this reminds me of our beloved Jack Braham (RIP) the only driver EVER TO WIN A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. WHO designed and built HIS OWN CAR. NO sponsorship no multi million dollar hand out by the government. JUST SHEER GUTS TO WIN. AND BE A GREAT AUSSIE.
That's SIR Jack!
Brabham, not braham
He was sponsored when you consider that Repco did all the development work gratis on the Engine that was based on an early 1960's Oldsmobile alloy block V8 that was in fact the grandfather of the Rover V8 and somewhat a cousin o the Leyland P76 V8.
Without that Engine that repco supplied and developed free of charge he would not have been Champion
317.6 Miles per Hour = 511.128 Kilometres an hour. That is faster than I can even imagine. Dayum!
Love how you actually upload this for our Australian "arvo" perfect timing
I had the privilege of watching Ken break this record when I was a child, learnt to water ski on the same dam :D
me too! such a big deal for a small little pretty town of Talbingo, good times. Best place to grow up.
“The Manning River in Ter-ee?” 😆 How fancy. 😂
Yep made my boat too and proud to say it does about 25 knots just enough to catch the tide and out run the crocs and it will catch more Barra than that thing
His fathers record was recorded in the Blowering Dam not 10 km from where I live. Dave is also using Blowering Dam. My husband and I are part of a rescue organisation who help by helping to clean up any debris in the water before each trial. You can actually hear the Jet from my home when he does his runs. The reason they use Blowering is that at full capacity it actually holds more water than Sydney Harbour. Its really impressive to watch him. He wanted to break the record with his dad watching, but his dad passed away before he could do that. Blowering Dam is part of the Snowy Hydro scheme in the Snowy Mountains of NSW. The shores of Blowering are one of the spots Aussies like to holiday at.👍
The big risk is getting airflow under the hull. That's when they launch up and flip.
7:16 😂😂😂 I was literally thinking the same thing Ryan. 188 Miles Per Hour.
Good video as usual, i appreciate you making a whole Channel just based on Australia, i think its very Cool
He also is Ryan Wass (Germany) and Ryan Wuzer (UK/Europe).
Knew Ken as he was a friend of my boss at the time sadly he is no longer with us and his exhibition jet powered dragster was another facet to the Warby's and in the case of that one it was helped by the apprentices at the RAAF base in south western NSW maintaining the Jet Engine for free.
The Boss was in a similar sport running what is known as a BAH Hydrofoil aka Blown Alchohol Hydrofoil called "Climax" ran in drag races near Hawksbury made over 160 Passes at around 7 second quarters at around 170 MPH running an early Keith Black Hemi with a PSI blower about 2500 HP on Methanol, Hence why he knew the Warbys similar interests
The Rolls Royce Orpheus jet engine formed the core of the engines used in the Hawker Siddeley Harrier ‘jump jet’s’ developed in England and used by American forces for many years. The basic Orpheus engine was used in the Italian Fiat G.91, which explains the origin of this particular engine.
I was around some 55 years back when builders (Stan Jones and partner Dick Carney) built a timber boat named Stampede, for racing mainly on Victorian Glenmaggie Wier. It was powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin V12 used in WW2 bombers. For several years it was the fastest Prop driven boat in Australia. Mechanic was an Englishman ex RAF who worked on these motors in planes. With their other apprentice we were lucky to have done this.
I was a freelance camerman back in the seventies and was regularly assigned by the ABC in Canberra to film Ken Warby's attempt at the water speed record. I was well up on the hill on the day of the record using an Eclair NPR 16mm camera on a Miller tripod with a Miller fluid head plus a Nagra 4.2 tape recorder. Years later he chased me down through a crowd to talk to me when I had walk by. He was a great bloke and apparently never forgot my contribution to record his greatest lifetime achievement!. I was saddened to hear of Ken's passing recently.
First thing you do to build a boat like that a jet get and strap a Tinny to it👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾all set now hold FUGGIN HOLD ON😳😳😳 TIGHT...
Competition for the best fishing spot is intense down under
When you find one you mark a cross on the side of the boat for next time
They never explained it but I'm thinking it's a familial reference because Dad has that wisdom of being there before...that's what I got out of it and for definitely sure because we carry these babies
There is a video around about Kens record called "Hit 300 and smile". I've seen this video with the man Ken Warby himself at Calder park dragway.
Have had the great pleasure of meeting Ken War by several times at Calder park dragway and Heathcote park dragway back in the early 1980s when he was pioneering racing jet dragster rails. Have had a few beers with him and a good yarn. He is a very humble and in assuming person true Aussie Legend. It was an honour to meet him.
I remember Ken Warby setting the record back in 1977. I was 26.
They come to Blowering dam for test runs, its fun to watch, I will let you know when they actually go for it. There is soooo many things that have to be spot on for them to make the attempt.
Always sharing things I never knew about..thanks Ryan 🎉
Ken Warby was my grandparents next door neighbor.
The Manning River is near Taree NSW.
Yes and it’s pronounced Tar ree not like that reporter said it
@@cherylemaybury9967
He won't make the attempt there, that will be made on Blowering Reservoir near Tumut where his father broke the record.
Near Taree? It is the eastern border of Taree. It's part of Taree. Can't get any nearer lol
Records are meant to be broken and the biggest advantage is to have more technology available which makes Ken's record lasting all these years quite remarkable.
watch the video " World's fastest boat - 511 km/h - Ken Warby - great documentary from 30 years ago" ken warby is still the record holder.
There is a video of Ken Warby's world record run, you just have to google it.
The reason Ken and Dave Warby chose Blowering Dam is because Blowering Dam is surrounded by mountains on three of its sides, very unique in the world, and is also long enough (over 10km) to make the most speed over the required measured (one km) distance in both directions.
His Dad Ken Warby built his boat in his back yard at concord NSW about 500 yards from my place, we used to see him out the back working on it, his first sponsor was the BP service station down the road from his place, he still holds the record today, many countries have spent millions of dollars building boats to beat him, none have, he used to sell miniature paintings at Westfield shopping centre Parramatta to make some money, pictures he painted himself. now it's his sons turn.
That's how it happens. Grab a snag at bunnings and build a jet boat on the weekend.
love this video! I happen to live in taree. Speed boats are a massive weekend activity here!
I've been waterskiing up there, it can be an obstacle course now, but great fun! 😄
The commentary called it T’ree, it’s pronounced Tah-ree. Lovely place, too.
= Over 500 kph! "Unsteerable" @ 2/3rds of that!? I don't want to be ANYWHERE on that riverbank, or anywhere within 'Cooeee" of that flying hunk of metal. Watching the clip is scary enough. Bet you no-one from the Italian Airforce would want to be anywhere in or near it either! Don't know about 'driving with your arse - but this is just NUTS!
I love that, buns of insight!!!!! Sooo going to use that one
You need to find footage on the original spirit of Australia his dad’s boat ken was rip the fastest man on water in the world he was my inspiration I raced boats from 4 years old to 23 and so did my dad. His dad still holds the record
Taree - ta ree with equal emphasis on the two syllables
Everyone needs a little crazy. We have it and it gets things done.
Ken used a second hand jet engine from I think an Orion he bought from the RAAF , built the boat in his backyard , the record has lasted since 1977 despite hi tech efforts to beat it.
Aussie also attrmpted land speed records on the salt plains of Lake Eyre
Aussie's have a need for speed race anything
Bet on anything as well
Have you seen Aussie burn out competitions
Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
That was pretty cool 😎
I have a slight memory of Ken Warby's record (my dad preferred sailing boats). A river is fine for testing, but they won't attempt the record there as there's currents, bridges, wildlife. Somewhere very calm and large is ideal: Dad Ken set his record on Blowering Dam west of Canberra, and Dave will be there in May this year.
“You feel it through your arse and that’s where you become part of the boat” I am afraid of this man’s “Toy box” 😈😱
apparently if you hit the water at 60mph you are dead,at any speed above that just dead anyway
if you like the boats you should check out the V8 Superboat championship, crazy quick jet boat racing
"If you hit a stick, or you hit a bird, or you hit a duck...." Uhm, are ducks not considered birds in Australia? 😅
Also he explains that the boat is built with a lot of fibreglass, a lot of wood and a lot of pine 😂
These blokes are definitely designed for speed and not educational speeches.
Not all of us are that silly! 😂😂
Saw the Spirt in the Maritime Museum two weeks ago, she still looks FAST
several Americans have tried to break this record after 1977 ,they are all dead
Yup. Beyond a certain point it just moves into Suicide Alley.
The only one who ever survived this was ken
Sounds like pure luck to me. Others shouldn't regard it as a 'benchmark'! How far is this guy prepared to go - just to beat his father's record! And someone said his father has since now passed. So- who's he tryng to prove what to?@@tanyiabailey4792
I saw Ken do this on Blowering and his aborted run the next day. Such a small and quiet boat compared to Bluebird but it did the job.
Hey Ryan, how about for an upcoming video, you and your wife make and try an Australian hamburger. For this it goes bun, burger patty, bbq sauce, cheese, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato, pickled beetroot, a pineapple ring and 2 pieces of crispy bacon with the top bun BARELY holding it all together
Tomato sauce instead of bbq sauce you heathen.
You should check out Felix Baumgartner the man who fell to Earth took just 34 seconds for Felix Baumgartner to hit Mach 1, creating a sonic boom. Now thats crazy
I remember that, I didn't think it went well in the end, but could be wrong
Have you ever seen the Video on Neal the Seal in Tasmania?
Ryan you make me laugh.
Holy sh.t!!!! 😮
They are certainly obsessive, macho, single minded and of course, won't be disuaded! Yes, as long as you have a really powerful engine and a really solid body, it's worth a try! "Spirt of Australia", that's a huge name and statement to live up to - our pioneer spirit? Madness, arrogance, genius? 🧐 (? Ben Lexcen's secret keel, when Australia II won the Anericas Cup in Fremantle 1983? 🤔)
Australia II won it in America, not Perth. Talk about rubbing the noses of the New York Yacht Club in it! Beautiful!
@@DeepThought9999 Not Perth, Fremantle! 😁
Hi son from Bali iv missed a few shows, boy is it hot here.
"she'll be right mate".
She said T’ree but it’s Tah-ree.
It's a plane without wings
Since that video stabilisers have been added to the tail
You need to look up the southern 80
They pronounced it wrong. It’s Tah- ree.
I live there.
I hope they attach a black box to his seat just incase something happens. Least then it should be easy enough for them to locate his body and also retrieve data too.
He has lots of safety gear and rescue teams watching all the time
3 have died trying to break Warby's record , and no one in Australia remembers him.
When you talk on on the radio you say things 3 times eg. Mayday mayday mayday. Not 1 not 2 but 3 times.
Thanks.
Just to make sure they get it at the other end.
Probs bought the engine on Amazon or Ebay - not much you can't buy online these days.
Top Fuel dragsters go in excess of 330MPH which is over 530KMPH in the 1/4 mile, doing anything close to that on water is suicide. Even the Top Fuel guys and gals, formula 1 drivers say there prayers and hug there loved ones every time they race. It is completely bonkers.
Happy arvo!
Sadly Ken Warby passed away 20th February 2023 aged 84 years.
Is that Metallica playing the background music for this video? It definitely sounds like them. Well at least for the first few minutes anyway. Then it seems to have changed to something else. Some electronic bs.
5:20 So, what kind of gas does an arse-driven boast take.
I worked with Dave. He works in Disability.
So its just like driving a bulldozer....all in the arse 🙄
It's basically a rocket with foils that floats. The pilots have "one foot on either side of the line", as the saying goes! 😲
There's NO WAY they can go for the record unless the surface is like GLASS!
Yes, we're crazy - crazy AWESOME! 🥰
M 🦘🏏😎
That's why Blowering Dam has been chosen
I was up there at blowering dam ,having a fish...and they did a test run in the new boat right past us ,turned round and went back past us at .some dickhead in a small boat ruined the pass...
Usually the dam is closed to the public when testing is being carried out. Seen guys being told that the dam is closed to the public and told to go to another dam. They're usually not happy, but when you have a crane and maritime officers blocking the boat ramp they get the idea.
