    Ultraviolet light is the band of energy just above the violet end of the visible light spectrum. There are many commercial uses for UV light, such as water and air purification, counterfeit money and artwork detectors, lighting effects, sun tanning booths, and even forensics.
    UV light also has effects on human health, both positive and negative. Although a small amount of ultraviolet light can be good for you (it creates vitamin D and serotonin) excessive exposure can lead to eye damage, sunburns, and even skin cancer.
    Today in the workshop we will look at UV light and see how to create it and how to accurately measure it. We’ll learn how to safely use UV light and we’ll also have some fun seeing how common household objects fluoresce under ultraviolet light.
    We will then take our knowledge and construct a very accurate UV Index Meter that you can use to measure the amount of ultraviolet light that you are being exposed to. There are actually two versions, a basic one that just measures UV index and a more advanced design that also displays temperature and humidity.

    As the only way to accurately test our Arduino UV Index Meter is to expose it to sunshine this is a rare episode of the DroneBot Workshop in that I needed to actually take the project outdoors! Thanks to my UV Index Meter I didn’t get a sunburn doing it.
    BTW, our UV Index Meter uses an LCD display. While this works great and is very easy to use I actually am looking at an even better display that would work great with this sensor. So if you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet please do, that way you’ll be among the first to know when I release new videos.

    Thank you for the comprehensive article on your blog. I had already seen the video, but the detail in the article truly imparts a level of understanding that a UA-cam video never could (and possibly wouldn't be appropriate in that format anyway).
    In particular thank you for the explanation of Arduino's analog reference. I probably would utilize the SI1145 for UV sensing but I can think of many circumstances were the analog reference information would be a boon when the source being measured was low voltage.

    I've always wondered how you are able to record the whole sections where you talk to the camera is a single take. I'm guessing it's a combo of a teleprompter, great scripting, knowing your material and simply being awesome. Really enjoy your very detailed videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    The ultraviolet light:
    UV index 1 to 2, low
    UV index 3 to 5, moderate
    UV index 6 to 7, high
    UV index 8 to 10, especially high
    UV index 11+, extreme

    I'll try this. I live in tropical Far North Queensland, Australia; today's UV index is 12, despite the spring subsolar point being over 2 months in the future. It will be interesting to see what accuracy I get at the higher end of the range.

    Sorry for the delay with which I watched this video, I did not have the necessary conditions to give you all the attention it deserves.
    Great video as always: you are clear in explanations and understandable in speaking. despite being Italian, I almost do not need to use subtitles (although I still activate them as "parachutes") Congratulations.
    One thing came to my mind: maybe it works maybe not:
    if you put a display 16 for 4 and in the settings write 16,3 or 16,5 do you get a line scroll? or just a complete malfunction?
    P.S. I can not register ... I already registered a few months ago :-)

    Suggested correction: Most people can see some UVA, but the sensitivity of the human eye is much lower than the "normal" light range. Thus the only time most people can see UVA is in a dark room where UVA is the main light source. Some people, like myself, have abnormal eye sight and can see UVB, again at much lower sensitivity. In my case the trade off is the loss of part of the red spectrum. There are some people that can see IR.

    29:10 Earlier you mentioned that the SI1145 uses IR and Visible light to calculate the UV. When your using the LEDs at 29:10, what is causing the much higher readings? Is the visible portion of the ~400nm LED bright enough to create these readings, or is the concept of "visible light" a bit more fluid than intuition may imply?
    Perhaps an explanation of why I'm asking would clarify. I am experimenting with dry film photoresist. Unfortunately I was ignorant of the specificity of UV wavelengths called for with most UV sensitive media. I went to the trouble of building a small UV led light using ×84, ~400nm LEDs. Shortly thereafter I discovered the 365-370nm specification. I did a few transparency exposures with the light and discovered that it does infact activate the film. Due to other factors in dialing in my process I switched to using direct sunlight on cloudless days between 12pm and 4pm with an exposure timer in order to get slightly more consistent results with a known broad spectrum UV source. I live just off the west coast of the US, South of Los Angeles so a clear day involves fairly consistent atmospheric conditions day to day. In the future, after I completely dial in my chemistry and process, I'm interested in characterizing the differences between a solar exposure versus a ~400mn UV LED exposure. I want to do these experiments before rejecting my completed light project entirely and building another. I would rather source a sensor to measure and qualify my results instead of just maintaining a subjective log with products and findings. This task does not seem well suited to a sensor that is designed to indirectly calculate UV light, however your demonstration at 29:10 causes me to question that assumption. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions regarding my future experiment? It's on my list of things to get to eventually but I haven't explored sensors or techniques much at all yet. During your research for this upload, have you noticed any other sensors I should look into for sensing light of a more specific wavelength?
    Also I'm not exactly sure of the science behind the wavelength specificity of both UV LEDs or UV sensitive dry film photoresist. I don't know if you have any insights here or any references I might be able to look into for more information. I haven't found very many reliable sources for this application. Most sources are quite subjective in nature.

    I always enjoy to watch your Vlog!
    From the standpoint of an long-time Lightingdesigner for shows, it is right on the spot what you are telling us about light!
    My Question is:
    You print out a value for visible light. Does the measurement outputs in Lux (lx)?
    Since 1lx equals 1 Lumens per square-meter, the value (268) lux... ahm... looks like it is actually lux.
    268lx is in fact a near perfect value for workspaces. In middle Europe, the norm-value for architectural lighting in offices is 300lx for writing tables.
    So, lx in real life is a intensity-to-areal-measurement!
    If it really outputs lx, then wow! A professional lx-meter is very expansive!
    Ask me... ;)

    How would you program the SI1145 to read, measure and display in MicroWatts rather than in NanoMeters?

    Please note that the Arduino Mega does not have internal analog reference voltages. I got bitten by this and it took a while to figure out why I was not getting valid readings with a Mega. You must use the AREF pin and the command to use that as a reference.

    Do any of these sensors or any other sensors around would be capable of measuring Luminescence too? As in marking a wooden ruler with UV ink for example and then passing it under the sensor with uv light which will cause the uv markings to release photons everytime it hits an index mark? Thanks very much.

    I wonder what UV is being put out from those, "bad batch from the vendor", violet colored street lights throughout the states. Cities/county's have claimed, defective bulbs, a class action against the vendor etc, but.......as far as here in South texas, by & large, they are not relamping those, "defective", lights with properly working bulbs. We're talking major intersections, too.....you know, where safety is key?

    I was wondering if there is any way to detect the intensity of just the UVB range. I am a little baffled by the UV scale. It would seem quite inaccurate not seperating the UVA and UVB. It is my understanding that the UVA intensity is fairly constant throughout most of the day while the UVB intensity is mostly during the mid day. Also it is my understanding that most of the UVB rays are gone for basically of 8 months of the year for most of the USA. I personally would like to quantify the UVB intensity throughout the day, throughout the years for the Vitamin D and serotonin production.

    Dear Sir, I tried to measure if my LED flashlight on my IPhone emit some UV and I used cheap UV meter and I put flashlight very close to sensor and It read number 11. I would ask You if it is possible to explain me this. Is it depends on type sensor an it read only IR radiation and “fooled” sensor? Or what happened exactly? I am afraid cos I used my flashlight on daily basis.

    How do the libraries know the I2C addresses of the two sensors? If most devices are using 7 bit addressing and there are 112 possible slaves and the I2C commitee assigns a device ID, then there can only exist 112 possible device classes worldwide! I don't believe that. Also, how would you connect two sensors of the same class to an I2C bus if they share the same address? This would be not possible.
    BTW, aren't the words Master/Slave forbidden now because of this BlackLivesMatter thing?

    Ugh... The title says Arduino UV Index Meter. It does NOT say "what is ultraviolet?". Nor does it say, "How UV is used" or "Types of UV lamps" OR "experiments with UV". If you're going to do FIFTEEN minutes on other things, PLEASE tell us in advance and provide a "Get to it already!" link.
