  • Above Professor Christopher Baswell’s desk, there’s an etching of the Canterbury Pilgrims from 1888.
“It’s charming and it’s really nicely detailed, but it also reflects the celebratory of traditional English life where everything was happy and settled,” said Baswell. “A very false story, right?”
As Ann Whitney Olin Professor of English at Barnard College and Columbia University, one of Baswell’s primary focuses of research is medieval literature and manuscript studies.
This etching is a lovely “reminder of what I study in my office,” Baswell said.
