Ah, finally they dealt with the battery problem I've had with these batteries and belt hook. The problem is that the belt clip is attached to the battery, and if you tug on the radio it pulls on the battery and disconnects the power from the radio. Also pulling on the battery weakens the retaining clips on the battery as well as frequent battery change outs also weaken the battery clips. These batteries are compatible with the VX-8 series, FT-1, 2, 3, and now FT-5 radios. Changing out batteries often is hard on the battery clips. The static "MEM SCAN" message display, instead of showing frequencies cycling while scanning, is completely and utterly visually unappealing and disappointing for the FT-5D, and wholly unexpected and undeserving of the current Yaesu flagship HT product. If more prospective buyers knew this before purchase, I guarantee it would affect sales- which is my mission. The underlying logic is that there would be SO MANY memories entered, there would be a lag in scanning due to the display. The FT5 has 900 memories I believe. What local area has 900 repeaters, simplex freq's and so on within HT operational range? Efficient use of the memory bank system brings the number to scan down to a far less subset. Those with FT-5DRs, could you please check the following. Received my unit yesterday and immediately noticed the following issue. When in dual VFO mode (VFO-A on HF or 50 MHz band/VFO-B on the default frequency 433.00 MHz), all other settings system default, I get two or six brief pulses of RF noise approx. every 60 seconds. Switching to mono VFO-A (HF band or 50 MHz) the pulses disappear, switching back to dual VFO mode as above, the RF pulses reappear. The source of the RF pulses are not external to the radio, duplicating the receive conditions on my FT-2DR there are no RF pulses. Tried re-setting to factory defaults and the problem is still there.
I have this issue with my FT 3DR... super frustrating. I have used a Yaesu FT70D and Baefangs UV-5Rs and Kenwood D74 never having this issue. I have a Kenwood D74 and prefer that HT to all others; however, now that Kenwood doesn't make an HT I need to baby it.
Warranty claim time. Send the thing back.
I was hoping the 3DR could work but I am overwhelm with the RF pulse noise issue too. And it's only 2 months old with lite usage. I was going to reach out to Yaesu but reading this comment and others I think Yaesu's quality has gone away! I am going to stick with iCOM and Kenwood for my future needs.
@@rocklover28 I spoke with Yaesu this morning and am sending them more data. They said they would see if they could find out what's going on.
I want to know if it's just my FT-5DR or they all suffer from this issue.
@@jbinsc Sure, will let you know what they find out.
@@jbinsc Update:
Source is likely some digital RF noise that's external to the radio.
Walking about half a block or so away from where I live the RF noise disappears.
Still can't explain why my FT-2DR doesn't pick it up under identical receive conditions or why it disappears on my unit when switching to single VFO-A mode but there we are, another source of RF noise to add to the evergrowing list.
I like the FT-5DR a lot, audio and sensitivity on HF is much improved over the FT-3DR.
I've just bought an FT3D and just can't live with the tinny thin sounding audio when compared to my FT1XD. Really spoils a decent radio. I can't see the FT5 being different in this regard.
I've heard that there's a piece of foam or one of the rubber gaskets used to help with waterproofing that once removed, allows the speaker to breathe a bit more and gives it a fuller sound.
@@USAFJUNKIE I'm guessing you void any warranty by removing that piece. In addition tothe obvious reduction in water resistance.
Use a Bluetooth device. I have some Soundbeats (like 30 bucks off Amazon) and they sych just fine with the radio.

What kind of radios are these?? I’m trying to learn from scratch & my travels have lead me here. Are these walkies, CB’s, ham radios?? Please help me out.
These are HAM radios, not CB.

Today there are fancy duplexers for 5G and future 6G. Possibly inband duplex? What if we can get that in a handheld and work for VHF and UHF!
I want to get either the 3 or 5. Is the 5 worth the extra $80 or so?
If you want it to be submergible. Yes.
I went with the 5 because of the audio issue with the 3. The IPX7 is a bonus.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I don't think the FT-3/FT-5 does split tones. None of the programming softwares (Chirp, ADMS-11, RTSystems) have a "receive CTCSS" column (called "ToneSql" in Chirp but same thing). The Yaesu manuals say nothing about it. Not sure if you have previously discussed this, if so I missed it. Not that big of a deal I guess on the receive side, right.
With you
I just hope they make a replacement for the FTM-7250, I really wanted one, but now there is no entry level Fusion dual band radio. My plan was to get one in a hammo can, basically a military ammo can that houses the radio, and a battery, and a slim jim antenna, the perfect solution for portable ops, especially because the FTM-7250 has the speaker and the mic plug on the front face of the radio. I hope whatever succeeds it has those same features.
I'm fitting my FTM7250 in a fat 50 cal can! Great minds. The radio was discontinued a few days after I got mine. Look for a second hand one perhaps?
@@craigpaternoster6221 If I can find one I will for sure. Used gear is hard to come by in my area. I messaged the guy right before they were discontinued. How are you liking yours? They seem like sweet little radios to me, and perfect for our application.
@@tylerdean980 It does everything I need, and it puts out the expected power... Unlike a few other radios I've used haha. It has fusion etc but isn't compatible with a hotspot. I don't use the fusion on it anyway but that seemed strange. It's single line display, but I've put everything I want to monitor into memory and it'll scan through about 100+ memories in 3 or 4 seconds. It seems to be a marmite radio, love or hate it but it meets all my needs. And it fits in the larger 50cal box
I have the FT-3D for a while now, and am satisfied with it.
I will not be purchasing the
FT-5D. 73, W2CH Ray
Looks like yaesu is just doubling down on more impractical form-factors and still smaller batteries.
It's the same battery, is it not?
@@ItsEverythingElse I dunno, looked it up, says it comes with a 2200mAh battery. My VX-7 came with a 1400mAh battery would run dead in 8 hours of light use, and take 14 hours to charge.
The two serious criteria Yaesu handhelds (this goes for Icom too) fail at: Form factor, and battery life.
@@highdesertdrew 10,5 В мало для SAD-25! Надо включать в CD-41 или в приёмник другой блок питания на 12 или 15 В. Зарядка будет быстрее.
If the APRS RX is as bad as the FT3DR then I wouldn't even bother. The two different FT3DRs I had were all but deaf. Just returned it and got my money back. Is the APRS RX improved any?
I never had APRS RX problems. So idk how I can answer your question.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thanks.... I understand... I may have to give Yaesu another chance.... I'm using mt FT-70DR here for local fusion. Just have to stick with my TH-D74 for APRS.... and the 878II
I'd like one but my wouxun will do me for now, alot to learn before going digital anyway. The Aussie dollar is crap so it cost a fair bit more here. :(
Make a shortwave test. Thanks
I'm a bit irked with Yaesu for discontinuing most of their dual-band mobiles and then come up with an unnecessary upgrade of the FT3D.
They have no more chips for the ft3. They had to change the chipset. See the interview link in my description.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse In other words, Yaesu needed to "upgrade", but offered customers get virtually the same radio at the FT3D's original price point.
They can't even squeeze another band in there? Baofeng and Alinco have triband HTs at a fraction of the cost.

Take a drink everytime he says nubbin
You kept calling the old one the 2 when it says on the front case FT3D.
Guess the excitement in getting the radio got to you :D
I bet my noxgear Bluetooth device would work well for this radio
I wonder how the Anytone code plug works with these?
How could it? Anytone is DMR, and this is System Fusion.
@@tylerdean980 k thanks. Been doing other hobbies last couple months. Was not even aware of the new radio till this vid.
@@SteelWolf13 Me neither, apparently that factory that burned down is what caused Yaesu to make this new radio, not that they planned an upgrade. It really sucks because most of Yaesu's mobiles have been discontinued because of this too. I really wanted an FTM-7250.

The added chat window on the left side of the screen blocks a third of your presentation space, is disruptive and accomplishes nothing positive or helpful for the viewer.
Cool. You don’t have to like the live streams. I post plenty of shorter videos with no chat.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Where the hell did you get the idea that I don't like live streams? That is not at all what I wrote. Learn to read and start by re-reading my comment you knucklehead!
The nubbin.
I like the touch screen, GPS feature, and the small form factor of the unit, so I am not knocking either of these HT's. Strictly speaking from a utility standpoint, looking at it as a tool - Why would I spend $500-$600 on a 5w Yaesu HT when I can get the same utility out of a $25 Baofeng radio?
Because a baofeng can’t do digital modes, APRS, or run two independent receivers. That is to just name a few things.
