    The most incredible thing to me is that the guy who fell 185 feet somehow managed to not slam into, or get slammed by, a part of the bridge.

    • @Quahogger

      Even falling 185 feet would kill most people. You’d probably hit the water at 60 mph. Unbelievably he survived.

    • @PhilLesh69
      @PhilLesh69 Місяць тому +38

      That's because he didn't fall 185 feet straight down unimpeded. He rode a massive object into the water. That object didn't free fall, either. Some parts swung down, more than they fell.

    With all these stories out there, let’s keep in mind it’s about these 6 men who lost their lives and their families and the first responders who risked their lives each day to save others. I am here In Baltimore and have driven on that bridge hundreds of times, I have been a firefighter for over 20 years and can’t imagine running that call. In the mid 1960s, we lived in Northern N Jersey and one of our dear friends / neighbors was a family whose father was a manager at Sea Land who helped invent the container shipping cargo system in the 1950s / 60s. His son (my bestie friend from those days) also ended up in a similar capacity in the shipping biz, prior to retiring a few yrs. ago. I bet the elder dad probably didn't envision how big these loads would become; I haven't been in touch w/ his son for years, so I have no way to get his "take" on all these issues.

I imagine the harbor tunnel at 95 probably has been demage but nobody talk about it. This was like an earthquake magnitud around our neighborhood also 895 tunnel structure probably has beeen demage by the force of the impact. I hope transport Administration can inspect this tunnels.

    No bridge dolphin protection They would of saved the bridge. According to the AASHTO bridge design specifications, a dolphin is a protective object that may have its own fender system and that is usually circular in plan and structurally independent from the bridge. Their main function is to protect adjacent structures from the impact of a vessel.

    • @Thaumazzar
      @Thaumazzar Місяць тому

      This is gonna be tricky I think, because a lot of those marine heavy lift cranes if you look at them are for lifting things up from underwater, and they straddle the load because it's usually underwater. Lifting heavy, from one side, in the water is much harder to do because it causes the crane boat to flip. They need a crane/oil derrick that can sink to the bottom for more support.

    I cannot understand how cruise liners and in this case, this massive cargo ship loaded with 10,000, 200ft long containers are allowed to maneuver into and out of the port without the help of tugboats???
    How come no thoughts about this from journalism and people managing the Baltimore ports.

      That port and many others have specialist pilots who drive boats in and out of the harbor. The problem here doesn’t appear to be that particular local pilot, it’s that the ship lost power, possibly twice, at a critical steering moment. From what has been released from the investigation, they called out for tugboat help once steering was compromised but it all happened in a few minutes time.

      As far as I know about ships, the answer to that is a *sort of* yes. They have backup power for smaller systems, like communications, lights, reduced steering, etc - but if the cathedral engines that power the propellers go out, there's not usually backup engines to keep them turning.

      @@goobernoodles Yeah, that's true, too. I'm just a hobbyist who takes a lot of interest in ships, so don't quote me, of course, but my guess as to what happened her was that the ship's engines failed somehow, and because there was a converging channel to the starboard side, the ship started to veer to the right and wasn't able to course-correct. Given how small the margin of error that was allowed by the bridge for passing ships, just a few degrees of uncontrolled turn would have been more than enough.

    Why the USA don't get one of the world's largest ship cranes equipped to lift the broken pieces of the bridge rather than the tedious task of cutting it into pieces. This job would have been completed days ago. The USA could use Heavy duty Lifting Vessels like the HLV Svanen(8700 tonnes, the SSCV Thialf Dutch Vessel with a lifting capacity of 14,200 metric tons, or the Chinese Zhen Hua 30 with a lifting capacity of 7,700 metric tons. There are cranes that can fit the scope of this job and complete the job in a short time.
