    It is a bit ironic that the same motorists that think it is too dangerous for a motorcycle to overtake in slow or stalled traffic have no problem with overtaking a bicycle that is in the same lane of traffic as they. The laws are skewed toward the majority that do not ride motorcycles.

      @@justauserfiltering is travelling through stopped traffic and and splitting is switching lanes to progress through moving traffic neither of which is illegal in the UK as long as it's done safely the old bill can grab you for dangerous driving/overtaking if you lane split or filter like a twat but as long as you don't do that both are perfectly legal

    Well done. Only x factor unaccounted for is the plain ole cussedness of people; their tendency to try to block or obstruct a rider, increasing the danger and unpredictability of splitting. That said, I support free choice, but personally don't trust cagers enough to try it myself.

    I'm from Europe and here every one does lane splitting without a problem. Car drivers even open for motorcycles to pass. I don't really understand why in US so many people complain about that. If a car driver can't deal with motorcycles lane splitting they shouldn't even be driving because it's evident they're driving skills must completely suck.

      It’s one of those weird things here. Of course, Americans are so America centric, and often don’t know everyone else does it, or if they do, don’t care because if we do it differently then we must know something everyone else doesn’t.

    I use to ride 50 miles one way so in an average work week 500 miles, in sunny Southern California. I lane share the whole way except on surface streets. Freeways are safer in my opinion. Everyone is going in the same direction at relatively the same speed. That being said. Lane sharing at 80 when everyone is doing 70 to 75 no big deal. It’s when there is a traffic jam you continue that speed between cars. Which is bad because everyone is trying to find that lane that is less effected by the jam. I’ve had people at least once every quarter, (3months) show their dislike of the advantage motorcyclists have in lane sharing. That’s why I go slow enough to scan head movements and mirror scans of the 4 wheeled folk. They sometimes broadcast their intentions like a poker tell. For example a guy mouthed watched this to all his buddies in the car, as he noticed me coming. Gripped the top of his steering wheel at the 12 o’clock with both hands, stared into his side mirror, and waited. He wasn’t really paying attention to the traffic in front, he closed that gap and had no room to come out far enough to effect me. I rode out far enough to avoid his attempt. This was on an on-ramp to a different freeway, so they have wide shoulders.

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  4 роки тому

      As long as I’m going over 20 MPH, I’m good. The high-speed flying between cars is what people who think that lane splitting/lane sharing is a dangerous behavior, when it’s really just for working through slow or stopped traffic.

    Tbh, I've been lane splitting and filtering up here in canada since i started riding and even tho its illegal here cagers dont care and even make a space for me if they realize what im trying to do. Cops dont really care unless you do it aggressively.
    The main issue is that with it being illegal cagers usually have no idea that im intending to do it. Usually i have to use lane positioning to condition them to leave me room

      I can’t speak for all states, but in mine, that would be an illegal lane change because it was done within ~100 feet of the intersection. Demonstrates what most car drivers are afraid of (Even though lots of the time it’s gonna be the car drivers fault for being oblivious).

    Lane filtering reduces traffic congestion and helps prevent stupid drivers from rear ending bikes. As for lane splitting, I think its pretty stupid to try and make it between two vehicles because inevitably one of them will try and change lanes without looking or try and squeeze you out. That being said, from an environmental viewpoint its dumb to have a vehicle that can make the gap sitting in traffic taking up space that a car needs to reduce congestion. Personally I think both should be legal. Motorcycles are more dangerous mostly because of stupid car and truck drivers not paying attention. The bike itself isn't really inherently more dangerous if by itself.

  • @jerrypeevey
    @jerrypeevey Рік тому +1

    I have always split lanes in California. They made it legal here and all of a sudden people started using their rear view mirrors. Now we still get some tourist who drive here and don't turn right at a red light and get jealous of motorcycles that get to cheat. Just or not the reason we do it ,,,,,,,,, Motorcycles are air cooled for the most part. So you have to keep moving to keep from over heating. That is what started it. Blame the CHP because they actually look at it that way or did way back in the day and when off duty they still split lanes and felt it unjust to write tickets for something they do all day long. Then the benefit of motorcycles over cars must have some reward over the danger of riding one around cars.

  • @hufismissing
    @hufismissing Рік тому

    Lane splitting when done safely obv will reduce traffic, car drivers seeing this will also encourage others to get motorcycles further reducing traffic, and with more motorcyclists around makes the average driver subconsciously more aware of motorcyclists. Making motorcycles a bit safer as well. Its a win win for everyone involved

    You said that motorcycle shouldn't be allowed to lane split between two lanes going opposite directions when its not really dangerous as long as you don't go a insane speed and have common sense. I considered it just like overtaking and it didn't slow anyone else down.

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  4 роки тому

      I acknowledge it's not impossible to do safely, but my argument against it is due to the disparity in speed between opposite direction traffic. Even if we are talking arterial streets that are 25MPH, if each vehicle is going only the speed limit this would be a 50 MPH difference which increases the mobility of an accident and severity.
      However, if traffic is dense and moving very slowly (We can imagine a large city like New York or London) so that the speed differential is within the 15-25 mph zone, and the road is wide enough to allow it, then I don't have many arguments against it

    I think lane filtering (while traffic is going less then 30km/h) is okay but splitting between cars at highway speeds is the issue since you don't have time to react enough. People will go 140km/h doing a wheelie in bumper to bumper traffic, meanwhile people are slowing trying to change lanes and don't use their signals, it's just not always great

  • @paweb3530
    @paweb3530 Рік тому

  • @TheLucas2696
    @TheLucas2696 Рік тому

    I really don't understand all the bills specifying roads that you can cannot split on by speed limit. That seems completely irrelevant if you already have a speed differential limit and a surrounding traffic speed limit in place (not more than 15 mph of surrounding traffic when surrounding traffic is doing 20mph or less, etc). Being able to split on a grid-locked highway is probably one of the most important times to be able to split when it comes to rider safety.

    Nice job, as usual. Had to keep pausing the video to read all the notes, but worth it. I'm in CA, so I feel spoiled ... One of the factors that keeps me from moving back home is that I can legally split lanes.
    Question:
    I think of lane splitting as splitting one lane into two (shoulder riding is an example). Some think it means splitting between two lanes. Thoughts?

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  5 років тому +2

      Same. I categorize it all under ‘Using available road’. Shoulder riding is probobly more a thing where splitting isn’t legal, so people use the shoulder instead because it seems more comfortable having vehicles on only one side.

  • @grimmreaper7021
    @grimmreaper7021 5 років тому +1

    Someday lane splitting may be safer. For now drivers have not become accustom to motorcycles riding on the lines. If it is legal, over time drivers will learn and remember a bike could come by at anytime. However, if you look at speeding cars do it all the time with minimal risk compared to speeding while lane splitting. If all obeyed traffic laws then no problem, even with lane splitting or filtering. Until then , ... then may never arrive 💀

    • @kingacrisius
      @kingacrisius Рік тому

      Lane splitting IS inherently dangerous. Just because moving slowly in between stopped traffic isn't dangerous doesn't mean that the act itself usually isn't dangerous. Most applications of lane splitting ARE dangerous both to you and the people around you. Like you talk about how there are ways to lane split safely while showing a bunch of videos where the lane-splitting motorcyclist gets into an accident despite being very safe and attentive, because there was simply nothing they could have done. There was no space for them to maneuver and they had no time to react because they have practically no visibility in that tiny gap.

    Actions should not be illegal, it should be up to the individual to judge the dangers to themselves / others of their actions and make their own choice, however the consequences of performing a dangerous action should be severe if they cause harm to others, e.g riding at 150+ mph if nobody is harmed then the rider has judged the situation correctly and should face no punishment because nobody was harmed, if the same rider is doing 150mph but hits someone causing them harm then they should be punished not just for crashing but for the dangerous action they have performed

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  5 років тому +4

      The argument you hear to this is that ‘Some people have bad judgement, so the law disincentives reckless behavior’, which I understand on its face.
      I don’t agree that a persons judgement can be based entirely on the results, and we do need to take other situational context into consideration to make a value statement on ‘Jusgement’. The person driving 150 though traffic without crashing can’t say that it’s entirely their judgement to thank, they have relied on other drivers awareness of the situation and plain luck to avoid that crash, as they could not have reacted to an unexpected driver behavior at that speed.
      Instead of reducing freedom though, I would rather focus on improving people’s judgement and skills.

    I like the way you break down 'fair'. Here in the UK it is legal but also not encouraged in your riding test. It's kind of a grey area because it is not mentioned in our Highway code, meaning it's not a practise they endorse but on the other hand, the Highway code doesn't say you can't do it. Many people pull over to the side to give you more room or to create a space for you to get by. However the other view on fair comes in and people do everything they can to cut your space down or block you in so you cannot get past, sometimes going to lengths of what would be considered dangerous driving just to stop you from making progress they can't. We also have obligatory no mirror users or texting drivers as I am sure you do in the States. The rule for a biker filtering in the UK from a law perspective is that it must be done with "due care and attention" that can be quite a subjective topic for opinion but it generally works and whilst you do get the odd fool riding like an idiot the same is true for car drivers as well. I split between ongoing traffic, but I make sure I've always got somewhere to get safe at all times, should the need arise with large vehicles coming the opposite way. That being said, if I feel the risk is quite high or feel as though my actions will impact someone else (causing them to swerve) I'll just sit and wait, I'm not in a rush to go to hospital or the grave.

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  5 років тому

      I did find that ‘Do it safely’ clause in the U.K. rule to be irritating, I wonder how many people feel unfairly targeted by that? It seems culturally the law enforcement in the U.K. is less... aggressively authoritarian? So maybe less abuse happens there.
      Lots of people confuse ‘Legalize’ with ‘Require’ and you’ve given a perfect example of how you can opt-in and out with your comfort level in each situation.

      @@SquidTips Hmm interesting point. I've filtered past lots of Police and none have cared. That being said, in the UK you can be pulled over for literally any reason, including no reason at all and you are required to stop and produce your licence if asked. You get the usual mix of Police from Firm and Fair to Power hungry bully. Most of us on sportbikes are mostly targets because of noisy exhausts more than anything, but 120db v-twin Harley riders never seem to be pulled at all. Police usually don't have sound testing equipment so it usually boils down to having a massive amount of your time wasted lol

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  5 років тому +1

      That’s actually how this video began; As a tool people could use to send to lawmakers to try to persuade them to vote for lane splitting legislation.
      But then I realized that most lawmakers probobly wouldn’t watch a video unless it was insanely boring and bereft of entertainment value, or specifically designed to target them. On top of that, elected officials are just delegates for the population, and so the real solution is to educate a broader audience so that they can make their own case.
      In the end, I’m one person, but somehow likeminded people find themselves watching my videos. I believe that if I can arm people with the information and arguments that’s are strong and logically consistent, then they will better be able to push for legislation than I can as one person.

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  5 років тому +1

      If that stuff exists I think you could either improve road conditions, or maybe put up a sign of some form like ‘Caution Motorcycles: Poor road conditions for X miles’. As long as you are driving slowly, even gravel and metal can be fine if you are taking precautions. But I’m guessing traffic is less of an issue in your area, so it’s less likely to even be something a rider would want to do.

I won't lie never paid attention to the subject much. Also yeah on poor roads it would still allow rider to decide for themselves if they think they can. But just thought it may be another reason they haven't yet. I fully agree with all the points you made though don't get me wrong. Lane splitting is illegal because, splitting a lane is basically riding the yellow line(s)down the middle of two lanes going in the opposite directions! So yes it should not be done! I’ve had to share this with a CHP (California Highway Patrol) at work. Maybe I’m being literal but let’s be clear. Splitting is bad and sharing is caring. Otherwise what else do they call going between two vehicles when one of them is going in the opposite direction than you? Dangerous and illegal! I appreciated your arguments previously, and they really formed the backbone for how I came at this argument. I also like the MSF, they do great work, I simply don’t believe in not educating people on tactics and strategies is because of mixed legality. They do have several statements supporting lane splitting, I just think they should take the next logical step in an effort to encourage sage splitting.

    • @coach-chris
      @coach-chris 5 років тому +2

      Ironically I just completed an MSF course and they covered the topic of lane splitting and acknowledged how it's controversial, yet legal in CA, yet not "officially sanctioned". They also covered how and when to safely lane split and how and when not to and that it had the potential to actually improve rider safety in cases where the rider has the skill level and confidence to execute properly and judiciously.
      The fact is, I plan to lane split when I acquire that comfort level and I only plan to do it during standstill traffic… or if highway traffic is moving at less than 10 mph. As a cautious, aware, and conscientious CAR driver, I'm dismayed by how many close calls I've nonetheless had as well as witnessed among my fellow car drivers during stop and go traffic. Drivers get worn out and tired after driving in slow highway traffic for a whole hour. They think everyone is moving along at 5mph only to suddenly realize that the car in front of them has come to a full stop and they have to slam on their brakes.
      I refuse to be a part of any such sandwiches.
      Cars are too big and heavy and hard to maneuver to put my safety into the hands of tired commuters, distracted soccer moms in giant SUVs, and tractor-trailer truckers trying to save on brakes and fuel and make good time. People tailgate (around here at least), in a very, very bad way. I'm not going to play that game. If I were to allow myself to become a victim to other people's bad driving, regardless of whether my behavior is illegal, legal, or otherwise… I would say "shame on me". I value my life over fairness, convenience, ettiequte, or law. Lane splitting, for me, is not just about making better time and wasting less fuel, thereby benefitting the planet… it's also about me ALWAYS maintaining an active escape route from the constantly expanding and compressing traffic at slow speeds.
      The fact is, if you're stopped, it's much harder to make an escape than if you're already in motion. If you're stopped, you're also likely getting worn down and lulled into being less attentive to driving and start thinking about other stuff or looking at billboards or the lady doing her eyes next to you. At the opposite extreme… if you're always moving slightly faster than everyone else, it's easier to control your own fate; you always have options to you available to maneuver; your brain is warmed up and paying attention; modest momentum is always in your favor vs the inertia of standing still -or having to micro-manage constantly changing speeds which are all slow enough that you could find yourself alternating between walking your bike and driving it.
      Because even at just 10mph, a 2500 lb car is gonna hurt really bad. Especially if there's another one stopped in front of you or trying to change lanes just as the one behind you is not keeping a healthy distance and the one in front of you has stopped. Better to already be in a "lane" where you can proactively act as well as react quickly to accelerate or slow down without fear (or sometimes ditch into one of the real lanes if need be). Even as a car driver, I've always endeavored to avoid being without escape routes. I always try to position myself and drive in such a way as to avoid being locked in by surrounding drivers… most of whom are totally not even mentally present.
      Let me ask you this, for the sake of the thought experiment: imagine you're a pedestrian walking on the highway during bumper to bumper traffic that's barely moving. Pretend this is the reality you live in… where cars and pedestrians intermingle, and cars are always stuck in traffic not moving more than 10mph, and they're coming to near and full stops frequently such that you can basically walk at the same speed as them. Would you dutifully stay within the confines of a car lane and hope they see you? Hope for the best? Would you feel that you would be safer moving in their lanes but spending orders of magnitude more time sharing the road with them than by walking a path between them and avoiding them as much as possible and also shortening the time you spend sharing the road with them drastically? Wouldn't you allow yourself the freedom of jumping off to the side and walking between and around them as needed? Which do you feel is the safer option?

    I'm fine with lane splitting as long as it's understood that the biker is going be at fault 90% of the time. Bikers are entitled to a full lane width, but so are the cars on the road. If you invade my lane, or lane split while I'm changing lanes (while using my indicators of course) and we collide, then I'm not paying for any of your property or personal damage and your probably gonna be paying for damage to my car. You lane split at your own risk. I don't trust car and truck drivers enough to put myself at needless risk. The fact that it's only "legal" in CA, supports my stance, since the other 99% of the country just watches what CA does, then does the opposite and remains normal. As far as I know, there is no mandated distance that cars and trucks are required to leave between them while remaining within their lanes, so what makes motorcyclists so sure they will leave enough distance between them for a lane splitting squid on a farkled-out Hayabusa with 6" frame sliders? It just pisses off the car and truck drivers around them and who wants that (see any car vs bike road rage video)? Stay in your lane, wait your turn and shut up. If Californians can't get to work on time, either move to a normal state or leave your home earlier. Not rocket science.

    • @SquidTips
      @SquidTips  4 роки тому

      Your totally right, it is a risk, and the rider is the one that will pay the price if it doesn’t work out. There is no mandated distance between cars because roads are varying widths based on age, location, and purpose, so riders choosing to split must develop a sense for when it is safe and when it is not.
      Most people looking to lane split aren’t looking to do it at 25+ MPH; It’s for when traffic is at a crawl due to the various inefficiencies of the many highway systems across the nation. The more locations that allow splitting/filtering behaviors the more proper we can get operating smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles that reduce overall traffic. It’s a win/win for cars and bikes for anyone who can take a moment to consider the higher level implications, and overcome their initial misplaced anger at the ‘Unfairness’ of the act.
      It may not be the majority of states in the US, but most countries in the world allow Lane Splitting. We are the outlier.

    • @NeckarPirate
      @NeckarPirate 4 роки тому +1

      @@SquidTips Yup, I get it and I travel all over the world on business. The riders are on the losing end in all of them. Most of Europe is okay, as their drivers are more respectful of bikes and conscious of how they drive, but you should see some of the third-world mayhem...I've seen many a dead motorcyclist/scooter rider in those countries, so just because they can do it, doesn't mean they'll live to brag about the 10 minutes they saved riding to work and doesn't mean that we should follow suit.
