  • The first volume of The Best of Carnatic Instrumental features noted Carnatic musicians. Carnatic classical compositions have been presented with instruments like violin, saxophone, nadaswaram and chitraveena that will make the surrounding air grow rich in mysticism. The best thing about Carnatic music is that even when it’s played on instruments it is so composed that it can also be performed in gayaki style. The renditions of the Carnatic music doyens will make you long for more.

I don't know if this is even answerable, but: I have been listening to North Indian instrumental music a very long time. And the more I run across "fusion music" the more I like the "real" INDIAN Indian music, not the latest "world music." I DO make an exception for Oregon, Shakti and Remember Shakti*. I know they make some classicists cringe, but I do feel they are SINCERE and HONEST. Which of course is what matters in the end. However, to go from fusion towards N. Indian classical, the next step seems towards S. Indian of course. What I'd like to know, is there SOME sort of website which translates which North Indian ragas have a basis in Southern Indian music? I have been exposed to both L. Shankar and Srinivas through McLaughlin, and even I can figure out where the Northern Indian "Kirwani" came from. And Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan were both known "includers" when it came to it. But did like MOST North Indian ragas start somewhere South, or like, if I wanted to find a possible Southern root for Northern raga "Bilaskani todi" where could I look?
Oh, and I can barely read French and German, so if a link is there but not English, it's better than nothing. Thanks!
*(And ANYTHING Anoushka Shankar does... I am madly in love and nothing anyone can say can help me there!)
