The shape of the coin is interesting as the diameter at any point is the same, thus allowing it to go into slot machines without rattling. the point on each to the sides is the centre of the curve of the opposite side of the coin. This shape is also used on the 50p coin for the same reason.

They work in machines with no problem at all. One of the reasons they are made the way they are is to make easier for those who are blind to sort their coins. There is only one coin that is worth more than normal 20p's that is the (afaik) undated 2008. The only coins in everyday use in the UK that are worth more than face are some 50p's and £2 coins.
