    In all fairness you double bagged the icecream which would have insulated it from the cold more.

    • @wakeupitskelsey
      @wakeupitskelsey 5 років тому +7

      Watery Wishes not significantly.. it’s fairly thin plastic

    • @jumble3356
      @jumble3356 5 років тому +81

      Regardless of how thin it is, the addition of another bag doubled and in some spots, like up the top (where the inside bag is folded over), quadrupled the insulating effect. The fact that plastic is non conductive adds to it's insulating properties

    • @ferociousgumby
      @ferociousgumby 5 років тому +34

      Yes, there would be a little bit of air between the two bags which would really insulate the inside.

      Also salt was melting the ice so would have added double the ice then add more ice as it melted. Because at one point it was liberally just ice water.

      It also helps to surround the bag with ice entirely, not just at the bottom. When I did this for a chemistry experiment, we actually put the bag and ice in a large container to shake it, like an empty coffee can/container or cookie tin.

    When I was living in my van I would sometimes make ice cream from coffee creamer servings and sugar packets I got from McDonalds. I didn't use the double bag method; instead I stirred the cream mixture with a hardware paint stick inside a metal camp pot. The pot sat in a small styrofoam cooler with the ice and salt. It took about 20 minutes as well. A lot of work but it was free and a nice treat. Enjoyed this demo.

    Emmy - a hint - if you add a bit of water (1/8 cup) between the cream bag and the doubling bag it will freeze faster because of enhanced conductivity. This should eliminate the time penalty you pay for the safety of double-bagging. If you are really into squeezing the bag to see if it ready, use schnapps or Drambuie instead of water. The schnapps won't freeze like the water will and you can use the schnapps for an extra special topping.

    • @tom_something
      @tom_something 5 років тому +4

      Yep. I'm not sure if it's accurate that salt actually reduces the overall temperature, but one thing it does for sure is reduce the freezing temperature of water. So the ice doesn't have to rise to 0C to start melting, which is good because 0C doesn't make ice cream. Liquid water is much better at exchanging heat with stuff than solid ice is, so having liquid water at less than 0C helps chill the ice cream mixture more quickly.

    • @benthere8051
      @benthere8051 5 років тому +11

      I am sure there is a very thin layer of air between the two bags. Air doesn't conduct heat anywhere near as well as water. The water provides a thermal bridge between the brine and the cream. And the salt does reduce the temperature of the brine. The temp of the ice in your fridge is probably 20 degrees F, and the salt will make that into brine at 20 F as well. And that brine conducts heat much better than the ice.

    I remember doing this all the time with my sister as a kid. We original got the recipe for it in a kid’s science experiment book. We would also add food coloring to get crazy colors.
    (I also remember we would shake it for awhile, but sometime we didn’t want to shake for that long so we would just stick it in the freezer half way through to firm up and it would still be fine.)

Itwas great for the summer and made good memories.

    A couple years back, my son wanted ice cream - didn't have the extra money for it - so I googled homemade ice cream - found a bunch of recipes like the one you had but I didn't have corn syrup or heavy cream... but it WAS almost Thanksgiving and I had a TON of evaporated milk from a coupon splurge I'd done --- so I just grabbed a can of evaporated milk and a packet of hot cocoa mix (with marshmallows) threw it together, stuck it in a bag, had him shake it for a while - and boom, 2 helpings of chocolate ice cream for him and myself. It was perfect! instead of using the second bag for the salty ice, I used a big bowl with a lid - put into a bag and yes - it was quite noisy but honestly I think it worked fantastically, and it was definitely somewhere around the 5 minute mark with the amount of agitation/salt-ice that was inside it.

    I loved this! I did this in high school chemistry class, a hint, it happens much faster if you don't double bag (freezer bags are super hardy) and you put in half the ice and salt in, then the cream bag, and then the rest of the ice and salt with a dash of water. When we did it everyone was done within 8-10 min. Again love your videos!

    We used to winter camp.
    We'd put the ingredients in a coffee can. Chase it around, gently, in the snow. After 25 minutes, we would have ice cream. I know! We're a bunch of sick puppies for having ice cream in the winter

    Try putting the ice/salt loose in a salad spinner with the double bagged ice cream mixture. Reverse rotation periodically and flip bag over as well once in awhile.

  • @davidxia8881
    @davidxia8881 5 років тому +6

    the reason why it was so time consuming was because you should have used a lot more salt to decrease the temperature a lot instead of adding more ice.

    I find that it thickens much faster without the milk, so just cream, sugar and flavouring. Also, try it without double bagging the cream, and try leaving a little bit of air in the bag of cream so it can "churn" when you're shaking it :)

  • @metaspherz

    I've been making homemade ice cream for over 50 years (I'm 71, taught by my ice cream loving grandmother). I've used manual and electric methods but I still buy store-bought because I'm basically lazy. But, when I run out of ice cream in the Summer I make my own in a pinch. HINT: NEVER use corn syrup rather use granulated or powdered sugar for better results. Also, blend a couple teaspoons of custard powder or flavored drink powder to your batch (use less vanilla though). Use a whisk to mix the ingredients before pouring into a Ziploc baggie to add more air for a lighter ice cream experience. Also, the double bag wasn't really an issue because your ice started out wet and looked partially thawed therefore it didn't get cold enough. Ice water doesn't make firm ice cream. Use the hardest ice straight from the freezer (and rock salt) to make your ice cream firm faster with minimum melting -- 5 minutes tops when the ice is super hard cold! Experiment with frozen fruit...canned and fresh will work too when partially frozen. Partially to fully frozen blueberries or strawberries are incredibly delicious! Mash a couple tablespoons of a ripe banana in with the vanilla ice cream mixture for a truly satisfying taste treat!

    I did this KETO and Vegan! I used 1/2 cup coconut creamer, 1/2 cup coconut milk. 2 tbsp monk fruit, 1 shot of chocolate stevia, and 1/2 tbsp cocao powder. I wisked it all together until the cocao powder was fully dissolved. Then I mixed it all together! SOOOO good. I can never find vegan ice cream that is also Keto! I will use this anytime I have a craving for ice cream! :)

    We did something similar in elementary school. We had clean paint cans or coffee cans and a small Tupperware container of crem, milk, and vanilla ect. We layered ice, salt, ice, salt, ice cream container in the middle, ice, salt, ice, salt, in the metals cans until full and a good sealed lid and rolled it back and forth to each other. It took 5 mins for ice cream. It was fun.

    Used to do something like this with my brother when we were younger. Similar recipe, but we sealed the mix in a gallon baggie or an old coffee tin, and put the whole thing inside a HUGE pickle jar (the ones that used to store those big, whole pickles that you could buy at our middle school ball games for .50 each). Fill the big jar with ice & salt, and we sat on the kitchen floor and rolled it back & forth between us until it was done 😌 good memories with my bubba ❤️

    I’m surprised you’ve never heard of this before. We did it as a project in science class for at least 3 years in a row in elementary school when I was a kid. I even did it at home once or twice in the summer just for fun.

  • @yvans.73
    @yvans.73 5 років тому

    I did this with my elementary kids! Ours took abt ten minutes (cause the kids had a tendency to get tired or shake unevenly) but if you use a rock salt and ice water mixture between the two bags it should come together a LOT faster. And our ice cream recipe just used heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla.
    I think your idea of using heavier duty bags was smart. When we made ours, a few of the kids didn't seal their inner bag properly, so some salt water got into the bags.

    You needed to remove the water when adding more ice and add more salt to make it quicker. As elsewise the salt ratio is getting diluted so isn't keeping it as cold as previously.
    We have made it in 10 minutes easy with girl guides (UK girl scouts) for years.
    We also make "arm pit fudge" you should try that one :) it's another recipe that calls for a zip lock bag to make it!
