I was given this watch for my 50 birthday in 2007 brand new. Wear it every day and have travelled all over the world with it. Would never get rid of it.
Counting myself pretty lucky. Like you, after about 10yrs years of wanting one, I bought exactly the same reference here at home in the UK, also from eBay. I met the private seller himself but checked the serial by calling Omega UK first. I paid £1900 ($2400ish), and it couldn't be more complete. Inner/outer boxes, all cards, original hang tags, original unused polishing cloth, all links and even the protective front and back protective stickers removed when new. I couldn't have been happier but went a step further and immediately got it serviced by Omega. Not a bad call as I claimed on the warranty for a new crown within the first 12mths. Regardless, super happy!
Bought my Omega speedmaster on Ebay as well from a dealer in Japan. Watch was in great condition exactly like the photos. Actually was a great experience.
Jared Wagner - Yup, mine too. I try to schedule my deliveries for while she’s at work or out of town. I hide them all in my safe, but surprisingly, she never even looks at what watch I’m wearing!
Fyi, anything declared over $800 gets import fees tacked on. A colleague bought a Steinhart for $900+ and had a surprise $30 Fedex bill 4 months later come in the mail. Some sellers might not also declare the package less if folks want to go and ask, at the worst it's considered illegal depending on country and at best it doesn't insure the package should any number of unthinkables happen.
Yeah it's covered in "Examined by US Customs & Border Protection" tape. You can't be sure whether it was badly packed in Japan or just dumped back in the box after inspection. I know where I'd put my money.
Just purchased my own 2201.50 from Tokyo just last week. There are a lot of reputable watch shops selling secondhand luxury bags and watches, and as a tourist, you can be exempt from paying tax in many of them. Great experience and while my example has some flaws, the price was well worth it.
I bought this same watch in 2006 at duty free in St Martin, still have it today. Sometimes I think about selling it, to get a later version, but can’t seem to part with it. I’m lucky to still have the original box, manual, etc.
I own the same watch but the 45 mm version. Bought new. Great watch. Never any issues and still haven't had to service. I do sometimes wish I had the 42mm version instead though.
i own the 42 , orange version and soon it will be going its 1st full service after 12y or so .Thought about 45 when i bought it , and imho i made the right decision on 42 since trends do change after time , bigger is not always better ( i could easily get away with 45 but 42 on my wrist just is always right regardless the trends ). Enjoy you great watch , a classic .
Still a handsome watch and good deal, I wouldn't sweat the extra fees, you still came out ahead, miss the channel, thanks for the great vids you provided!
Great video. I like that you are real and down to earth kind of guy. Nothing like that urban snob guy, lol. I love the watch and Omegas in general. Your daughter is marvelous. Keep up the good work. I'm a new subscriber now.
I have this exact same model, size and spec bought in 2010, the first gen with this aesthetic in my opinion will never look dated and with the matte black dial and white painted numerals give the watch a more classic understated toolish look then the newer models as impressive as they are this still is a relatively modern and definitely robust Omega 600m diver, it's a great watch, mine is definitely not leaving my possession, it's a beauty, love my PO! Best of luck with yours and enjoy it.
Great video, man. I like the PO more than the Seamaster 300. Loved the backstory on you chasing this watch. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the watch simply covered in bubble wrap.
Looks good, and I enjoyed the video, especially your comments about your Wife! I don't have a youtube channel myself, but your comments struck a cord! I recently picked up a 1972 Seiko 6139-8020, with a vertical clutch column wheel movement. I was wearing it a few days later when my Wife noticed and and asked if it was new. I told her yes, but that it was cheap. What she didn't know is that the few dollars that came out of our checking account was only a small portion of what I actually paid, the rest coming out of my PayPal account! ;) Cool watch, enjoy the heck out of it and don't worry about the AR coating. You can always replace the crystal. ps. your daughter is a cuties, my kids know Dad is a watch nut too.
Hahahaha you’ve created a new watch and clothing passion in your daughter…😂 Good luck keeping that under control! Great looking watch. Actually, the Omega double sided AR coating can be a little frustrating. It’s gorgeous when new, and not so gorgeous after years of wear. There are affordable options to replace the crystal with undercoated only, but your watch has no Box / Papers anyways, so why would it mater? And Omega will replace with the real deal, but it’s not cheap. Personally, I’d make this my daily beater and just use the heck out of it. I hope you’re still enjoying the watch. I just purchased my first 600M. And my 300M is 23 years old and still runs like new! You cannot go wrong with the Seamaster lineup. They just work! Happy Holidays. I enjoyed the video.
Really appreciate your channel and your enthusiastic approach to a variety of gear....I'm always waiting for a new video from you. Keep up the great work as your life allows. Thanks!
"Grey market" just means that the items are not sales officially sanctioned by the manufacturer. Creation Watches of Singapore is a good example. I buy a lot from them with no tax to pay.
I know I don’t think he knows about the grey market . Even if you buy a watch off the grey market , It should still have a legitimate serial number. I think he thought Grey market is fake . I’m sure it was an accidental mistake.
I want to put a Planet Ocean bracelet on my Speedmaster. Do you have a Speedmaster? Can you test this out for me? I wonder if the spring bars will line up with the holes.
Hell you lucked out in tariff taxes ! UPS asked me how many jewels it had and was charged per jewel within the watch! Trust me you got away clean!!! I have the same complication but bigger diameter watch. Love my omega seamaster planet ocean.
Beautiful piece one of my faves! Well done & many, many thanks for giving us a real behind the scenes look into this purchase. I currently own an 20’ Seamaster 300 42’mm co to axial master chronometer, but I want to add the Planet Ocean to the mix very soon!!
Shocking at how it was packed. It should've been wrapped tightly in between the bubble wrap! Anyway, I love that Planet Ocean 2201.50. Such a classic piece now. Its better than the current ones and not as thick. I'd love to add it to my collection one day. Bond watch in Quantum of Solace by the way.
I personally can't stand external AR coatings. I have a couple sinn watches with double AR coatings and when I got them serviced I got them to replace the Crystal with just AR coating on the underside. Doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me in reflectivity.
Wish I could have chimed in sooner. You have Customs tape all over the box which means it was examined by US Customs. So they took the watch out and then returned it like you found it. Closer is a great seller and have been buying from him for years.
Nice to finally get a watch you have been looking at for so long. I think you did ok. I would have saved up and got one in the US with box and papers but I understand where you are coming from. How often do we look at the box and papers after the unboxing anyways... haha enjoy it and I hope the coaxial movement is a step up from the standard lever escapement movements for you. George Daniels tried to go to Patek with this escapement and Omega was the one who finally committed. Great history and classic style.
I am living in Massachusetts. Thinking buy watch from Japan too. I always worry import duty fee. So the duty fee only $120 ??? Do u mind tell me what state u live ???? I wanna how how much I need pay for duty fee
I have Closer (the store it looks like you purchased from) saved on my ebay. They sell a lot of interesting watches for sale. Great review. I have bought many on ebay and have had a great experience every time
Something I particularly adore about 2201.50.00 is that no matter how spectacular "No Time No Die" may be, this watch is forever associated in my mind with Daniel Craig heydays!!! Quantum of Solace may be a mediocre film for some, but for me is the Casino Royale's sequel in many ways. In many ways as well the 2201.50.00 marks the beginning of a new era, leaving behind the Brosnan watches that dominated the franchise from 1995 until 2006!
Don't doubt your decisions. Be confident that you did the right thing. You got a nice watch - one that you wanted. It keeps good time and is in reasonably nice shape considering the age. And on top of all that, you got a very good deal on a watch you've wanted for 10 years.
Great video Andrew. I haven't been following you for awhile but when this came up I went right to it. Congrats on your new watch purchase, even with the mix-ups and all. From my research I have heard that a lot of people who buy from Japan have commented that the item was usually better than described, but who knows right. I hope you didn't get rid of your Hamilton Khaki mechanical. Thanks, Brian.
For me, I want to buy from a CONUS seller for any high-value purchase and from a well-vetted seller (I will do a lot of background research on the seller). I will take my time and ask a ton of questions (which will give me a better sense of what to expect and a better sense of the seller). I will also try to acquire the full kit (box, warranty card, manual). Another good characteristic I seek out for a seller is if he or she is also a watch collector. I typically can tell from the language he/she uses in their descriptions or in our back and forth email conversations. Typically, watch enthusiasts tend to be more honest, fair and helpful in their communications and they tend to display a low number of transactions (e.g. on eBay). If I am buying on a watch forum, e.g. Watchuseek, I will look at their length of time on the forum, the number of postings they have made and search for their prior sales activities.
I love the Planet Ocean, think you made a good choice. The Seamaster 300 is soooo dated in the worst way possible but the PO is timeless and beautiful, well done. Hoping to pick one up this year, but waffling between 39.5 and 42.
I really like your videos, you have a very easy way about you, down to earth. My questions whenever buying a luxury watch, particularly when buying from a private seller. Are there any marks, dings, dents, scratches, or damage at all anywhere on the case, bracelet, crystal, clasp or back? Has it been dropped or abused in any way? Does it come with all original boxes and paperwork? Has it been opened up by anyone outside of the manufacturer, and has it been serviced? I ask for good closeup photos, I want to know precisely what I will be getting when I purchase it, and if it not exactly as described, I reach out. Almost 20 years of buying watches, knock wood, everything has been pretty smooth as a result. I've also built great relationships with domestic jewelers who sell preowned and typically haggle to almost private similar pricing. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to future reviews.
Beautiful watch, excellent video clip, keep them coming man!! Looking forward to your comparison of the Planet Ocean with other watches you had experience with, that would be even more beneficial. As far as your purchase is concerned, the world belongs to the brave, so you took a measured risk and it paid off, glad that worked out for you! And you should get your daughter to color that drawing, at least one side of it, and you should frame it -- she put a lot of work into it, and I guarantee you that in ten years or so, that picture is going to melt your heart everytime you look at it. I wished I saved and framed some of my sons' drawings when they were that young, but those were rough times for me and I did not have the inspiration or the time to do it. Children are precious, and we should celebrate our children because parents are the only ones that can do that, nobody else really knows what goes on in the family, so if the parent does not do it, nobody will. Cheers, looking forward to more vids from you!
Were the customs forms filled out as "used" watch? Sounds like you paid the full customs duty for a new item. I just bought a new German watch that was just under $1000, and got a bill from Fedex for $23.40, which includes the duty AND the Fedex brokerage fee.
Just watched a video of buying a similar Omega from the black market fake watch stores with even a copy of the correct movement and weight, he got them down to $200.
After 13 years I did strip my crown and payed 75 dollars to replace it. I got it for 2200 new on a rubber strap.back in 2005. I now have the metal and two Omega NATO straps that I highly recommend them. Enjoy!
I bought a $2800 watch from Japan in September 2018 and no customs duty was charged so I think they started charging for items over $800 in 2019 or 2020.
By the way think it expires tomm on Ebay but it has to be over 2k on luxury goods there is a 10% off that expires tomm. So i pulled the trigger, got the orange dialed version from japan for 2,400 shipped. Hope i dont get taxed but I’m prepared for it based on your experience
I’ve paid import fees on a couple of watches I’ve purchased; I’m not sure if the base limit but on the 2, one Christopher Ward and one Yema, I paid it. Good luck with the watch, it is a nice looking piece.
Nice watch Andrew! I have the same one and had the same issue with the external AR. If it bothers you like it did me, a few minutes with a little cape cod cloth will remove the external AR with minimal effect on reflections. Hope you are enjoying it!
Hi I have also thought about buying a plant ocean from eBay, but it's a scary place. This year I bought a citizen pro diver and is immaculate on a rubber strap. Thank you for your review merry Christmas 🎄 John UK England
I think you did ok notwithstanding the horrible effortless boxing. Time will tell. I bought a Seamaster Cal 1109 (ETA2892-A2) on eBay and had it serviced by Swatch and it runs like a charm.
You did not expect to pay import fee? That's one of the reasons why I don't buy watches from outside Europe. Here in the Netherlands we have to pay 21% import fee.
Depends on what you want to do. Keep it use it and enjoy. You did good, if you foresee selling it the few hundred you save it not worth going through a dealer an d top watch with all the packaging. Ps you should always ask the seller to show what’s included. As far as packing customs had to open it who knows how they repacked it
I purchased a Tudor BB36 from that same Japanese watch seller. Came in the original box. It was only a few months since the original purchase date as well. It was in perfect condition too. The biggest thing you have to worry about with Japanese sellers is the case might be polished.
Great point and something that US dealers need to improve...good exposed and detailed pictures that the Japanese sellers create. Thanks for the content!
How do you avoid getting a Franken watch or a counterfeit? This is a serious question. I admittedly have even seen counterfeit casios. I have no confidence buying luxury, frequently counterfeited pieces second hand.
Thanks for the insight I have been in the same predicament as you and have also seen an orange omega planet ocean and on the fence to order from ebay or chrono24 all the cheap watches are from Japan.
You got lucky because it looks and runs great! As much homework as you did ... you did not do enough. Import duties will add to the cost when your purchase exceeds any applicable exemption. Wait till you do a service on that Omega ... start saving. I looked at Ebay and it seems the prices have gone up. I can't believe the seller would not secure the watch in the bubble wrap which makes me think Customs opened it and did not repack it securely. Enjoy that watch.
Bought from the same dealer. Had an excellent experience. It's said on his page that he's not responsible for all taxes and custom fees. So I believe you can't blame him for this. The package situation is strange though. My watch was really good packed. I believe it's possible it was checked by custom officials and then repacked. I also believe that you can't have 100% rating if you have thousands of reviews (not hundreds). There is always some issue, usually post relate. I think 99.3% is still very good. Basically it means that only 1 person per 200 is unhappy.
What is smart, you’ve got what you’ve paid for. If you want to re-sell you will get the same in return. No papers, no original box and scratches on the coating plus bad wrapping and probably an early one. It’s a matter of personal choice and risk. Nevertheless, enjoy your watch.
I was given this watch for my 50 birthday in 2007 brand new. Wear it every day and have travelled all over the world with it. Would never get rid of it.
Has it needed service since then or does it still run fine?
@@squalematic it’s had one official Omega Service 6 years ago. The watch runs perfectly.
I have a 45mm orange 🍊 bezel PO and have had it for probably 15 years. Zero issue with it other than the bezel fading
Hoovie’s Garage of watches?
One of the best watches ever, imo.
It seems like it was unboxed by customs. Probably was in better packaging before they opened up the box to assess import duties.
Agreed, the box seems as it was opened by customs, and it probably is why the import fees were imposed
This is Great (!) Original Content, excellent stuff TY
I have always wanted this watch, but with the orange accents. I will now have to follow in your footsteps and search for one.
Happy hunting!
Bought my Omega speedmaster on Ebay as well from a dealer in Japan. Watch was in great condition exactly like the photos. Actually was a great experience.
what is the name of the dealer?
It's a gamble if customs will open your package and sloppily throw it back in, scratching your crystal in the process. No repercussions whatsoever
The part about your wife made me laugh. Mine is always texting me with a picture of a package saying, "Did you buy another watch?" lol
Jared Wagner - Yup, mine too. I try to schedule my deliveries for while she’s at work or out of town. I hide them all in my safe, but surprisingly, she never even looks at what watch I’m wearing!
Glad I’m not only one that get watch “itch” every couple of years then...I don’t wanna see a doctor neither!!

Did customs open it to check the contents?
They could be responsible for bad packaging.
Yes, this has happened to me.
Yeah it's covered in "Examined by US Customs & Border Protection" tape. You can't be sure whether it was badly packed in Japan or just dumped back in the box after inspection. I know where I'd put my money.
My thoughts too

$120 for import is not bad at all. Great classic piece. Don't worry about the ar scratches.
Great video. I like that you are real and down to earth kind of guy. Nothing like that urban snob guy, lol. I love the watch and Omegas in general. Your daughter is marvelous. Keep up the good work. I'm a new subscriber now.

Thinking of selling my IWC 3777 Pilot Chronograph (Le Petit Prince blue dial) in order to buy the new Planet Ocean 8500. On the fence about it.
Tough choice, they would look great side by side though 😉
This first gen is my favorite of the Planet Oceans. I have the larger 45mm one, but the balance is perfect for my wrist.
I didn't get the comment about serial numbers and gray market. Gray market are not fake watches.

I like it. The Planet Ocean is on my unicorn list. I like the new ones but you might be convincing me in getting a more vintage one like that.
There are merits to both, but the original is just the perfect proportions
Shocking at how it was packed. It should've been wrapped tightly in between the bubble wrap!
Anyway, I love that Planet Ocean 2201.50. Such a classic piece now. Its better than the current ones and not as thick. I'd love to add it to my collection one day.
Bond watch in Quantum of Solace by the way.
Oh man. Try getting it for that much now
I bought a Seamaster GMT from the same dealer - no problems at all and great watch.
I personally can't stand external AR coatings. I have a couple sinn watches with double AR coatings and when I got them serviced I got them to replace the Crystal with just AR coating on the underside. Doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me in reflectivity.

$2000 for a great diver, no less a PO from Omega, yeah you did well

The 2500 PO is preferable in many ways to the modern day 8900 hockey puck PO.

120$?? Lucky you! If you import from Japan to Europe, you have to add extra 23-25% of the price. I got basically robbed buying my Casio Oceanus.
Cool watch. I kinda want the black and orange....
I own this same watch. Saw Daniel Craig wearimg it in Casino Royal. Had to have it. To this day my ball time favorite watch. Enjoy.

That’s the model Omega Planet Ocean James Bond wore in Quantum Of Solace (2008).
Don’t forget bond also wore it in casino Royale;)
Thats weird about the import duties... the customs website (HS Code 9102.19.2000) says import duties arent due for watches.
That's not true.

That model (2500) pre ceramic must be the thinnest 600m diver ever made, I have the 45.5mm and you should invest in the black rubber strap
I hear good things about the rubber strap, as well as the Omega NATOs
nice watch and decent deal japan is so good at polishing whatever they do
You almost have 55.5k subs!
Your edit: Grey market watch? What's the problem?
Great vid, hope you enjoy the watch. The orange bezel version was one of the first luxury watches to catch my attention. I hope to add one one day!
Yes I've heard that works, thanks for your comment!
i hate ext.ar coating but didn't know you can get rid of it.
thanks for the tip
Ar acronym meaning please?
Hi
I have also thought about buying a plant ocean from eBay, but it's a scary place. This year I bought a citizen pro diver and is immaculate on a rubber strap.
Thank you for your review merry Christmas 🎄

I think you did ok notwithstanding the horrible effortless boxing. Time will tell. I bought a Seamaster Cal 1109 (ETA2892-A2) on eBay and had it serviced by Swatch and it runs like a charm.
This will be my next watch and my first omega, unless Rolex can shrink the explorer ii in September
That AR coating is really blue. Are you sure it is legit? I have a SM300 and the AR coating is nowhere near that blue.
Early versions of Omega's AR was blue tinted. You must have a more recent model. It's clear now.
Can you film the video comparing it to your Tudor and Rolex?
You did not expect to pay import fee? That's one of the reasons why I don't buy watches from outside Europe. Here in the Netherlands we have to pay 21% import fee.
A good reason to make a trip to Japan. I hear the cherry blossoms are lovely too.
@@irreview good idea
21 procent plus extra costum fees.
@prep7 yes i heard him saying that but the thing with custom duties is that' s like a lottery sometimes
Hi same in UK 20 % + Custom duty Tax plus Royal Mail handling charges
have you taken the back off yet to even see if it has the right movement in it?
Enjoy your watch! Great buy imho!
I bought my SMP 2254.50 from that same dealer. I had a great experience with them. I did not pay any import fees on mine. Weird that you did.
Thanks for commenting!
How do you avoid getting a Franken watch or a counterfeit? This is a serious question. I admittedly have even seen counterfeit casios. I have no confidence buying luxury, frequently counterfeited pieces second hand.
Simple...know what you're doing. Buy the seller, not the watch.
i love the concept of this video. Sounds like you got lucky.
Thanks!
I purchase an Omega Cal 711 from closer924 from Japan I was very satisfy. Enjoy your watch great buy
ar coating scratches and gets marked very easily so thats not really a big issue in my opinion, looks like a really good deal
Anything above $2000 you will probably have to pay those import fees, perfectly normal and expected.
I live in uk and recently bought a watch dial from chicago and had to pay $18 custom charge for a $34 dial . Never had to pay custom charges before .
@@johnl798 Yeah, I've heard import fees between US-UK are even worse than Asia-USA.
You got a great deal... I’ve seen that dealer many times on eBay, he seems to have a ton of inventory
which dealer is that?
Those fees aren’t too bad. I ordered a $30 t-shirt from the USA to the UK just before Christmas and had to pay £15 (just under $20) in fees.
What is smart, you’ve got what you’ve paid for. If you want to re-sell you will get the same in return. No papers, no original box and scratches on the coating plus bad wrapping and probably an early one. It’s a matter of personal choice and risk. Nevertheless, enjoy your watch.
I do think I got what I paid for, that's a good point. Cheers, Andrew
8:20 its your luck as customs doesnt always charge it. $120 is not much, I have paid hundreds of $$$ in customs tax for a single watch before...
