress any further into the game, and that's my problem with the new Zeldas, the original structure isn't there. BOTW is a non Zelda game that once again has the disgusting decaying skin of Zelda hanging off of it...
      There's something that's been going on with Zelda games since OoT, and I wonder if you noticed it. Every Zelda after OoT has continually gotten smaller and smaller and smaller. I'd say that Twilight princess was pretty big, but I'm not talking about size of map, I'm talking about content as well as extra padding. I noticed it in Wind Waker as well. That game should have had at least 1 or 2 more dungeons.... It was a great game, but it didn't quite feel right. It always felt like something was missing. Twilight's story was unfortunately plagued by VERY BIG, VERY BAD plot holes. That definitely killed my enjoyment of the game. I'd say it was a pretty fun game, but Nintendo messing up the story really hurt its potential.
      Skyward Sword had some great ideas, however the execution of those ideas were VERY poor. I was so disappointed with how much of the game was reused and how uninteresting the floating islands were. There was barely anything to discover up there, and when you finally opened up another area of the sky map, it was nothing....Nintendo really dropped the ball on the sky islands and the potential it really had. And then only having like 3 different areas that you repeatedly went to on land was rather lackluster...OMG and don't get me started with the stupid toe demon as well as that dumb tentacle boss OMG, he didn't look like he even belonged in the game. He looked like he belonged in Monster Inc... Zelda has pretty much been getting worse and worse with every new installment.
      As for A Link Between Worlds...that was pretty much just Link to the Past, but remade. Nintendo has been getting VERY lazy and cannibalistic with their IPs. I'm glad that TotK didn't do as well as Nintendo hoped it would. They deserve to feel that. WTF was that about Zelda and Ganon turning into dragons? REALLY?!
      Anyways, TL;DR, zelda has been getting worse in terms of content with every release and BOTW was no different with the lack of interesting things to find as well as lack of enemies in the game. The structure of BOTW completely goes against what a Zelda game actually is. Zelda has continually been losing it's identity since OoT, but slowly. There were 0 dungeons in BOTW. Those divine beasts couldn't even be considered dungeons lol.
      I agree, I appreciate discussion as well. I don't mind certain things changing, but there are certain structures to a Zelda game that you DO NOT touch.

      @@kukukachu It tends to be the case that IP's degrade in quality over time, I mean look at Pokemon as an easy example. Most people would agree that the games have taken a downturn after the release of the 4th generation.. I only played specific Zelda's and actually never played OoT or MM, so I can't say much for how the games have gotten worse/different over time. I think in the end it really depends on the person whether they prefer the non-existent "freedom focussed" structure of BotW, or instead prefer the more linear style that the games have had prior. I personally did enjoy Breath of the Wild, but then again like I said, my experiences with Zelda were limited to games like Phantom Hourglass and Link to the Past. I do believe BotW took a lot of inspiration from the first one, but they definitely also changed a lot of things whether it was due to updating it to fit with modern gaming trends or just because they felt it fit better with the game design. It's a tricky one. I actually thought TotK did fantastically well with it's sales, breaking the record for most sales in 3 days of any Nintendo game and such, but I might not be as updated on the recent numbers. It does suck massively when a IP like this alienates it's original playerbase as they continue producing newer games. It's a tricky subject to talk about too without turning into a screaming match, especially when it's so personal to so many people.
      What I do love is when the alienated playerbase goes ahead and makes their own IP that sticks to the tried and true structures, gameplay and vision of the game they loved, doesn't happen often, but when it does, I'm all for it.
