Top five lifers is a tough one!! But here are some of my most memorable.
5) Red Cockaded Woodpecker: Saw them on an awesome birding trip and they were the last Florida woodpecker I needed.
4) Toco Toucan. Love toucans so it was amazing to finally see one. Then I saw a few others.
3) Guianan Cock of the Rock. Seeing this beautiful bird was a transcendent experience.
2) Jamaican Tody. One of my favorite birds since seeing it in James Bond's Birds of the West Indies as a kid. Finally seeing this tiny, beautiful bird flitting around was a thrill.
1) St. Lucia Oriole. Local nemesis bird, I saw it unexpectedly after years of trying and nothing prepared me for how pretty and striking it was.
Congratulations on reaching 300 🎉. That's a cool bird to get there with. Continue the great work on the channel, and here's to bird #400.
What an awesome list you have there! I would love to see any tody species someday! They are such adorable birds. Thanks so much for your support! 400 coming soon!
I got the vermillion flycatcher in Cerritos Ca a few years back. It actually was around for a few days, incredible😱
Great content young man👍
Congratulations on your 300th bird! I recently saw a solitary sandpiper at a lake which is a lifer for me.
Thank you!! Congrats on your Solitary Sandpiper lifer! That's awesome!
Congratulations on getting to 300! The Black Swift and Lewis' Woodpecker are nice birds to round that number off.
Thanks!! Yeah, I feel like it was a good couple of birds to hit 300 haha.
Congrats on 300 (and seeing two in one day to boot)!
Since I rarely twitch/chase birds, most of my lifers are ones I just happen to come across, and it's even better if I didn't know of the species' existence until I saw it. Without recounting each individual story in full, my top five lifer encounters/species are probably:
5) ruddy duck (dude just showed up at my local pond one morning last fall and hung out throughout the winter; I called him Ruddy Man)
4) pileated woodpecker (saw it feeding near a residential area after having done a nearly 2-hour walk through the woods)
3) Atlantic puffin (a pleasant surprise when I was working in Maine because they don't normally go as far south as I was based)
2) common raven (screaming at me in a parking lot in Arizona, then flew right in front of me; its size was shocking)
1) yellow-crowned night-heron (a pair of juveniles to boot, so definitely I didn't know what they were; I was racking my brain the entire time while freaking out about seeing these strange large birds lurking near me)
Honorable mentions go to the northern gannet, common loon, and ruby-throated hummingbird in Maine, a local common nighthawk last spring, and the pair of American woodcocks my friend showed me in the middle of NYC (and not Central Park!).
Thanks I appreciate that!
Also, what an awesome list! Thanks for taking the time to do that! Honestly, local lifers are much more enjoyable than a super far chase!
Just need 9 more birds and I’m on 150! I’d say that’s pretty good for only a year of being into birding
Absolutely!! Im just getting into it myself, about two summers now, I've got 181! ❤ Happy birding!!
Congrats on the 300! The Lewis' is really pretty and swifts/swallows are always so difficult to get on camera
Hi, good morning. You mentioned the Black Swift. In Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR, near and around the area we live, there are the seasonal Pacific Swifts zooming back and forth catching insects on the wing.
Ugh so jealous I was hoping to get a Lewis’s this past weekend camping. Great find!
Saw Pat had a big camera does he have instagram or UA-cam or another social media?
Haha I can send you the coordinates. Pat does not currently have any bird-related socials, however when he starts one I promised I would shout him out!
Congrats to the brambling👍. In sweden there can be sometimes tousands of bramblings there i live immigrating south to europe in autumn season.
It’s strange and weird to see you driving around Utah and wearing different outfits, both winter outfits and summer outfits. 🤣😆😁
Congrats on 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣! I remembered all your top 5. 😊
Thank you! And wow that means a lot haha. Thanks for joining me on all of my adventures 😊
