just to clarify for those that had the same question as i did. fleas do not turn into tapeworms directly. they are an intermediate host for tapeworms, thus when ingested the tapeworm eggs inside the fleas can proliferate
I had no idea. I'm a wildlife rehabilitator. It clicked because a similar thing occurs when a wild bird, for example a robin, eats earthworms. The earthworm may host syngamus worms inside it (we nickname them gapeworms). When the bird swallows the earthworm, the syngamus worm works its way back up the throat and then down into the respiratory system, where it reproduces until they impair breathing, and the secondary infections they can cause, kill the bird. It's easy to treat. You've humbled me, Vanessa. This is exciting, to learn something new! :)
The look on his face when you put him in the first water container: OMG, what is this woman doing to me? I loved it. Thank you for helping this poor kitty. He was amazingly good for a stray cat.
I've helped 2 strays in my neighborhood who had injuries and they both seemed to understand I was there to help. One went from a feral cat suffering from a puncture wound in his shoulder and getting super thin (because he was unable to hunt) to being so sweet, allowing me to put medication on his wound and feed him until he's now nice and chunky for the winter.
He might have a home. He might just like running around outside and the owners have no way to keep him in. My sisters cat taught itself how to use the dog door in a week.
Unfortunately he lives in Florida where there is a massive, ongoing homeless cat problem. If people would actually help instead of clutching their pearls online, he might have a home.

Of all the years I lived in the south and battled fleas on my pets, I had no idea they shared a symbiotic life cycle with tapeworms! Thanks for continuing to share, groom, and teach!
I had no idea either despite years volunteering at a shelter. The way the channel put it, "When fleas are ingested they turn into tape worms..." is incorrect and I was surprised that they put that out, but I googled it and old CDC diagrams are mislabeled with that exact wording. Newer diagrams have the correct wording that adult fleas harbor tape worm cysticercoids, which are one of the intermediate life stages between a tape worm eggs and adult tape worms.
Tapeworms are parasites.. they do not share a symbiotic life with ANY pet(or human). Edit: Wanting to add just in case that symbiotic means beneficial to both parties or organisms. Like sharks and the little sucker fish that follow them around. Parasites, like fleas, ticks, lice, tapeworms, etc, need a host organism for their own gain and survival. Tapeworms can literally kill their hosts, humans and animals alike.
My parents spend the winters in FL. The fleas there are insane. They have to have their entire lot treated before they arrive or else you can't even get from the car to the door without fleas on your legs! These poor animals don't stand a chance. Thank you for giving this kitty some relief!

I'm not sure about Florida, but lots of rural areas are facing a crisis right now because shelters are overflowing with cats and dogs. One nearby shelter went into Code Red status multiple times last year and once so far this year. Code Red means if they don't start adopting or finding foster homes soon the they'll have to start euthanizing again. And I'm not 100% sure, but I think I remember reading that the shelter will not take in new animals right away if they are in Code Red status. The shelter said the biggest issue is a lack of low-cost spay/neuter clinics in the area. Luckily, the county is in the process of getting one built now. However, even if you can afford to take your pet to the vet, many vets are so booked up it can take months to get one animal spayed/neutered. So hopefully the clinic will help.
