Both Jay and Amber are so young that they weren't around during the sixties, seventies, nor eighties when Ms. Patti was prolifically making records. Although still a very active vocalist, Ms. Patti continues to tour with her vast catalog of music. Jay, you've heard Lady Marmalade with its provocative question in French" voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir (do you want to go to bed with me tonight?)" and didn't connect the song with Patti La Belle. Ms. Patti created this huge disco hit with her group Labelle in 1974. You must check out Lady Marmalade during a future Female Friday. I'm sure you will enjoy it immensely.
They were on opposite sides of the Country, Patti recording her part in NYC, and Michael McDonald recording his part in L.A. This is reflected in the scenes of the video... This was quite ground-breaking at the time, especially a portrayal of an interracial relationship.. quite a bold position for both the artists, and the Record company to take, considering it was 1986... Masterpiece!!
Ground breaking...if you consider the fact that almost 20 years had passed since the Supreme Court's ruling in the landmark Loving v. Virginia case that made interracial marriage legal in this country. But yes, I get it. America tends to move verrrrrrry slow on most things. Especially things relating to race. Sad, but true.
I was there when the song came out, the racial aspect had little surprise or ground-breaking to it since MANY bands had members of different races since the 60's, and lots of people intermingled. MAYBE, just maybe if you were in the DEEP SOUTH in 'bigoted/prejudiced/racist territories' it may have been a thing. Jim Crow was ended 20 years prior. I'm tired of people making like The United States of America was still like it was in 1786 in 1986. And today's racial narrative of WS everywhere, by the MSM and DEMS, is BS. Very True! But then as we ALL know, people across ALL races & genders fell in LOVE with this song. And it quickly became a Timeless Masterpiece! On My Own holds a special meaning for many of us who adore it. 🥰
The most memorable thing I ever heard about Patti is when Joe Cocker said singing with Patti is like being hit by a freight train. Such power! ❤ her voice.
God I love Michael McDonald's voice so much. I can be perfectly happy and then hear this song and end up blubbing like a fool. This song just makes me emotional.

Michael McDonald was in the Doobie brothers before he went solo. His voice seems to just blend with anyone very easy. In the early to mid 80s it seemed like he was on every slow song made somewhere in the background. "I keep forgetting" was probably his biggest hit as a solo artist. But many duets with legends like Aretha Franklin and James Ingram.

You have to listen to New Attitude. I had the great fortune of interviewing Patti LaBelle for my teen newspaper years back. Also had the pleasure of meeting her sister before she passed. Both were sweet and loving. Hated hearing her sister had passed, but was so happy that Patti escaped the family curse that she lived in fear of. She was so shy back then, but came alive on stage. She turned into a wild child on stage. If I hadn’t seen the difference with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it. In the middle of singing she started twirling the mic stand. She let it go, and it went flying to the other side of the stage. The person on stage in that spot ran offstage to avoid being hit. She danced across the stage kicking her shoes off into the audience. Two different personalities on and off stage. Off stage she spoke in soft tones. She seems to have moved passed that shyness.
Patti LaBelle is an icon, with one of THE BEST voices on the planet! I've heard that Patti and Michael recorded their parts separately, not actually meeting in person until after the song was produced in the studio. As others have mentioned, Patti's version of Lady Marmalade is a MUST, under the 70s group named LaBelle. Please continue to delve into the catalogs of both Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald. Two of the greatest voices of my generation. As you know, Ms. Patti is a FANTASTIC cook and has often cooked for her band members, including one that she chided for not returning her Tupperware. That band member became famous as a solo act, and gifted Ms. Patti with a diamond ring years later for the lost container. That band member was none other than Elton John!

God damn Michael gave me chills when his voice came in. God I love this era of music so much
These two were made to sing together I absolutely love this song
So happy you’ve discovered the powerhouse that is Patti Labelle!❤️❤️
WOW! I'm sooo sorry you guys (& other young people) are just being introduced to this song & these fantastic performers!🥲🥲
I lost a very dear friend who I grew up with this year. I'm heart broken. This song brings back fun lafter and memories. I'm devestated. It cuts me deep
Two legendary singers from the 70’s and 80’s. I remember when this song came out they did seem like an odd match. It just shows how magical it can be when you combine two great singers from totally different genres of music. Great review guys love this song.
These 2 together...just amazing.
You should hear her SANG "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". It's a spectacular, awe inspiring, chill inducing musical MASTERPIECE!

You're right, Amber. That's a funky rhythm guitar in the background. Makes the dancefloor feel like a cloud! Great reaction y'all! One really Funky Jam by Patti? - 'Feels Like Another One' with Big Daddy Kane! Check it out!
"If only you knew" is a drop the mic song. My favorite Patti song.

Patti Labelle Somebody you one of best song ever!!!
Patti labelle dates back to the early sixties. She slammed into the 80’s with New Attitude, a great song and a bangin 80s groove.
Patti Labelle's If You Asked Me To is another great listen in this vein.
Another fantastic reaction video. This song is on one of my playlists and even today (old guy, here) still gives me goosebumps when Patti starts to sing. Stay safe, you two 👍🏽 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Omg...this song doesn't even scratch the surface of Ms. Labelle's voice. Check out her live performances & Somewhere Over the Rainbow live is a MUST!
This song was actually brought to Patti as a solo song which she did but than she said she wanted it to be a duet. They asked who she wanted it to be a duet with and she said Michael McDonald
