Cerro Catedral: 5 Reasons to Ski or Snowboard Bariloche (Insta360 OneX)

  • Why should you ski or snowboard at Cerro Catedral in Patagonia? Well, we can offer 5 Reasons!
    But first, Cerro Catedral is the largest ski and snowboard resort in South America. There are accommodations, restaurants and shops at the base of the mountain. The city of Bariloche, twenty minutes away by car, is full of hotels, hostels, restaurants and shops. We were lucky to have snow at the base of the mountain. We learned that this is not usually the case, and for much of the ski season during the past ten years, skiers and snowboarders have had to take the chairlift up the mountain to the snow line.
    Unfortunately, this year (2020), although Cerro Catedral has had snow at the base of the mountain for the whole season, few people have been able to enjoy it due to COVID-19. We hope everything will be back to normal next year.
    REASON # 1: THE SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING.
    Cerro Catedral is in the Andes, so the terrain is incredible. You can ski or snowboard above the tree-line or below it. Whether you are a beginner or expert, you can find suitable slopes.
    REASON # 2: BURTON CATEDRAL.
    We bought clothing at what may be the coolest ski /snowboard store ever - Burton Catedral. We liked everything in the store. In a normal store, there is usually a lot of clothing that you do not like. For us, that was not the case at Burton Catedral! The name of the owner is Herbert, and we think everything that he has chosen to sell in the store is great. He is also energetic and very friendly. Best ski / snowboard store anywhere!
    REASON # 3: THE EMPANADAS.
    Our favorite empanadas in Argentina were from Cerro Catedral. Specifically, the empanadas at Punta Princesa, which is on the mountain. Our ranking of empanadas during our trip to Argentina is below:
    Best Overall Empanada: Punta Princesa, on the mountain at Cerro Catedral. These were chicken empanadas.
    Beef Empanada Rankings:
    1) Minga - Palermo, Buenos Aires. Perfect, in our view. Well-seasoned, and juicy. We ate multiple orders even though we were not that hungry.
    2) Nonino Empanadas - San Martin de los Andes. This sit-down restaurant had the best variety of empanadas that we saw, though we did not like chicken empanada at all.
    3) Don Julio - Palermo, Buenos Aires. These empanadas were delicious and contained sauce, which we did not see among the other empanadas that we tried.
    4) Galeria Del Sol (ground floor) - Bariloche. Unfortunately, we do not remember the name of the vendor in the food court, but the empanadas were fresh and very tasty. The best we found in the town of Bariloche.
    5) Las 10 Empanadas - Bariloche. These seemed promising, as they only make empanadas, but the empanadas did not have as much flavor as we would have liked. They were also a but dry.
    6) El Filo Cafe-Bar - Cerro Cetedral, base of the mountain food court/shopping mall. These empanadas tasted like plain ground beef in a bread blanket. Looked like it too.
    REASON # 4: THE VIEWS.
    We found the views at Cerro Catedral difficult to beat. Everywhere we looked, we saw lakes or dramatic, jagged snow covered mountains. Add clouds and the sunset, and each day was unique.
    REASON # 5: FRIENDLY ARGENTINIANS.
    In our experience, we found the Argentinians we met to be extremely friendly and warm. Whether we were on a chairlift, in a restaurant, or in a store, the people were absolutely charming. And the same is true of the Brazilians - there were many Brazilians at Catedral!

    Thank you so much for this review. I’m an argentinian who is living in Miami now, and every time anybody asks me where to go in Argentina I always say Bariloche. For me that place is almost magical.

      I agree! I think Bariloche may be the most beautiful resort I've been to. Some of the views of the lakes and jagged mountains when the sun was low and the light was disbursed by light cloud cover, I'll never forget it.

    Nice bro, I’m Brazilian and my only snowboarding experience ever was on Tremblant, now I’m looking for places nearby my country to do it again in 2021, it’s great to know that Cerro Catedral is almost 2 times larger than Tremblant because I was afraid to not have a great ski experience like I did in North America

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks! There were many Brazilians in Bariloche when we were at Cerro Catedral, so you may feel right at home! Tremblant is a great mountain with an incredible village, but you will definitely find Cerro Catedral to be much larger. The only potential issue is that over the past 10-15 years, Catedral has apparently not had much snow, so the bottom is often not open, and you have to take the chairlift or tram higher up the mountain to where the snow is. Fortunately, they had plenty of snow when we were there last year. The bottom was fully open. And the same thing appeared to be true this year. Glad you want to head back onto the snow!

      If I didn't care about expense or timing, I'd go back to Catedral since I was at Valle Nevado last year. Catedral is bigger and I like the views better. But they both need more snow right now. There's plenty of time until mid-August, so you'll hopefully be fine with either!

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  2 роки тому +1

      The drive is pretty easy. About 25 minutes. The road was well-plowed when we got there, which was a couple days after a major storm, so no issues there. It looks like they're having a good amount of snow this year, so you're going at a perfect time!

      @@oakland439 Rental shops in Bariloche were pretty busy in the evening, and shops at the base were predictably busy in the morning, though there didn't seem to be an overly long wait time. Didn't compare prices, but stopped at a rental shop just outside the resort on the main drive in, which wasn't crowded at all, and they spoke English.
      It was hit or miss as far as English. The lift ticket sales person we dealt with only spoke Spanish. Same with a few sales people in stores. But many spoke English, and either way, everyone was very friendly, so you should be able to manage. Maybe just prepare for Spanish only in key situations like buying lift tickets, etc.

      We purchased lift tickets at the base of the mountain. It didn't seem like there was a better deal by buying them online in advance. And we found a hotel just by going through a regular booking website. We didn't check Airbnb or VRBO, but maybe we should have. Would definitely do that now to compare. Particularly because we had a car. We were aware of buses from Bariloche but didn't take them since we had a car. But the routes may be available on line. If you go, I hope you get great snow!

      Thanks! We live in New York, where it is already pretty expensive. Don't remember Bariloche being more expensive than New York. At worst, maybe about the same? But the exchange rate was also favorable. Definitely at Don Julio in Buenos Aires, the filet mignon was about twice the size as you would get in New York for half the price! But clothing in Buenos Aires may have been about the same. Burton Catedral seemed to be about the same prices as the U.S.

    How is getting there from NYC? I am thinking of planning a trip this July.

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  2 роки тому +1

      So jealous! Quickest is direct from NYC on either American or Aerolineas Argentinas (11 hours overnight with early morning arrival). Buenos Aires has two airports. One for international flights (EZE) and one for domestic (AEP). Unfortunately, post COVID, the few flights there were from EZE to Bariloche (BRC) are now gone. So you will have to transfer from EZE to AEP for the flight to Bariloche. It may make sense to check out Buenos Aires for a day if you haven't been, and fly to BRC from AEP the next day. AEP borders downtown Buenos Aires, so you will be driving through the city to get there from EZE anyway. It's a 2-3 hour flight to BRC from AEP. Once at BRC, the town of Bariloche is only about 20 min away and Cerro Catedral is about 45 min (20 min from Bariloche). The people there are awesome!

      We had steak at our hotel - Hotel Casco - and it was delicious. Outside of that, we only had beef in empandas at the resorts, as far as I recall. A local told us that the government retains the best quality meat for the Buenos Aires region. So according to him, the steaks may not be as good in the rest of Argentina. That wasn't true for our hotel in Bariloche, but it was certainly true that the meat in Buenos Aires was top quality. Don Julio steakhouse was one of the best based on quality and value.

      I stayed in one of the cheapest hostels in Bariloche and took a taxi up each day and a bus down. Taxi fare was around $15 and you can ask the hotel/hostel to order it for you, and was twice faster than the bus. I think Bariloche is a great place to stay as you can enjoy great sunset views by the lake after skiing (I was there in mid-September so days were longer), visit the chocolate stores and there is a grill (Alto El Fuego Parrilla) which is super good.
