Thank you so much for doing these, Dr. Tan. This is my favorite format of recap, aka deeper explanation/teaching session! I love learning from you and appreciate how you demonstrate and promote kindness, especially in the comments. I'm a pediatrician and enjoy bonding with teenage patients over Alone, and I direct fans to your channel. I think encouraging voices like yours, Woniya also comes to mind, are so helpful for teens struggling with loneliness in the midst of social media overload. Keep up the good work!
That’s awesome! Yes I love that your patients know of the show! I think going out and learning survival skills can bring so much confidence and self worth to our youth
Great review! So much great insight! 1 trot line was permitted 1 net was permitted I fried the filets on the skillet Smoked all the carcasses and many filets and boiled most of the fish heads. Also had 3 grouse at this point.
Luke Olsen: Do I understand this correctly that you are only allowed to have 1 gilnet in the water? So it would be illegal to use multiple gilnets in different places at the same time?! By the way, it is realy great that you took part in the show. I have your father's book now for about 30 years, it was one of my first books about survival (the second book to be correct). I hope you won, that would be great!
Luke Olsen: Thank you very much for your answer. That is very interesting! I have always wondered why they did not use several seperate gilnets at different spots. Now i have an explanation. May i ask an second question? Was there an regulation for the size of the net? Or could you use only one gilnet, but this could be of any size ?
@kevinhart46 not allowed, what you see on the show is just a tiny part of the game play. Your best to just assume that all of the contestants have thought through all the options carefully to come to those conclusions of gear and their uses.
I'm glad you noticed Cade's quiver. When I saw it I thought I was imagining things. There is always some level of editorial trickery going on in this show and I respect that. The showrunners have to create engaging storylines with footage shot by completely inexperienced camera men/ women, without interfering, so I bet a lot of that footage is unusable. But that shot of Cade's quiver back on his bow? I don't know man. It generates so many questions for the audience. Like, did he actually lose his arrows? Maybe he allready found them again, but they want to keep that moment for future episodes? Or was this just some fake drama? Why would they edit it like this with these obvious continuation flaws? If people are doubting the reallity of the events in the show, they need to avoid irregularities like this and just show the events in the way they took place. And how lucky was that region in Saskatchewan(!!) that the well experienced hunter/outdoorsman, who somehow started a forrest fire, also happened to have found a large bucket to stop it in time? It's probably me reading too much Reddit. But, along with Alone,Australia's entire season, with random animals just walking by, caught with bare hands all off camera and some other clear instances of studio dubbing, this is another episode of the original Alone, where i feel they overdid it with the editing and the drama. Please Doc, set my mind at ease and tell me I'm just being paranoid and that they never ask candidates to do or don't do certain things?
@@jjjjjjjjj3000 "Unfairly undermining their relationship with the audience" I like that, that's well put. I'm glad we share the same sentiments. Just like you said; "I want to trust". And I do, but at times they do make it hard to fully trust that what they showed actually happened the way they showed it. Dispite me being critical I still think it's the best damn reallity show on this subject. And it is the only reality show I watch. And we can't forget that it's a reallity show first, survival show second so I give them a lot of leeway in the editing department, but they're starting to overdo it.
Haha all reasonable doubts. I will say the sequence of events may be out of time and they definitely use voiceover to help move a story line in a particular direction. I believe that cade found a bucket which was really lucky. We’ve seen people find all sorts of things and being near a lodge, it wouldn’t surprise me that a bucket was left behind or washed up on the shore. I don’t think the contestants are doing anything tricky just to get more air time, it’s just a lot to edit and production needs to find a story line that makes sense and creates drama.
Yea it’s definitely hard to trust when you see inconsistencies. For the quiver, I believe the bottom fell off first so the arrows were dangling from their points and fell out at different times. Cade is experienced but may have bought a new setup due to shows specifications on bows
No cedar in Saskatchewan. Spruce, Pine, Birch, Balsam Fir, and Poplar is all we have for larger trees. Edit: I should add that in southern Saskatchewan they also have some Lodgepole Pine and Cottonwood. Both very rare though.
Strange that I am subscribed to your channel, with all notifications selected, but do not get notified. I kept checking your channel under “Live”, but the video didn’t show up there.
I totally agree with what you say about being with bats and rabies. My work colleague’s young son died from a bite from a bat during the night in a cottage where they stayed. He had a tiny bite and thought it was nothing. This was in Qc, Canada. Once the symptoms started, they couldn’t save him. It was a terrible death. I have a degree as a wildlife technician and I assure you don’t mess with bats because they are one of the top rabies carriers. The USA CDC has plenty of info in the subject.
That’s very sad to see someone go like that. I just had a case of possible rabies exposure from a raccoon bite. Yes there are vaccines that you need but theres also an immune globulin that binds that virus that we inject into and around the wound
Is the bottom half of Cade's quiver still attached too? Giving the benefit of the doubt, maybe he lost the bottom half of his quiver along with the arrows, and the top portion of the quiver stayed attached. Edit to add: Could Cade have watched through footage he filmed to see where he lost them?
Yea there is a discrepancy but that may be related to production timeline errors in post production editing. Also if he’s talking about anything that hasn’t been screened yet, that needs to be taken off per his NDA
I'm guessing you haven't made a video for episode 4 yet but I have a medical Question. It may have been covered before considering Giardia seems to be fairly common in these situations. What is a treatment that would be available to treat Giardia? Thanks for your time and thanks for the great videos!
I was wondering - is there anything medically proactive that can be done for giardia? Like can you get "vaccinated" against it, for lack of a better term? It seemed like Juan Pablo relied on some natural built-up resistance - how does that work, and could it be medically accelerated/replicated in some way? (Like could you build up resistance before you're dropped in the field?)
@@FlapjackMcGee I was doing some research on giardia. I thought it was a protozoa but what I read said it was a bacteria. I don't believe you can get a vaccine for it. Good gut health (healthy bacteria) and your body's immunity would would be your defense. Juan Pablo also said he was used to drinking that type of water which would build his natural immunity to it.
So far I've seen a lot of rookie mistakes at Reindeer Lake like drinking Lake water without boiling it first. Not anchoring a gill net to something solid, leaving smoked fish out where a 4 footed predator can steal it, Leaving fish in a puddle overnight rather than cleaning and cooking it right away ? 20 days spent building a huge log structure by at least 3 contestants and nearly starving in the process and then crapping out the next day ? Failing to mark your trail to find your way back to camp ? Use that Orange Parachute Cord ! Lost arrows and a quiver ? All Rookie mistakes. Everyone gets lost Once then you learn the hard way what not to do ! FYI - Do not tangle with the Forest Creatures ! They all have claws and teeth !
@@SurvivalDoctors But shouldn't these lessons be already learned prior to coming on the show? One would have thought that even watching through all the past seasons would have gained every viewer enough cognitive understanding before they even hot the woods. And these contestants are supposed to be experts? Or maybe their selection criteria was intentionally lowered to make them more relatable to everyday Joes/Janes? But who wants to watch and follow rookies who makes more mistakes than the viewers?
Dd anyone see those lights in the sky during the shot of the sky through trees when Alan was inside his shelter while the Otter stole his fish? Was that a ufo?? lol but really though!
I guess after 10 seasons, every novelty has been expended to feature anything new in survival situations that they have to resort to dumbing down to silly mistakes to maintain viewership. What would make the show more varied would be to go to places tropical places rather than starving contests in the cold. But then, there are more critters that would kill you in hot and humid climates. Dr Tan, if there is a location you could suggest for an All-star gathering, where would that be?
Hey! To be honest, if you take a lot of these contestants and allow them 10 items and a full gear list in a tropical climate, they would just live there. If you go to an area where food is abundant and freezing is not a possibility, you would have to take away item choices to ensure it doesn’t go on forever and have an end point (Ex 100 days. I think 30 days would be too short and you’d get multiple winners). You might be interested in naked and afraid, they often film with a crew in a hot climate with less tools
