Surprised it took this long? How many high-level wrestlers did Sean face before this? There's Aljo, but he threw it all away by running face first into Sean because he didn't want to be blamed for a boring fight. If he just stuck to the game plan and kept it boring, he probably would have won.
Also, Merab looked a lot physically stronger than Sean in the octagon. I don't think many thought he could pin Sean down for so long. His distance management was superb, and his takedowns were masked well behind punches that were just meant to close the distance. The takedowns were so explosive that Sean just never had time to react with a knee or even underhooks. He pretty much got ragdolled.

Diego's assessment of the womens title fight was harsh but fair. Nobody took any dmg, was like 2 women rolling on the matts at training. Really dogshit effort from the reporters, no questions about his future or top 5.

We all knew Merab is a cardio machine but he is also surprisingly funny, with all the occurences in the octagon, and when he rambles he sounds like Jackie Chan.

Merab had a smart game plan and stuck to it well. Instead of chasing the takedown and allowing Sean to move around and counter strike, or allowing Sean to control him and piece him up, he was being a "butterfly in a hurricane" and controlled the fight on the feet, making Sean try to find him, and executed swift, well timed takedowns.
You could also tell during the brief periods when Merab actively chased the takedown, Sean was more comfortable moving around off the back foot and was able to land some strikes.
When he wasn't shooting for a single leg he was just jumping around like a crab outside of range. I wouldn't call that "controlling the fight on the feet" lol. But I mean you're right in the sense it worked. It just so happens to be the least athletically pleasing "fighting" style possibly in the history of the sport. I put "fighting" in quotations because his entire strategy revolves around avoiding actually fighting, doing damage, advancing position or finishing the fight. But hey, it works (EPO).
