Re-Greasing Ceiling Fan Bearings

I wanted to try, and see whether adding new grease to old ceiling fan bearings can make the fan quiet again as a new set of bearings cost about the same to what I paid for this second hand ceiling fan. This is my 4th time working on Chinese ceiling fan bearings, in which the first 3 attempts all lead to a motor failure, which is why I had to use extra precaution on this one as I really want to preserve the original windings(and not pay the cost to get it rewound).
In the first 3 attempts, I hammered a flathead screwdriver into the gap between the lower, and upper motor shell. The second attempt failed at this stage, when I accidentally hammer the screwdriver hard into the windings. The first, and third attempt failed because I wasn't careful enough at handling the stator once they're out of the motor shells. This time, I screwed 3 long bolts into the blade mounts, and tighten them with the help of a wrench. It pushes the 2 motor shells apart, revealing the windings, and rotor.
I wasn't surprised at all when I saw a set of unsealed bearings under the motor shells. Most, if not all cheaply made Chinese ceiling fans don't provide seals on the bearings to cut cost. With no seals to penetrate, I immediately went to town, and fill the bearing cavities with goopy, sticky grease, which hopefully will last 15 or more years. Reassembly was a bit harder than I anticipated, but it was nothing I couldn't tackle.
The end result is not as good as I'd hoped. Most likely because I didn't get rid of the old grease packed with impurities. But a bit of the whizzing dry bearing sound is gone, so that's something. Oh and, don't worry about the scratches on the paint. The old paint is all gonna be stripped off anyways.

Ball bearings are pretty much disposable. Seems like it’s difficult to rejuvenate them to the original, factory smoothness. I never thought about using a syringe to apply grease, though I haven’t had the need to do that yet. That’s definitely great idea!

It was actually from a car repair shop I always go to where I learn how to reuse old bearings. Old bearings can be greased up, and put into service again if little, to no damage is found on the ball guides, and bearing walls. They first use brake parts cleaner to flush out the old grease, then pack the bearing up with a bunch of new grease. I came up with the syringe method myself as I didn't want to make a huge mess in my shop, plus buying a grease gun would be too costly.

@@TheFanUniverse thank you,i think it will work for my fan,i gave it singer oil,it did quiet down abit after running it for about 3 days after oiling,i only got to oil the top bearing,will see how long it lasts,its a big childwood fan of mine,if it starts making big noises again i will try open it like you did,thanks again

Its made in 1991 and i bought it brand new out the box,i knew ball bearings only have a 5 year shelf life,so thats probably why the bearings are so dry

Thanks! I didn't have the proper chemicals to clean off the old grease + dirt mix, so that's all I can manage for now. Maybe I'll get some brake cleaner in the future, and try this method again.

Man greasing is so much easier then oiling. Grease once and it will last for another 10 years. I used automotive nissan approved on my pak fan causd that thing only has sleeves and no bearings 😒 the quality of things these days are getting worse each year

True, but in most situations, just a simple drop of oil is what a bushing fan only needs. I found that grease sometimes add friction to the shaft for months after application. I do have to agree with the quality drop though.

@@TheFanUniverse ik what you mean by friction gain. When I put it on my fan, it was running slower for a few days and the spin down was quick but after that it runs even better then new.
