      I wasn't positive whether or not this cat had a home. He wasn't neutered, he had fleas, but he was pretty friendly with people. #1) I didn't want to take him away from a family IF he did have a home, #2) it was Thanksgiving long weekend.
      There was only so much I could do with the time I had there.

    just to clarify for those that had the same question as i did. fleas do not turn into tapeworms directly. they are an intermediate host for tapeworms, thus when ingested the tapeworm eggs inside the fleas can proliferate

      I had no idea. I'm a wildlife rehabilitator. It clicked because a similar thing occurs when a wild bird, for example a robin, eats earthworms. The earthworm may host syngamus worms inside it (we nickname them gapeworms). When the bird swallows the earthworm, the syngamus worm works its way back up the throat and then down into the respiratory system, where it reproduces until they impair breathing, and the secondary infections they can cause, kill the bird. It's easy to treat. You've humbled me, Vanessa. This is exciting, to learn something new! :)

One went from a feral cat suffering from a puncture wound in his shoulder and getting super thin (because he was unable to hunt) to being so sweet, allowing me to put medication on his wound and feed him until he's now nice and chunky for the winter.

      I had no idea either despite years volunteering at a shelter.
      The way the channel put it, "When fleas are ingested they turn into tape worms..." is incorrect and I was surprised that they put that out, but I googled it and old CDC diagrams are mislabeled with that exact wording. Newer diagrams have the correct wording that adult fleas harbor tape worm cysticercoids, which are one of the intermediate life stages between a tape worm eggs and adult tape worms.

    • @acustomer7216
      @acustomer7216 Рік тому +7

      Yes , those cysticercoids look like grains of rice. Sometime you can see them on kitty's butt fur. Vet check up will catch it with a stool sample

    • @bjones2194
      @bjones2194 Рік тому

      Tapeworms are parasites.. they do not share a symbiotic life with ANY pet(or human).
      Edit: Wanting to add just in case that symbiotic means beneficial to both parties or organisms. Like sharks and the little sucker fish that follow them around. Parasites, like fleas, ticks, lice, tapeworms, etc, need a host organism for their own gain and survival. Tapeworms can literally kill their hosts, humans and animals alike.

      I'm not sure about Florida, but lots of rural areas are facing a crisis right now because shelters are overflowing with cats and dogs. One nearby shelter went into Code Red status multiple times last year and once so far this year. Code Red means if they don't start adopting or finding foster homes soon the they'll have to start euthanizing again. And I'm not 100% sure, but I think I remember reading that the shelter will not take in new animals right away if they are in Code Red status.
      The shelter said the biggest issue is a lack of low-cost spay/neuter clinics in the area. Luckily, the county is in the process of getting one built now. However, even if you can afford to take your pet to the vet, many vets are so booked up it can take months to get one animal spayed/neutered. So hopefully the clinic will help.

    Sweet Cat! Wish you could find a home for him. Outdoor cats have it too hard and live short life's. Thank you for helping him! You are a doll!

    I was just in Florida , and had a friendly neighbor cat come and visit me every day. She had one or more ticks on her , and I just didn’t know what to do … I wish I had your skill set, I would have loved to help her out as you helped this kitty. I know the neighbor behind my B&B “owns” her (she clearly adopted him , the way he tells it)… that gent isn’t equipped to help her out by taking her to a groomer or vet . My mother came over and applied some flea/tick spray to the area we were sure of, and that was the best I could do. You’re such a saint with these fur babies !

    1:03 The "Send help" face he's giving got a good laugh out of me. Glad to see Dice got some TLC. Go figure the literal calmest cat you'd groom would be some stray.

    And fleas love the warm weather! I never knew how bad fleas could be until I lived in the south. With the right temperatures and humidity they go nuts. With freezing weather they have to start over each year, which keeps them in check to a great extent.

      Yeah, they get so bad here we ended up putting all of our dogs on flea and tick medicine. It's pricey but worth it since the problem has gotten really bad over the years in my part of the southern US.

    Oh, Vanessa! Thank you for the step by step tutorial on how to help a stray. I have a lot of strays in my area, living under my porch. If I can lure them with treats, maybe I can bathe them in sweats and get them more comfortable. I don't mind becoming the Crazy Stray Lady.
