  • We are cutting out and clearing bamboo for this customer. We opened up the back of his property to be a more useable space, removed the bamboo and did a little forestry mulching as well.

My first house had bamboo in the back of the yard. I dug up all the roots digging down to clean dirt. About 10 inches. When I got it all out of my yard (seven pickup loads of roots.) I buried aluminum sheets vertically 18 inches in the ground 6 inches above the ground. Mind you this was in 1976. To this day there is still no bamboo in that backyard. A lot of work all by hand but it was well worth the time

Good way to ensure that you will be back in a year or two to do the job again. If you don’t remove the rhizomes that shit will be back in a few months.

The only issue I have with removing bamboo is the positive ecological impact bamboo has. I've gone over this before, but for anyone who missed it. Bamboo requires 25% less resources, produces 35% more oxygen, and removes 5 times the CO² than an equivalent forest of hardwoods or pines. The other benefits being for textiles, and soil fertility. Bamboo produces 6 times the useable textile material per acre than cotton, and bamboo naturally fertilizes the soil. Now this customer wanted it gone. That's your job that's what you got to do. I'm glad you did it in an eco-friendly way, and you did a great job. This is more geared towards landowners who want to eliminate bamboo. They have a great natural resource that helps clean the air we breath better than anything else and they should keep at least a small patch of it and just maintain it. I should do my part in educating how to control a small plot of bamboo. You need to put it in a raised bed with a solid barrier of whatever material you desire 12" deep into the soil, and have the bed raised 12" above the soil. This keeps the bamboo from spreading via roots and rhizomes. Then when you go to mow the lawn (even if the patch isn't near the lawn) circle the patch and pull up any little shoots you may find from droppings. This keeps it contained, and you get to reap the benefits of this wonderful natural resource. Alright my little preachy moment is done😂

My Dad used to call it the Devil Plant. We spent an entire summer getting rid of it out of his backyard, one root ball at a time. It sends out rhizomes underneath the ground.

That’s a huge job! Running bamboo is really hard to get rid of. IME the root ball isn’t the biggest problem, the rhizomes are. Unless you dig out and remove the rhizomes, new shoots will still continue to pop up. Man, I wish people would do more research before planting this stuff because controlling it is damn near impossible and removal is an absolute nightmare. It’s a good thing you guys had the room to bring in so much heavy equipment!

That turned into a huge lot that is now useable. Nothing on earth smells worse than a decaying animal YUCK! My gosh you can tell how tenacious the bamboo is by how many passes it took for the rake to even push it out and how much topsoil had to go. We almost put bamboo in our family home. We were on a corner lot with a pool and I wanted something that would provide some screening for the kids. I’m so glad we did not use bamboo. Great job UBC. 👍🥰❤️

Advice from someone who has spent two years manually controlling (battling) bamboo: You must remove the rhizomes. Any partial fragment of the bamboo rhizome left behind will go into survival mode the following Spring and new bamboo shoots will sprout in areas you thought were clear of any existing bamboo. It is amazing stuff, really. You must remove all of the rhizomes (dormant and active). It is the only way to rid an area of bamboo. End of story.

When I was young and stupider than I am now, I planted some bamboo in my yard. I was keeping it mowed around it and thought I was doing ok. Then about 3 years later it started popping up shoots 10-15 feet from the original clump and about that same time I saw on the news that cities in my area were passing laws that if you plant it and it got into your neighbors yard you would have to pay to have it professionally removed as well as pay fines for spreading noxious weeds. I went out and dug up the main clump, watching for any runners going out from it. Then I dug the entire length of each runner and took the whole thing out. I had one shoot pop up the following spring but after taking that one out I never saw it again and it's not growing in any of my neighbors yards, so I guess I was thorough enough to get it all.

My neighbor has asked me to help him get rid of his bamboo. The is about 80 feet wide by 10 feet deep of them. I have a Deere 2025R with a stump bucket. I plan on digging them out and seeing this video I think that wont be a huge deal since you really explained very well the root system. To keep the bamboo from sprouting up later would burning the ground with a propane torch help? I am sure he does not want to deal with them again (nor do I). Any guidance would be appreciated. Keep up the great work on the videos. Thank you for providing so much helpful information.

What you will find with bamboo in a garden as well (which we found out in England, when we moved into our new house) is that when it travels and appears on another side of the garden, you will start getting bald patches in your lawn. As it sucks all the moisture from the soil and the grass won’t grow, as seen in this video where you walked upto the house to show it sprouting. That bamboo will be under that house and even further. It is a bitch to get rid of. The black bamboo stays clumped and doesn’t travel much, but green bamboo……good luck getting rid of that!

  • @uncommonlogic1698
    @uncommonlogic1698 3 роки тому

Bamboo is a grass, roots grow to a matt that supports other stalks.
Roots will spread and stalks will come up.
Like weeds, you must keep cutting them short , and cut often.
Covering the ground will keep them down, so mulching a thick bed will slow it down.
If you want to remove permanent.
Cut stalks as close to the ground.
Stack stalks to dry.( They will burn)
Dig up roots and bury deep.
Spread hole dirt over old bamboo growth.

If you leave any roots from the bamboo, it will grow again. To reduce the growth you have to contain the roots so they don’t grow more. So just removing them from the ground level will not stop them. Be careful.

  • @williambryant5946

The only good way I've found to keep bamboo from growing back is to cut about a foot to 18 inches of dirt away where its standing to get rid of all those roots especially the thicker white pieces. If you leave one piece of that white root stuff the bamboo will be back in no time at all. Before you make the cut to get rid of the roots dig a deep hole to push it into and make sure you get at least a good 2 foot, 3 is better; of dirt cover over it that doesn't have any of those white shoots in it. That stuff is a pain in the ass. If he gets the goats in there fast after you've done what you're doing here they will eat the little tender shoots as they're coming up and probably get rid of it that way. I've seen a town close to me that had some problems with bamboo and kudzu on a large piece of land they owned and they didn't have the money to pay for someone to come in and remove it all. It was mostly kudzu and an area of bamboo about the size you had here. The city workers went out and cut all the bamboo down, piled it up and burned it. Then they fenced the entire property in and put goats in there. The goats eat all that kudzu down and kept the bamboo from growing back. I think it took about a year but they got rid of the kudzu to where the town workers could get rid of the clumps of stalks that was left. I'm not exactly sure why it was such a priority to get rid of the kudzu and bamboo on that land bit they had an important reason I'm sure. That was a good spot for a pond.

I think that anyone who plants bamboo shouyld be fined 100 dollars per plant ! It is truly horrible stuff to get rid of-I had to get rid of a patch in the garden of our present house; approx 20 feet x 8 feet by hand; no way we could get any machinery in. It took about 2 months and broke my heart; not to mention breaking a new spade and fork, and a truck load of waste. There is still odd runners popping up now over a year later.
