Thanks Doug. I've never been a huge D.T. fan. I've got a couple of their CD's that get played once or twice a year. I have to say though that on the strength of the two tracks they have released from this album, I'm looking forward to the release and purchase of this one.

It annoys me when people make lame excuses for that though and just push hate. I mean do I expect a band comfortable in their for almost 40 years to really change with the old (new) drummer coming back? No I don’t and that view point I have effects how I view any new output from them. Do I think this is game changing? No, but it’s slightly better than Night Terror and reminds me of old DT with MP’s style and songwriting mixed in.
@ I’m not a new fan. I also know how to play most DT songs on the guitar. I didn’t learn that overnight. I know most of their repertoire down to the actual details. The last two songs seriously suck compared to the stuff they should be capable of doing. These two singles are the equivalent of only playing the pentatonic scale, but in metal form. Except for a few moments in the instrumental sections
I really like the callback to Sacrificed Sons in the beginning of the solo section. Shows a bit of 'conceptual continuity' as Frank Zappa would put it. 7:33 - 8:00

Funny. We just did a music club on this on Doug's community discord. Mike Mills amazing vocalist and definitely does not lack an imagination. Very eclectic piece of music ranging from Acapella vocals to heavy riffs, and Rush style passages and 2112 story telling. It was a fun listen.
The other song you couldn’t remember is The Enemy Inside and that was a definitely a banger!!! This is kinda like a part 2 in a way. Great song - A Broken Man 👍👍👍

They have a video that has interviews with military personnel who suffer from PTSD before the song starts. The video also tells a story of what one family goes through. It’s a typical DT song with MP back in the band which if you’ve been a fan for a long time then you are used to the formula and won’t mind it but new kids or MM era people may find issue with it but to each their own. They don’t have to nor should they reinvent themselves after 40 years and every drummer has their own style. People comparing MP to MM when they have two different style and approaches to drumming are childish and looking to whine since things are different for them now.

Here is a recommendation for Metal Monday or your personal curiosity, that probably has not been suggested at all ever, if barely, Therion! It is really strange recommending Therion because every single album is a world apart from the last, once they sing in french, the other it is very choir heavy, the other is more gothic metal, i hardly can find which one to recommend for you but i will at least give you some title, try (1- The rise of sodom and gomorrah | 2- To mega Therion | 3- Lemuria). Therion adjusted its musical style by adding orchestral elements, including choirs, classical musicians, and even a full orchestra at their concert performances. Christofer Johnsson really wanted to make metal music with a classical foundation with a choir and he made it happen! Also, of course they are swedish.

Long time fan of Dream Theater but I just really am not feeling this or Night Terror. Seems derivative of their own material, and not in a prog self-referential type way just retreading the same ground for the sake of safety. Bands are by no means obligated to push their own boundaries but in the realm of prog especially I feel like it's almost a betrayal to be around so long and not at least make an attempt to do so. Also bothers me that Jordan is so obsessed with AI that it's clearly infiltrated their creative process. So many points in the video are so obviously procedurally generated that it feels like a slap in the face. Anyway, I can at least still be happy that others find enjoyment in it because it's clearly still music with complexity in a world of oversimplification, and if the band itself feels fulfilled playing it then power to them.
The lyrics are awesome but the song, overall, it's just AI Dream Theater, just like the last album.... Distance Over Time was their last great album and they're refusing to experiment after the amazing Astonishing. It's not about Portnoy vs Mangini. They're not pushing themselves anymore.
I'm a 39-year DT fan and in recent years I've developed a bad taste for JL. His studio voice is fine [NOT GREAT] but fine, however, his live voice leaves a whole lot to be desired! I don't understand how the 4 remaining members don't hear this and I do!

Long time fan of Dream Theater but I just really am not feeling this or Night Terror. Seems derivative of their own material, and not in a prog self-referential type way just retreading the same ground for the sake of safety. Bands are by no means obligated to push their own boundaries but in the realm of prog especially I feel like it's almost a betrayal to be around so long and not at least make an attempt to do so. Also bothers me that Jordan is so obsessed with AI that it's clearly infiltrated their creative process. So many points in the video are so obviously procedurally generated that it feels like a slap in the face. Anyway, I can at least still be happy that others find enjoyment in it because it's clearly still music with complexity in a world of oversimplification, and if the band itself feels fulfilled playing it then power to them.
The lyrics are awesome but the song, overall, it's just AI Dream Theater, just like the last album.... Distance Over Time was their last great album and they're refusing to experiment after the amazing Astonishing. It's not about Portnoy vs Mangini. They're not pushing themselves anymore.

I'm a 39-year DT fan and in recent years I've developed a bad taste for JL. His studio voice is fine [NOT GREAT] but fine, however, his live voice leaves a whole lot to be desired! I don't understand how the 4 remaining members don't hear this and I do!
