There's a simple and practical reason to close applications when you no longer need them; it prevents the multitasking carousel from getting cluttered up and having to swipe through dozens of apps.
I agree, and I know some of them use battery life when running in the background, specially apps like Instagram. And swiping closing them when finish doesnt take that much battery unless you have an app you use a lot.
The thing is that I never go to multitask view just to open an app. Just use spotlight. The only time I use multitask view is when an app is frozen and I need to restart that app.
I have used android for 12 year and I am addicted to closing down the apps. In Android it's hard to get going with too many apps opened. I have used max 200$ phone up until now. Will get iPhone 13 in 2 days let's see how ot goes
As an iOS app developer, I wholeheartedly recommend you to close your app every now and then. Not because it can help speeding up your phone or something, but rather it helps to reduce the problems and errors you might run into. Starting an app from scratch runs a different set of steps than returning from background as well as clearing out a lot of "saved stuff". And more often than not, the developers will pay more attention to starting from scratch than from background. That's why there is the famous line: "Hello IT, have you tried turning it off and on again?"
Mike thank you so much I am an 82 year old novice every time I watch one of your videos I getting more and more knowledge on how to use my iPhone and with this new mama knowledge it makes the phone that much more valuable thank you so much please keep up the good work
A phenomenal feature I just discovered is Guided Access. I have an 18 month old who loves Frozen. Problem is she can’t help touching the screen on long car trips which inevitably takes her off the movie and she cries. Guided access essentially disables the screen, sound buttons, and lock button so that she can’t ruin her own day
And it's also a privacy feature, when you have to handle your iPhone to someone that you have trust issues with him. Just lock the app that he needs, and rest assured. I learned this trick from EverythingApplePro yt channel back in the day
0:23 you still wanna close down apps like GPS, for example Waze, it will continue to use your location even in the background and will use up resources and battery. Everything else are very good points.
As many others on here, I think closing apps is really useful. They often use data in the background and stay active in the background too, using a small bit of CPU power. So closing them once per day is pretty useful. But not after every use, sure, that’s overkill.
iOS dev here. Backgrounded apps absolutely run tasks in the background (depending on the app). Also, starting an app from the background vs starting anew runs completely different functions in the App Delegate and Scene delegate files. A lot of house keeping is often contained in these functions and leaving your apps open all the time can cause issues.
You do not need to set your location on the weather app if you rarely leave town. Turn it off and change your widget to your hometown. This way the weather app won’t constantly be updating via your device’s location.
Depending on your definition of town, where I live on the West Coast we have the greater Victoria Region made up of numerous municipalities and the weather can be clear and sunny in one, drive 15-30min and it could be windy, overcast and hailing then 5 min later in time will have totally changed.

First off I appreciate the lack of the intro story about how your dog sits on the couch and watch tv etc. You went right into the important stuff. I’m a new iPhone user and I’ve learned 7 outta 10 things in this video
You also don't need to go to the app carousel in order to switch to the last app you were on. A quick swipe left or right at the bottom of the screen quickly switches your apps.
great video as always, just a thought : at 4:30 i wouldn't suggest to anyone to remove the case when it's hot, especially if they are out, that would put them at high risk of the phone slipping and that would be a bigger problem IMO 😢. at 6:00 upgrading the camera to 4k 60 is good if you're watching your content on tv or screen that supports 4k. unfortunately i found out that most people tend to watch their videos on phones which doesn't support 4k. so imo i think 1080p 60 is the way to go to save space. thanks as always.😊
Respectfully, I think it’s a mistake not to use the highest quality video recording setting, even if your phone isn’t 4K. Especially with irreplaceable memories, you will want to be able to watch them in the best quality possible 20 years from now. You’ll never be able to recreate that video of your kids when they’re five years old.
Heating while charging is not an issue anymore as in ios16 charging will be on hold if the temperature of ur phone is more even if it is connected to power source.

Placebo. Ever heard that word? Because what you’re doing is actually draining your battery and somehow thinking that it’s extending your battery lol. I’ve done my own testing. One day I killed my apps throughout the day and the next day I left my apps open throughout the day. There was a big difference in battery.
I think the real reason people close all the apps is because it’s like peeling a scab or scratching an itch, you shouldn’t do it but it’s very satsifying.
Closing an app immediately after use feels as necessary to me, as zipping my pants immediately after taking a piss. Just like I don't stay unzipped just because I gotta take a piss again soon, I don't let the app run the background just because I might use it again soon.
I agree with everything you said here, however your last point was to reboot at least once a week... I only reboot when I feel my phone is getting slow or when there's a software bug/glitch, else it's not necessary since in standby mode iPhone does a lot of maintenance to for instance cache files.
And what do you recommend when within battery in settings you see multiple apps using background for hours?? Some Apps in the background will continue to consume battery and should be closed. Tip number one is a suggestion, and should not be taken as the end all.
I’ve had issues with keeping the apps running in the background trying to use other apps because it was using the processing power and my cellular data/Wi-Fi.., another reason I close them out is if I do keep apps running and open it back up it still tries to refresh even if I leave it running so I close them out because it refreshes the whole app. So no it doesn’t make it better with running it in the background.
It was my understanding that cables that don't have an MFI chip, won't work with an iPhone. As far as location services on always for the Weather app, why not just have it set to while using, instead of always?

What about the lack of a silent mode icon 🔕? 1:24 closing the app or not, consumes same ram and process. Ever heard of cache?

TY for the tips!! I believe You can also clear out the cache if you open the Camera app and close it
If Waza is not set to Always when you reconnect using CarPlay it never updates your location
You can also just hold “done” on the safari tabs as well

AAAAA+ advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, iDB!
0:50 it’s been hardwired in my brain from owning past androids to close all my apps otherwise I would have had insane lag. I try to keep them open but I do it unconsciously 😂
What about the lack of a silent mode icon 🔕? Since iPhones laks it, I regularly miss calls because there is no icon on the screen to remind me to switch it off when I'm in a huryy, busy, running errands etc.
So how to stop missing calls when using iPhone as a primary phone?
Spending 500$ on an Apple Watch to get notifications on your wrist is not an option.
very good taste for music man
What about apps that run in the background. Like a location app like Maps or UA-cam Premium. if you don't kill them they will continue to run and drain battery
08:06 Many people probably know this already but I just learned that you can ask Siri to restart your phone. Pretty convenient.
@0:38 does same apply for SamSungs one ui?
If it is an app that I online use once a week ir less I will close it.
Not closing app that are used continuously then I will les e it open.
