  • In the setting up a Chosham or Altar in house, first we need to have a chosham built with wooden structure in traditional manner with required motifs or have it painted traditionally, as Bhutia people follow Mahayana Buddhism, one room is reserved for an altar which is usually a wooden altar made by professional craftsmen. The order of the idols kept in Chosham needs to be like Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, Avalokiteshvara and holy scriptures are also kept in the Chosham, these statues represent (Kaya) Ku or body of triple gems.
Similarly, one set of Bum or 16 volumes of scripture needs to be installed at the right side of the main altar. We can also keep a text, Gyatongpa or Domang in the absence of 16 volumes of Bum. This signifies the speech of Buddha. Whereas small Chaitya a miniature stupa has to be placed in the altar which represents Chitta Thuk or heart. We can also place statues of any other deities of one’s choice such as of Tara (white & green dolma) and the Buddha Amitayu, or a picture of our root guru lama. The left side show case of the altar is to be reserved for Yangkhu Lhakhang, where gods and goddess of wealth have to be kept as per the advice of the lama.
