How the Government of Bangladesh Collapsed (August 2024)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лис 2024
- Just a few days after i made my previous video on the subject, the government of Bangladesh completely collapsed. As for how this happened, things escalated quickly after talks between the government and protestors broke down. More lives were lost. And the full story is a mess. Let us dive into things again my friends.

I remember when my high school US history books ended - usually 9/11, war on terror, maybe a snippet about Obama. I graduated in 2016. It feels like half that whole book is gonna be the gap between that and now.

One of the most hilarious and effective events:
The Govt. declared nationwide mourning for the killings, which was their own doing. They asked everyone to show 'Black' as a symbol of the mourning day. ⬛
The whole nation rejected this ridiculous proposal. Students declared that they would instead use 'red colour' 🟥. And in hours all the social media became red in Bangladesh.
It felt like some Game of thrones shit.
ngl its giving the Hunger games: Catching Fire vibes. The whole overthrowing the capitol (government) thing
We used red to symbolise the blood of the martyrs and also as a red card to the government
and yet our dedicated commercial news agencies just say, "in other news civil disruption in Bangladesh reaches new levels." thank you for such an insightful report.
This is why news should not be able to be bought by the entertainment industry conglomerates. They are in it for the money and only the money.
At least jamuna news says the truth
They don’t want you to know your own power
In Germany the reports were rather detailed, explaining the whole bit about job allocation and this being student protests.
They scared the people would take notice of their own power.
Pretty much accurate. I was a protester and death toll was so high than the media reports. I saw at least 10 dead bodies near Jatrabari in the capital Dhaka in 5th August after Hasina fled the country, whereas all of them killed by the Police and all the protester attack and killed any Policemen and set the Police Station of Jatrabari on fire. There was various reports of at least 50 on that day. The number of Death toll was so high as 2000, as the people believe and it also ignited the violence further. Anyway everyone please prey for our Bangladesh 🇧🇩
Best of luck, chaps. Try to avoid falling into a cycle of coups, or into a theocratic government.
The hardest part of a revolution is the aftermath.
@@XthegreatwhyX true
2000 deaths makes more sense. Around the 19th of July, there were news channels reporting 800 plus deaths. Then suddenly they were reporting only 150 deaths
It's obvious that there was a coverup. The real numbers are much higher for sure
I figured as much. Death tolls are very often under reported for whatever reason. Stay safe out there.
@@XthegreatwhyX Currently we are actively fighting against that, the unity our people has shown gives me hope
It is truly baffling to me. I cannot comprehend this behavior. Theyd rather watch everything collapse and rule over the ruins than relinquish their tyrannical power. These tyrants baffle me to no end.

Such is tyranny.
Power is addicting that why

You can only push people so hard before they snap and turn on the rich and powerful oppressive regime. And the Bangladesh government absolutely crossed that line many times. I wont say the people in power had it coming since im sure there were many good people that were hurt, but theres no way the government can act shocked by these developments.

Edit: Captain Ashraf Ahmed of Bangladesh army (a family friend) informed me, as per the militarys internal report, a coup occured on 3rd August , where armed officers were in support of the students.
Police ran out of rubber bullets on 16th July, and everything shot afterwards were live rounds, and live grenades were used, many thrown from helicopters, on 4th and 5th August (I have video evidence of live grenades), army personnel who shot at students and civilians are being detained by the military police.
The number of Students martyred as per the military's report : 3500+,
total number of students and civilians killed : 5500+
Total students and civilians arrested between 10th July and 4th August due to protest : 33000+

They did for the first 12 hours,
Rubber bullets, live rounds , shotgun mostly

As someone who isn't Bangladeshi but who was in the country while all of this is going on, I must say that I have truly never lived through anything like this. It really showed me the struggles that so many people go through in this country on a daily basis. I truly do wish all the best to Bangladesh and its people. It is truly a wonderful and stunning country from top to bottom.
One of the most prominent slogans of this uprising was
'Buker bhetor onek jhor
Buk petechi guli kor'
Which literally means 'There's a big storm inside our chest. We've offered up our chests, now fire at us.'
To put things into perspective, There is a video circulating on the internet where a police officer is seen showing a body of martyred protestor to the then home minister. He said and I quote 'Sir we shoot at them, one of them dies. But only that guy goes away. Their friends doesn't run sir. They keep coming at us. This is what makes us most afraid sir.'
We only had rocks, sticks and slogans against their lethal weapons but we did not give up.
A buddy of mine whose from Bengladesh whose father is still there, said that the head of the military told the Prime Minister she had 45 minutes of protection after resigning, to use that time to evacuate and get out, after that she would not have protection and be on her own.
From the rapid fire of video it seems like the military leader actually wants a democracy. Basically just being like you're leaving GTFO but protecting her so her death didn't hurt the nation further. But refusing to be used as tools of the regime.
She tried to kill the Chief also after he refused to shoot students and civilians...She said,"Kill 5000,10000..I don't care,You guys are traitors " and ordered her private security to kill him but later her son who lives in USA managed her to resign
Might be a good idea to make a disclaimer at the start of the video that reads: "The research, recording and editing of the video concluded on x date prior to the release of this video."
The more videos you make on recent events, the more your podcasts start to sound like news.
Honestly I'd take his pseudo-news over the actual news, at least he corrects himself and does follow-ups, which is more memory retention than most news programs I've seen.

Thank you for the back story. I remember Bangladesh from the seventies. I like the people. I wish them well from the USA.

Ngl, hate your countries meddling
The most oppressive Tyrant has left the country. She money laundered our taxes increasing inflation. According to a report by Bonik Barta, over the last 15 years of her rule, nearly $150 billion, equivalent to around Tk 17.6 lakh crore, was syphoned out of the country. Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina's son, received a total of TK 1 crore and 60 lakh monthly for his job as the ICT advisor of PM. Pure nepotism as no advice is that overpriced. Yet, the rest of us plebian can barely get a job. Most significantly, our country faces high levels of youth unemployment with 18 million people - almost a fifth of those aged between 18-24 in a population of 170 million people - not working or in education. Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC was the best performing bank in the country even just a decade ago. The bank surpassed all other banks in the country in various indices including abiding by the laws, serving the customers and other financial indicators. The bank was way ahead in collecting local deposits or foreign currencies due to the people’s reliability on it. But the situation started to change from 2017. Because of the government’s political decision that year, S Alam Group, close to the immediate past Awami League government, took control of the bank. Since then this business conglomerate and Nabil Group from Rajshahi have taken out Tk 500 billion through known and anonymous persons and entities in seven and a half years. The amount is one-third of the bank’s total loans. No rules were followed to withdraw this money. The process of how the money was withdrawn from the Islami Bank is akin to how controversial Prashanta Kumar (PK) Halder withdrew money from four financial institutions. Those financial organisations are now on the brink of collapse with the depositors not getting their money back. The four financial institutions under Halder’s control were Peoples Leasing and Financial Services, International Leasing and Financial Services, Finance and Investment Limited, and Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company. PK Halder was managing director of Aviva Finance and Global Islami Bank, owned by S Alam group. Salman F Rahman, one of Sheikh Hasina's trusted advisers with a ministerial rank, thrived on financial transgression by using murky politics to drive his business empire. His proximity to Hasina and her political circle helped him bend the rules at ease in the corporate world. Many familiar with Salman's wrongdoing described him as "the father of default culture" in Bangladesh. Salman's Beximco Group borrowed a colossal amount, nine times higher than Janata Bank's paid-up capital, bringing significant risks to the 2nd largest State Owned Commercial Bank (SCB) in Bangladesh. That's just one example. Beximco got its defaulted loans rescheduled on many occasions by compelling the regulators to make or amend rules. It also shielded itself from legal peril by securing court orders in its favour. "Salman F Rahman has become synonymous with a loan defaulter despite his contribution to the industrial sector," said Faruq Mainuddin, a banking sector analyst. Salman is still accused of ruining the debentures market in Bangladesh as he delayed the repayment of around Tk 100 crore in funds that he raised in the 1990s. Beximco was the first company in Bangladesh to issue debentures in the late 1990s, but it has remained a defaulter for the past 20 years. This is the main reason why the bond market in Bangladesh has not developed as the investors' first experience with bond investment was negative, which created a lasting bad impression. As Beximco was preparing to issue the country's largest sukuk to raise Tk 3,000 crore in 2021, the company's debenture default issue came to a head as a company that has already defaulted on payments cannot be allowed to issue bonds again. Public criticism by investors prompted the SEC to order the company to repay the dues. Beximco repaid the funds 15 years after the cut-off time. Salman pressurised institutional investors to park money in his company's sukuk, with some banks hesitatingly investing a low amount. So, the SEC had to extend the subscription time at least twice. Salman went as far as to "force" the central bank of Bangladesh also known as Bangladesh Bank to change rules so that banks can invest in sukuk by borrowing funds from a scheme designed only for the stock market, not for shariah-compliant bonds. Of the total Sukuk amount, 70% of the subscriptions have come from the banking industry - both private and public - followed by the corporate investor and the mutual fund, respectively. BRAC Bank Managing Director Selim RF Hussain said the entire amount raised through Sukuk is a liability of the Beximco Group, which lacks the capacity to repay. According to newspaper reports, the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed built Savanna Eco-Resort and five other companies in Bairagitol village of Gopalganj with an investment of over Tk500 crore. This huge property seems irrational in proportion to his official earnings of Tk1.85 crore during the service spanning 34 years and seven months before retiring as the 30th IGP. Yet this man was awarded the National Integrity Award 2020-21 by Hasina's government. Why? Well prior to his appointment as IGP, he served as the Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from January 2015 to April 2020. The Guardian has said the battalion has been accused by human rights activists of being a "death squad" responsible for more than 1,000 extra-judicial killings since it was established in 2004. He is currently on a US sanctions list due to RAB's alleged role in forcibly disappearing citizens since December 2021. Bangladesh’s former chief of staff, retired General Aziz Ahmed was the subject of the 2021 Al Jazeera investigation All the Prime Minister’s Men, which focused on the how a criminal gang led by the general’s brother, Haris Ahmed, used police and paramilitary units to abduct rivals and earn millions in bribes. Bangladesh had termed the Al Jazeera investigative report "All the Prime Minister's Men" as "false, defamatory and a politically motivated smear campaign". Yet when he was blacklisted in May 2024, as US imposed sanctions on Ahmed and his immediate family members on allegation of his involvement in corruption. This man claimed that 2018 general elections was the calmest and most peaceful election atmosphere he has witnessed in 47 years. We are drowning in debt.

Growth of the economy is like any other country but you can't move up in life without corruption
Since you'll get heavily taxed and discriminated against due to better economic conditions,

I would not say the world is going fast, this is fairly normal speed for massive protests and such. We on the Internet are simply more connected than ever before.
I'll explain why it was so fast
1. The Government was losing is thugs and each thug institution they lost the more desperate they got.
2. Most Bangladeshi people depend on a moving market for a living so even though the curfew the people went on with their lives
Thanks for your insight and report on my country🇧🇩i have been a huge fan of yours for a while now. The people of Bangladesh are really hopeful of the new interim government and Mohammad Yunus. We are hopeful of a new free Bangladesh with real democracy and elections. Also, during this period thousands of students have taken to streets and cleaned the mess after everything and returned all looted weapons from police stations and furnitures from the prime minister's home. They even painted beautiful graffiti throughout the nation showing our unity and also beautifying our country. Students took the role of traffic controllers which led to the country being more organised than any point in its history. They even patrolled entire nights throughout the country to prevent robberies and keep the streets safe in the absence of the police. The students are real leaders who are dedicated to their country and not personal gains like most politicians here. Pray for Bangladesh and its students so that we can create a harmonious society🇧🇩❤️

A lot of parties have student wings. Young people are easy to manipulate, a feeling of invincibility, and a desire for change. But no movement is truly started by them. Somebody is always pulling the strings.
They go to school and who is teaching them what?
The gov itself was clearly bad. But the students were also being manipulated by a bad force.
I dont expect much from this unless elders get involved. Time will tell. But it wont be ignorant students that create stability.
Bangladeshi here. Everything didn't stem from the recent quota movement, but from the BDR mutiny a few years ago, and the conspiracy behind it.
Did WW2 just start because Germany invaded Poland? Or was the invasion itself incited by the political movements in Germany back then, stemming from reasons including the treaty of Versailles?
Little it is that we ponder, and little do we remember.
I remember the BDR mutiny happening. Although I was very young back then and didn't really know or cared much about the world
It blows my mind that i havent heard about any of this on the news until i watched this channel.
I am from Bangladesh and what many people don't know is that Sheikh mujib (the founding father of Bangladesh) was a dictator too who banned voting, media, private property and caused 1974 famine in which 2 million people died. We call that bakshali era. That's why in 1975 he was coup'd by army who cane to power and were rewarded by succesive governments. Most of our elders know mujib's real story but today's generation don't even know Those who killed mujib and distributed sweets were all freedom fighters as well but this awamileague party makes it look like awamileague is the only freedom party which is ironic. Also this awamileague party was backed by India so that India can control Bangladesh from within.

they caught the former Prime Minister's private industry and investment adviser 2 days ago. this dude has been a politician since I was a kid (I'm 32). I have never seen this dude without heavy beard, white hair and religious garb. they found him pretending to be a hindu priest fully shaved and dyed hair
Our country was also run like a police state with brutality unmatched in the region. The only reason this revolution succeeded was because of our students indomitable will .
The problem with the US is that it's students have been conditioned so perfectly that they get cognitive dissonance even thinking about revolution. Every single state apparatus works to make sure students never have enough energy to even think about revolution . Student debt , Destroying Unity , Misrepresentation by media everything works together to quell the sparks of revolution.
bro, you researched good.. now, you should watch some Indian media on Bangladesh protest...you will shock then you realise what kind of evilness we Bangladeshis has to suffer....❤
I'm glad to see that a student movement wasn't taken over by an opportunist like Iran's sixty years ago
Thank you for a mostly accurate breakdown.
Ngl i was critical of your last video and one of my friends was asking me was those all the situation at that time then watching your video i felt kind of disappointed so i was again ready to get that same, ngl it was actually a good summary i like this. Thanks for the genuine information as much as you had i believe. unlike some other people that are trying to do suddenly thinking it is was something out of the blue thing of baseless analysis blah blah, but i am genuinely impressed with this.
Wow.
That escalated quickly.
The cops were checking our phones for protest related stuff. VPNs were also banned. And if they caught u with something, u get a free ride to jail.
So this guy was stopped by cops & they looked through his phone. There was nothing except a VPN app installed. The cop asked what he needs the VPN for. This guy said, "Oh, nothing. I just watch p0rns sometimes."
The cop went, "You know, you can watch p0rns without a VPN." 💀
great lil video as always. keep up the good work. also ty for being u. ; < )
This video is very informative and to the point, this video would have been more fascinating if you added the crime scene and the movement video
Nicely summarized. Thanks
You rock man. Love your content!
Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast.
thanks for portraying the reality of the situation
Very nice video! On totally different subject, can you make a full video or a short on Amedeo Guillet?
Thank you for depicting the recent Bangladesh revolution in pretty much an accurate way.
Indian government had invested on Sk. Hasina instead of the people of Bangladesh. One can easily understand from your factual report how of tyrant ruler Sk. Hasina was.
Once again, thanks a lot
see, russia, this is how you liberate yourself from a tyrant...
Black october was Russia's tiannamen square incident. These times of political unrest seems to have a climax of total crackdown or revolution.
Russians are not politically active.
As long as they do their bit and keep their heads down, they get some level of prosperity. They have "outsourced" the job of politics to Putin and his ilk. Most people don't expect any major advancement in their lives, they don't expect to become very wealthy, they just won't see the horrors of the 90s again.
In all, they just know to sing when asked to sing, and do the bare minimum to not stand out anywhere, and most importantly - shut up.
Bangladesh on the other hand was politically active, and they have demography on their side.
Bangladesh has more people than Russia. (That itself shocks me)
Bangladesh also has a lot of young people. Russia's young people were dwindling, and then too so many were sacrificed in Ukraine for nothing.
Its not going to happen anytime soon.
The one in 1993?
Ah yes, you wanted to support a mix of Red and Browns against Yeltsin, eh?
@@rustomkanishkawe had young students with literally just sticks and stones. Russia has a military trained young population that has experienced war.
False
Their so-called tyrant doesn't order shoot on site.
And didn't launder 93 billion 760 million dollars
Me as a Bangladeshi: "We win these"

She was a dictator. We were deprived of our rights to vote for over a decade. It's not the first time she cracked down brutally on protestors. Check out 2013 May 5 for more insights
6:40 fun fact, if you watch the video where they said this statement (it was televised) you would see MANY wrong things.
Firstly, Nahid Islam had a newspaper on his lap, trying to hide the fact that he was wearing a lungi (its basically a skirt, no its not gey its like how scottish people wear the kilt) he was wearing lungi because the injuries on his legs that he got via torture from the detective branch was so bad that he couldnt wear pants.
Secondly, one of the other coordinators was tapping his foot oddly during the statement, turns out he was using morse code to spell out "HTS", or "Help The Students"
Thirdly (idk if this is true or not) apparently people could see the police pointing guns at the coordinators from a TV screen behind them.
While I hope for the best, I doubt this is anywhere near over.
It's a pretty bad sign when the mobs hacking people into bits are the supposed "good guys" of the story...
Thanks for making this video. Love from Bangladesh.
Some facts are off, some crucial details are missed. Still, you are very close to actual facts, unlike Indian propaganda.
Dude great coverage, but I would like to have a conversation with you as a person from Bd. Also good effort on trying to pronounce some of the words
Very well explained.
Excited to watch this!
Well done for true information.
Damn you should do Game of Throne : Thailand at some point
I was waiting for this video 😅
You should try and get someone like Ryan Macbeth or Preston Stewart on the podcast. I think that would be interesting.

Center it around Rojava and we're set. They're the cleanest guys out there compared to FSA or even SAA.

Thanks for uploading this. Now that dr yunus is in charge we are hopeful for a better future.....
12:30 they were on hunger strike in Detective Branch for 32 hours. That's why they were released faster.
