I have always admired soldiers wearing the para wings. Not because of the jumping, but because they survived the grueling physical training courses shown here.

  • @peterstanton253

Look - if you are cut out for this lark you have nothing on this earth to worry about. Well... it's not easy - it's irksome, exhausting at times but mostly a doddle - until it comes to jumping then it's a test of nerve. If you can't handle this - it is definitely not for you. For some the whole course is easy - these are the ones that the Para Reg want. It's as simple as that. I watched my buddies fail - not make it - sad - but you have to recognise - it is for the good that only the cream make it. I reckon that 95% of the ones who pass through to be a Para didn't find it overly gruelling - and that's the guys that they want. Please don't think I'm being phony or anything - I was young 17-1/2 and I didn't find anything too difficult. Worrying about the course is a non starter - just be yourself - you've either got it or you haven't. oh - and good luck! (I served 9 years in 2 Para).

Totally agree, I did 8 years in the REME and thought about doing P company until I went training with some guys who'd passed it. You either have the natural fitness levels or you don't. I'm genetically predisposed to burst strength with shite stamina so couldn't get my fitness anywhere near.

Its like being paid to go to the gym and do all those expensive classes (no ladies to watch tho) and you get fed!! So if you love phys, then enjoy it. Its like selection, i grew up carrying a bergen over dartmoor, love the hills and so not too much of a problem!

This is how my dad joined according to my mum. Much of what I know was related to me by her because dad only told me the lighter stuff. In 42 dad was an apprentice copper smith (protected war trade) working in a grimsby area dockyard but he wanted to be an air gunner; a “brylcreem boy”. So he left without permission (18 years old) but the RAF had a long waiting list for air gunners (probably 50% chance of death). Got hauled into court and judge gave him 2 weeks to join up or get convicted for leaving a work trade without permission. So he joined the army. While at depot, different army branches held “trade fair” recruitment drives and when he saw the Paras he was sold. D Day at 19 (9 Para) volunteered to join MarketGarden (156 Para ) original unit but broke leg on jump just before Arnhem, back to9 Para and Ardennes counter attack, Rhine Crossing then dash to Baltic to block Soviet westward drive to Denmark. Advance party to India for jungle warfare training for invasion of Japan. Fortunately the A-bomb stopped that. Then Palestine, I was born in Aldershot followed by Suez. Mum had had enough and we came to Canada. When he arrived he joined up and became a Princess Patricia (they had an parachute role). Dad passed away in 2010. Like most children of the greatest generation, I regret not learning more about my incredible father. My namesake is Lt Ian MacDonald 7 Para KIA 29/6/44.

If you're slim built and not overweight - you'll find you have a leading edge on your contemporaries - you'll find it a lot easier than some. Forget about the advice I see in this blog about building your body muscles up and all that jazz - you don't need to be Charles Atlas! (famous body builder). Just keep yourself in a fit shape (without going over the top). Rippling Arnold Schwarzenegger muscles aren't necessarily going to cut it in Para Reg - there's a lot more involved. Your trainers will use simple psychology and study if you're the right temperament, attitude etc.

Damn so these guys really are the closest analog to the US Army Rangers rather than to US Army paratroopers.
Our paratroopers are significantly easier to get into. It’s just a matter of having the motivation to do the parachute training and be in an environment where everyone in your unit genuinely wants to be there rather than just having become an infantryman by circumstance or for the college money.
They put all of us paratroopers in Afghanistan in the mountains on the Pakistan border, so it was generally heavier fighting than guys from mechanized or Stryker units experienced. But still conventional troops doing conventional missions.
    Much respect to the paras.

Please excuse this ignorant (uneducated) Yank, but at 3:19 in the video it discusses the “20 mile” foot movement in 4 hours and 10 minutes or less. I could be terribly naive but shouldn’t the narrator have said “20 kilometers....”. The stride in the video there does NOT look like a 12.5 mile per minute pace to me. The US Army “Expert Infantryman Badge” (EIB) requires passing a number of events and the foot march is done as “12 miles in 3 hours or less” with “light kit” but it can be accomplished as an individual. The US Army Special Forces phase 1 (of 3) foot march is 12 miles in 3 hours but done as a group and with “moderate kit” (27.2 Kg on the back at the finish line, plus other gear and rifle), to say “20 miles in 4 hours 10 minutes “ seems pretty “ambitious.” No offense intended if I am wrong. ....from a retired US Army paratrooper who earned his wings in 1977 and has deep respect for the Paras.🇺🇸🇬🇧

The time varies but 6 months plus is a good estimate. You need to pass medical, fitness and blood sickle cell if required. It's more a case of how quickly can you pass the entry requirements as doing the bleep test (as it is now and not a distance run of 1.2 miles like the video says) at 11.06 requires a high level of fitness. Then there's the assessment centre visit and if you pass you then get to go to catterick to do your training. Could talk a year and a half to complete realistically. If you break a bone this will put you on medical deference too which would be another year.

Yep, they get a chance to transfer to another unit. I joined Junior Para in 72 as a 15 yr old. Did just over a year in JPC then went through Depot Para in 402 platoon and Joined 2 Para.. A lad I joined up with in 72 was called Dave Prestige. He accompanied me through JPC, then Depot Para passing it all. He did his two balloon jumps no problem but on our first aircraft jump, he was nowhere to be seen after we landed. We were all a bit confused. By the time we got back to Lyneham, his locker was empty and he was never seen again. Turns out he refused to jump in the aircraft. Such a bloody waste of a good soldier. We never found out if he transferred to another unit or went back to civvy street.
