  • I was very fortunate to be given samples of Montblanc inks by the Pen Shop to test out. Here are the inks I was given as an overview....

have you tried pelikan's brilliant brown? it's a great brown with golden undertones and shades in a way that is totally charming. it's my standard the way that many people use black ink

Diamine do a lovely ink called Ancient Copper, not sure that I would call it a totally brown ink, more orange brown. If you haven't used it, it could be worth a look at. Thanks for an interesting video

Thank you for this, very insightful and helpful indeed. Could review the Czech Koh-i-Noor inks please? I find them extremely good, as well as very inexpensive. But what would you say?

Royal Blue is my everyday ink. It's one of those inks I am not afraid to put in any pen. I agree on the Ancient Copper comments below. That is a nice ink. I am not a fan of brown ink, I did have a sample of Omas Sepia that I liked. ( Wish I would have got a whole bottle when it was available)
I had been wondering about the Oyster. I think after hearing you say that it reminded you of pencil a bit, I might grab and sample and try it out. Thanks for the review!

Another fab review, Ive been ogling those gorgeous bottles. Im normally an old fashion ink bottle kinda girl, but these look gorgeous.
As for the colours thanks for sharing each one and giving us an indepth summary of them. I do like the Royal Blue and the Irish Green has a lovely brightness to it. However I would normally jump to buying the purple inks but Im not a lover of this Lavender purple as its more of a purple black and I prefer writing in brighter colours.
But I would be tempted to buy the Irish Green just for the bottle sitting on my desk lol!
    Thanks again.

I wish they had more permanent options. As it stands, the only reason I would get Montblanc ink is to put in a Montblanc pen. I love Noodler’s inks in all of my current pens.

For those who have used both, would you recommend mint Blanca ink or iroshizuki by pilot?

I totally agree with your comment about brown inks. I'm now trying out my third but none really work for me not even for Calligraphy

Did you try Diamine sepia ? It has a very nice shading.

I love irish green. I like a yellow green and that hits it wonderfully. I have oyster grey and i really like it too. Like you said its like pencil actually. I think it has a hint of green and clay i live right next to the ocean and there are oysters in the mud and the ocean is greenish where i live. Pelikan royal blue is a very nice blue with some violet drying into a chalky effect. For brown i got diamine rustic brown and its a warm old barnwood brown and i quite like that type of brown. I also got diamine sargasso sea. Its a rich vibrandt blue with some red in it. I also have pelikan black its a fine regular black with grey in it. What else? Edelstein aventurine and edelstein topaz (uugh too light blue) and edelstein smokey quartz because i got the m200 pen kit with it. The pelikan pens are top class pens. Ohh i also have diamine eclipse. Its nice. Its basically black but it is a cool shade of dark purple or violet for the studious eye. I guess i wont be running out of ink for some years.

You should try Diamine "Ancient Copper", I find this is an excellent ink.

I happen to like certain brown inks, but not most of them. I thought your review was very nice. I would like to see comparisons to what you do have in that color range, up close...to make it better. I have yet to try the Toffee Brown, but I hear it is lovely. The video was a little far away, to get a good look at your color samples. I have enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work.
Oh, and the Irish Green is a wonderful shader, and a great performer. I was lucky enough to try that one, and it is on my wish list.

I have some of these. From the standard inks, I really like the Toffee brown. The one I am not enamoured with is the burgundy. My absolute favorite is the William Shakespeare red special edition..... Absolutely looove that one.

Itˋs a shame. Although they produce it in Austria it is pretty difficult to get here. Iˋd like getting the William Shakespear ink too.

Please tell me what is so special and unique about the vintage Black M.B. Ink from W. Germany ? I’ve used only it in my 149 for 30 years and stockpiled it. Color and permanence. aside, it’s lubrication and smoothness in ALL my pens just seems beyond compare. Why?

I am surprised that you found the Permanent Black as being akin to the Mystery Black. The former is as saturated and dark as most of the Noodler’s black inks, which makes it one of the darkest, most true, of black inks available for fountain pens. The latter is significantly lighter in tone.

The only Mont Blanc ink in my collection is Oyster Grey. I definitely agree it looks like pencil writing. I would prefer it to be just slightly darker. My vision is not the best and I need more contrast between the ink and the glare of white paper (Rhodia particularly). I might check out Irish Green as that appeals to me just at the moment. Thanks for the review, it's good to see them all side-by-side.

Actually I love brown inks (Especially Diamine-sepia, Omas Sepia and Iroshizuku Ina-ho). But green inks are my favourite. (Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine, Akkerman Groenemarkt Smaragd and MontBlanc Irish green are my most used greens.)

For brown inks, have you tried J. Herbin Lie de The? Amazing shading, it's really nice. I also like Diamine Macassar, which a lot darker brown.

Why would you “want to like brown ink” but “don’t like brown ink”? You either like brown ink or not , I would have thought.

I just discovered your channel. I subscribed. I hate to be another male mansplaining you brown ink. I understand where you are coming from. I really want to like brown more than I do. I have one brown ink that I do like. I just received J. Herbin Caroube de Chypre Ink. It is not bad. I would be more than happy to email you a writing sample. I currently have it in a pen with a 1.1 stub (it is a fine stub, I have also have another 1.1 stub that is broad). It writes very well, the ink I mean. I found your video looking for examples of Mont Blanc ink as I am wondering if I should order some. I think I will try the Midnight Blue. I love different shades of blue. I have 4 of the Iroshizuku line of inks, all a different shade of blue.

This is a great review and I've always loved Montblanc's "shoe" bottles. But there's one point I'd like to make.
You talk about this brand as if it's a choice, but for someone using a £1000 Montblanc fountain pen there is no choice of ink brands! If you want that lifetime guarantee to remain in place, you HAVE to use Montblanc ink and nothing else. Montblanc don't make budget pens; their cheapest retails at about £450. For Montblanc pen owners, Montblanc ink is the ONLY choice!!

Meh... I'm sorry to put it that bluntly, but it's really difficult to listen to you. So much blah-blah for so little content. This whole "review" feels sluggish, and you sound tired, distracted and uninterested.
It's a pity that you didn't even try to find a substitute for the cracked pen, in order to do an at least visually pleasing presentation.
