I've got the early version, too. Very sharp lens.
I also have the Sigma art 24-105, which I fancy is very slightly better. But it's close.
Trouble is the Sigmas a LOT heavier to carry about.

I watched another review that covered one important aspect your review didn't pick up. The noise of stabilization. The original mk 1 is definitely noisey with stabilization on, this is a problem for video guys and gals with sound on. The new version is silent. My takeaway is that is the deal breaker if you are going to use this lens a lot for videos, if not everything else you said about both being very similar is true. And it is true that if you are primarily a stills person, I am, then the original is great, especially for the price. In the video you also mentioned that these lenses were "prime," I'm assuming you are meaning L quality. But prime in photographic language as you well know doesn't mean L quality. But I did get the mk 2 version should I shoot more video sometime.

I bough the Mark 2 and the lens has a very noticeably loose front barrel when it's extended to 105mm / zoomed-in. Is that normal? It rattles when you shake it. I used to have the Mark 1 and I don't remember this being the case with the old version.

Just bought the OG 24-105 f4 from a nice Lady in Schwanheim for 250€s. With an absent Red Ring. (Being my first L, I kinda thought it was just a sticker / painted on.)
Other than that the Lens is 100% one of the first Shots I took at the darkest part of the blue hour of an on coming Straßenbahn 16 -> Offenbach was probably one of the best Fotos I've yet taken. It was taken at iso 3200 on a 5D mkII, and has some noise in the street, ant the nose ofvthe Tram, but its was not as distracting as i thought. The joke is knowing that the Lens fairs poorly in low light I wasn't expexting anything. So I just took it freehand, and to my surprise the image came out really sharp. The only ghosting / blur is visible on the Schaumainkai Streetsign. Its a bit ghosted, but zoomed in perfectly legable. Like I said this was like 5 maximum 10 minutes before nightfall.
I think I love this lens, and for 250€, when eveyone and their Dog wants 400€ for it, this was a no brainer.

Congratulations on your new purchase! It sounds like you got a great deal on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L lens. Despite the missing red ring, it's still a fantastic lens known for its versatility and image quality.
It's impressive to hear that you were able to capture such a sharp and clear shot in challenging low-light conditions with your Canon 5D Mark II. The fact that the image came out well despite the lens's reputation for being less suited to low-light situations speaks to your skill as a photographer and the capabilities of the camera.
Getting such a great shot so quickly after acquiring the lens must be exciting and reaffirming of your decision to purchase it. It sounds like you're already enjoying the lens and getting some excellent results with it.
Enjoy exploring the capabilities of your new lens further, and may it continue to inspire you to capture many more stunning images!

Daniel, I've noticed that the new lens bulges or bubbles out slightly on the front of the lens. Is it safe to use a filter without it coming in contact with the lens? It looks like it would be very close or even possibly rub against it.

Hey Daniel, great video.

      Daniel

Thank you for this video! How does the zoom lens tube behave on the MK II after the two years? Does it also slide in and out on its own, like on the MK I? Recently, I bought a used MK I lens, in which the tube should not be so worn out-unfortunately it wasn't true (here is a video after receiving the lens: ua-cam.com/video/jZd1pCb9ah4/v-deo.html ). That is a problem for me since I do not shoot/film horizontally that often. Is the zoom mechanism better on MK II? Is the lock/switch only for 24 mm or perhaps also for every other position between 24 mm and 105 mm?

    • @Food-is_Life
      @Food-is_Life Рік тому

No the mark 2 has a lock that locks the zoom from creeping. The mark 1 had this problem for the ones that were abused and used.

Both lenses are great for sensors up till 30mpx. For sensors with higher resolution better to have 24-70 ii of rf (for using with mirror less). Anyway, all lenses issued before 2012 will not show all advantages of new canon R5. So with sensors with 30 mpx and lower - good choice.

I don't have the ability to take or display photos, but I can provide you with some information on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and its Mark II version.
The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is a versatile lens known for its wide focal range and image stabilization. The Mark II version, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM, is an updated model with improved optics and construction.
Here are some key differences between the two:
      1. **Optical Quality:** The Mark II version is designed with improved optics to deliver better image quality, reduced distortion, and improved sharpness, particularly at the edges of the frame.
      2. **Construction:** The Mark II version features a more robust construction with additional weather sealing, making it more durable and resistant to environmental elements.
      3. **Image Stabilization:** Both lenses come with image stabilization, but the Mark II version may have some improvements in this area for enhanced stability.
      4. **Price:** Generally, the Mark II version is more expensive than the original version due to the improvements in optical quality and construction.
When choosing between the two, consider your specific needs and budget. If optical quality and durability are crucial factors for you, the Mark II version might be worth the additional cost. If you are on a budget and the original version meets your requirements, it can still be a good choice.
For a detailed and hands-on comparison, you might want to refer to photography websites, forums, or reviews where photographers share their experiences and sometimes provide image samples taken with both lenses.

Nice comparison video ! What do you think about the Sigma 24-104mm f/4 ART ? It is the go-to lens of Tony Northrup as well. He says it is Sharper & Brighter (T-stop, Transmission) than Canon's Mark I & II both. Should a Canon loyalist go for a 3rd party over OEM lens ? Do you trust Sigma's Quality Control ? Sigma is plagued with AF issues. I have 6D + 24-70mm f/4 L IS + 70-300 II Nano-USM + 40 STM and will now buy the 85mm f/1.4 IS L when it will be out in november.

Sigma discontinue their lenses constantly and they stop making spare parts so repairs will not be an option. There quality and workmanship in their products are inferior to name brand. I don't recommend any after market products.
