- Juji Came by recently and wanted Dave's advice on how to use the deadlift for specific hypertrophy work. Turns out he shouldn't!

This is priceless coaching Dave's giving us, and Juji.
Ohhh, I am sure he could quote you a price ;)
I love these type of clips especially. Love the specificity they get into and individualization details...even though I'm not Juji, I still learn from these type of videos to apply to my own self and also for others I may train in the future. If you pay enough attention, you can learn concepts that can apply to my own training.
Thanks for the awesome content Dave,
Marine Mike 🇺🇸
Dave’s coaching is so much better than anyone else I’ve seen.
A living legend and invaluable educational content. Thank you so much Dave and Team elitefts.
Yes and no. Half the time Dave just says random shit he thinks makes sense but doesn't actually if you break it down.
I'm learning so damn much from all the videos... I just recently got into deadlifting.. and I'm 46. Most of my lifting/training experience came from 22 years of being in the US Army.
I found great success with Block pulls, during my prep I always do block pulls instead of heavy conventionals. I still do variations of deadlifting of the floor but majority of my heavy pulls are done on blocks.
The Rocky poster in the background at the very beginning of the video is awesome! Great info guys! Love the collaboration.
Nice, I still really like these purely informative videos. Cool that you shared it, even if it probably won't get a lot of views
You guys are awesome , and you have inspired me to start a fitness journey and record it on UA-cam.
Started deadlifting in my very early 40's...maybe close to 275 for a max?! Even through shutdowns and having delays in training, I hit 430 just before my 43rd birthday. Now I hit 405 with ease...trying for 500 now. The progress may come a tad slower...but my wife and I are hitting PR'S in all kinds of lifts lately. Here's to Masters division lifting! 💪
Awesome
nice man
Hell yes! I am in college, and so many of my friends don't do the big compound movements and stick to machines, without any form of progressive overload. It's sad to see because they don't really improve much. I'm glad we got people going hard still!
Wait till u hit 46yrs old....the power doesn't stop....I'm stronger now then when I was 30
Hell yeah. I started lifting at couple years ago at 32, and my long term goal is to be badass as a Masters lifter. Awesome progress!
I am not an IFBB pro or 700lb deadlifter but I have been amazed by how much my deadlift has maintained and even increased without directly training it. I do heavy leg press, back extension machine, and 1 belt-less single 2 days a week. I no longer have back pain and I pull more belt-less now for a single than when I used to actually train them.
I have had cases where i havent been able to deadlift pre and during lockdown era and what amazes me is that deadlift strenght doesn't seem to deteriorate at all. I feel weaker if i go 2-3 weeks without benching but i think 1-2 months without deadlifting doesn't have that big of an effect...
The issue comes when you don't dead lift, but you can rep with 2,000 lbs on the angled leg press. Then your legs can write a check you back can't cash.
Great points. Especially with the comparisons of arm flexion and leg flexion training.
Love these videos So much information to absorb from the knowledge of Dave. Please keep them coming
Thanks Elitefts
Wonderful coaching and a great athlete. You guys rock, thank you!
6:36 "I don't know how to do this!"
Me, everyday at the gym at least two to three times per workout.
Thanks a lot for this info 🙌🙌 when my shoulder heals from my distal clavicle resection, I’m excited to try some of this 💪💪
Can’t get enough of these videos. Quality characters, quality content
Juji and Dave! My other podcast can wait until after this
Is Jujimufu going to be part of the Elite FTS crew in the near future? Because I can totally get on board with that!
I love the dings indicating he's moved on to a new point. It's easy to get lost sometimes in Dave's ramblings (which is good!!) His brain is so full of awesome info, it just spills out
i think thats his apple watch lol
@@lolrofl5 hahaha I thought I was on to something
Just a theory, but it’s worked for me. Something else that may help recovery from the deadlift is to do something that decompresses your spine like lat pulldowns right after your deadlifts, or even just hangs. And then follow it up with some more hamstring exercises like leg curls for high reps, like 20-50, to get the blood flowing in and out of the muscle that’s pumped
thats good advice
Other than occasional tension headaches I never have recovery issues after deadlifts. Due to my leverages, my deadlift is mostly leg/hip drive. Oddly, I have far more recovery issues with squat and I don't lift as much squatting.
Heavy block pulls are great for back builder when its done right. Great video
Always a great collaboration between dave and juji
Im so early Juji hasnt even backflipped yet
Love the combination of passion, experience and humility.
Everyone is different! Thanks for the video!
You bet!
Great video.
...We plead the fifth...
I love that Dave always stand controversial yet brave...
Love juji and found Dave because of juji and to know they're in the same state as me is nice
I mean Jack the Deadlift Ripper tried to teach him to leg press to hip thrust, with speed, yet Juji still hypers to hip thrust. It's odd. Hopefully Dave can help! Thumbnail got me curious
Can u get Eric bugenhagen in there for a workout
A lot of great information here. I’ve thought of the hamstring curl the same way Dave talks about it here. I love the monkey foot product for that reason. It really forces you to control it the same way you control a curl.
Personally I just do singles/cluster singles for my strength work and I can still hit my bodybuilding work after without being too dead.
I love that tank top and hoodie.
RDLs and loaded carries, step ups or sled dragging would be better. I feel like regular high rep deadlifts fry the CNS more than any other exercise I've done

same.
Serious question, what's the point of deadlifting? It doesn't really translate to anything. For hypertrophy purposes, you can just pick from 10+ compound variations/machines that will do the same without progressively destroying your back.
I know this is off topic but juji's shoulders are looking great the best I've ever seen 🔥
Am I the only one who find block pulls to be harder than a deadlift from the floor? It might be because I am not proficient at the movement but it is definitely a harder lift for me.
With the same weight?? Impossible
Because you are taking out the leg drive of the lift and it becomes more posterior chain. Good indicator that you should train that movement more often to build your deadlift from the floor.
@@getpumped87 Huh, that's great insight. And it makes sense. The hardest part about rack pulls for me is breaking the bar from the pins. It would make sense that I am not using leg drive and trying to stiff leg it up. Thanks for the comment.
@@zfortyounce LLPO, my dude
Hell no he shouldn’t stop deadlifting. I’m about to do deadlifts myself and couldn’t be happier about it!
He said before prep. Thus, he's probably still deadlifting, but before a show deadlifts wears him out. DL's are exceptionally demanding when in a calorie deficit. Maybe not the first day, lol, but when you are far into a prep they are grueling. They are so hard to recover from because they completely drain you when you are far into a prep. It's like the fucking reaper shows up to carry you to your deathbed.
@@jaghad ok
Everytime dave inhales take a shot
I would love if anyone would answer this. I have been wondering for a long time if I could do deadlifts off blocks instead off rack-pulls. Rack-pulls require a proper power-rack and my gym has only half-racks and I need to stand on boxes/aerobic step-ups etc to get it to work. Its a hassle.
But setting up for block deadlifts is easier, and to me it seems like the same movement. Is it though? Can I substitute rack-pulls with block deadlifts?
Yes
Definitely
When did Dave start bodybuilding coaching? lol
What do you guys think of paused deadlifts using lower weight, kind of what Martins does?( he pauses just below the knee caps each way and tries to make 0 sound on each floor tap) Is that a good alternative to conserve fatigue and retain the deadlift training?
"I like to specialise" - Said the leading expert and advocate on conjugate based-training
holy fuck juji looking JACKED SON
Can't he do a sealrow shrug with the same grip?
And also seated zearcher lifts to isolate the upper erectors for hypertrophy and lockout power.
Because you can't have Juji loose erector thickness, remember guys the erectors aren't just "the lower back".
You can always stretch at the end of the workout uwu
Juji, get Dave to do the splits on chairs
Or just go 1 inch below the knee. Unless your competing in strongman like dorian yates said why do them. The risk to reward ratio is high. You can do other stuff to trian the back thats less dangerous.
That a cool hat.
Buddy seems so insecure about angles and how he appears in the camera, his body language is painful to watch. Just relax man
Jujis arms are massive
Tren hard, eat clen, anavar give up
Juji shouldn't stop deadlifting, but he just needs to learn how to progress
Still dehydrated? Eddie Hall has entered the room,.,.,,.
