This is pretty cool, I just bought a 2007 nissan xterra and have been watching all of your videos, and now I find out you're working on a miata as well! I have a 1994 MX-5 I recently put a stage 1 clutch into, I can say your fluid service video is accurate even to my year of vehicle. I also use Ford motorcraft oil for my trans, it's amazing stuff, I also use it in my shifter turret as it is a separate reservoir to the transmission, and I noticed quite a difference from red-line.

Are the fill hole and drain plug in the same place for the 5 speed ?
The shifter turrent isn't required exactly but something you'd like to have done basically

I need to know on a 2000 auto trans, is the trans and rear combined fluid ? I can't seem to get that answer when I ask directly. If so what fluid?

no it is not mandatory. i work at a shop that never does that unless the costumer states it
How much transmission fluid does it need?
Wow the sports have a different transmission than the Grand Touring or the club. It looks a lot different.

I just bought a 2012 Sport with less than 11k miles on it. It shouldn't need the transmission fluid changed yet but for some reason the shifter feels surprisingly notchy and has more resistance than other 5 speeds I've experienced on this car. Should I simply check the transmission fluid levels? Would this just be done by taking off the fill hole to see if any fluid comes out?
Yes, you can take out the fill plug and see if any comes out. If not put on a glove and stick you finger in there and see if you can feel the fluid. If you can and its close to the fill plug just take a look at the fluid and see if the color/texture is right. If you can’t reach it then you might just want to swap out the fluid.
I have a 2009 2.0 sport tech which I just got a week ago, my gearbox feels notchy too which surprised me after all the reviews I saw before I bought it raving about the gearbox on MX5’s. I’ve ordered fluid and will be changing it ASAP, I didn’t know about doing the the turret so thanks for that, good video. I just did engine oil and filter yesterday and it was black as anything, something tells me she hasn’t been serviced in a while. Will do diff oil while im at it.
What fluid did you use ?
Always use the ford motorcycle synthetic, there is a specific one that matches best with the nc Miata, I've tried it before and it is definitely worth the extra $40 to get that exact type, your shifts will feel amazing
