So WHAT HAPPENED to cause this? Did he forget his line? Was there a stuck accelerator at the last second? Is there any official analysis of the possible cause of this accident? RIP Georg Plasa
Georg Plasa was an incredible driver with 20 years of experience. This is likely either a mechanical failure of some sorts (steering disconnection, failure, etc) or something else happened with the wheels to keep them straight. A stuck accelerator could be another cause, but i'm not sure. You can see smoke coming from the brakes/wheels right before impact, so he was on the brakes HARD, but it wasn't enough. You can tell by the throttle there that he fully expected the car to turn right as well. It's possible the tires failed as well, causing massive sudden under-steer. It looks incredibly similar to the Aryton Senna accident in F1 that was caused by a bad weld in the steering column that snapped it in half, causing the exact same driving straight off at full speed issue as this one. Aryton's crash was an awful one, and he at least had the benefit of a full carbon monocoque and some of the safest equipment man had at that time. Unfortunately, Plasa had a roll cage and a 6 point harness, and that's about it. Had he crashed into a barrier, the barrier would have transferred enough energy out of the car that maybe the cage would have held up better, but when you slam into ground like that there's no give, it's all on your car at that point.
