  • The repetitive calls of Madagascar nightjars.
You've heard nightjars before, but have you hear the Mad nightjar? On my trip to Madagascar in 2022 I spent a lot of time exploring patches of dry forest at night. One of the iconic sounds of the bush at night there is the clicky rattle of this secretive nightjar. There are lots of them around and they're not shy at all!
Recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi microphones. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

Another magnificent animal that looks extremely wise. eBird describes the call as an introductory “tuk” followed by a long, wooden rattle. The call reminded me of when you drop a steel ball from a height and the first bounce is more intense while the rest are like a reverberation.
Interesting fact: The Madagascar nightjar is also native to Aldabra, a coral atoll lying to the North. It is also found in Nosy Boraha, an Island off the East coast.

It does sound a bit like a steel ball being dropped.

What an excellent recording, and what a striking bird call. I love listening to critters that aren't local to me and trying to figure out how I would describe that sound in my writing.

Absolutely love nightjars. They really are such a unique type of bird.
Anyways, I’ve got a little question for you if you don’t mind me asking; How exactly did you first get into sound recording? I’ve done a little bit of recording myself recently but I’m not quite familiar with the basics just yet and was wondering curious how a pro like you started out. P.S: Love your work 🙏🙏🙏

Thanks! I started to do sound recording when I was working as a sound designer and wanted to capture my own material some 15 years ago.
