- Social media accountability and transparency activist Frances Haugen joins Bill to discuss "TikTok Brain" and other dangers affecting young technology users.
This is great stuff. I’m gona follow her on TikTok.
It's not just young people. Everyone, including seniors, that use FB, Twitter, IG, and YT, have a severely reduced attention span, compared to how they used to be. When I'm watching a film on cable, I have a hard time not surfing the internet on my laptop at the same time, and I'm a senior, and I don't even own a hand held god, only a laptop.
Yeah, my mom is 82, and she can't watch a whole 30 minute tv show without scrolling on Facebook the whole time. Reduced attention span can accelerate dementia, so I'm trying really hard to lead by example. I never had a Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat or Instagram account, and I deactivated my Facebook account over two years ago. This is about the extent of my social media right here. She's cut down on Facebook after she goes to her room at night, but she's still on it constantly during the day.
If people look for validation in real life and fail, perhaps the Internet is another chance for validation of feelings, self, judgement and more. If you are confident, you don't need it. However, youngsters need confidence. That is part of the problem. As a parent of 2 girls, one having a phone and one not old enough for a cell phone, I hope that I enable them to have the confidence they need ,strength and elasticity of character to bounce back from whatever social media and life does to them.
Tiktok is to the internet what the Jerry Springer Show was to television
I'm 29 I can only use 1 min at a time
I have never used TikTok intentionally. I have had videos or whatever link to it and try to drag me in, but i break away. But now youtube, FB, all now have "Shorts" or versions of TikTok. We need a mandatory go out and go camping in the sticks twice a year mandate. It forces families to leave behind the internet tech and just live a few days with nature. Yeesh!
Both of them miss the biggest issue with communities like Tiktok, Twitter, Instagram and even UA-cam. They all incentivize being an asshole and not showing respect.
Everyone on these platforms is competing for likes, and what gets the most likes is making a tiktok about how horrible everyone is, tweeting a savage clapback to someone, posting a hilarious comment bullying someone.
At first for a lot it's a personality they're playing up, but eventually that stuff sears your soul, man.
if you can't afford to say "no" to a job you don't want, you're not free.
let's make sure everyone is free by ensuring they have a guaranteed minimum income of $1,500ish USD/month. the Universal Basic Income. 252
Wow! That was certainly on topic.
All social media rewards the attention whores and bullies. What's pathetic is "news programs" like GMA , Today, etc glamorize these people by giving them even MORE unnecessary and unwarranted attention.
Great end to the clip.
By safety...she means censorship
The cure for social media is reading a book without pictures and more than 150 pages.
If you try to watch a video on basic tv/cable, most streaming platforms (including UA-cam) or just try to sit silently in your house to read a book, you are barraged by ads in ranges of 2-6 mins, daily, and you have been for years.
Surprise--you've got ADHD and social anxiety, plus a mind that can't concentrate for anything longer than a music video or an Onion headline.
She is the type of person who would have gone after radio or TV when they came out. The medium isn't the issue. Its the people....involved. take responsibility.
"The Power Of One“ was a good movie from 1992.
So i have colleagues at work, at the age of 35-40 ish, they can t watch a whole movie, also watch regular youtube video at 2X or even 3X....this is happening in romania, don t think it s only trnding over there...
She gets the chance to get on Bill Maher and she wears beat up Chuck T's? Seriously?
Is.... is she gonna talk? I feel like Bill had to fill in so much empty noise
Felt the same way, she seemed to lack any charisma or be aware that she had a 5 min interview slot to fill and make interesting.
No wonder companies are so hell bent on developing AI - they cannot trust people to pay attention in their jobs. Doesn't bode well for those employed in providing critical services if they feel the need to constantly focus on something else. Almost as bad as heroin addiction.
I get a headache after spending 8 hours in front of the computer at work and am forced to catch my news online. It does feel nice to read an actual/physical book once in a while.
Is there a measure of the amount of lead allowed in toys for Chinese children?
Yes, but they often do not follow the FDA. They WANT us to give our children lead.
It is their long term global solution.

I can't focus on a book anymore and I don't watch tic tok.. my daughter is full of new 'mental issues' still can read so that's good. UA-cam is full of crap though.. I just watch news.. but if you look at my daughters crap.. 🙄
Adults discuss TikTok...... A child's medium..... Who's using that over 30? And why?
In Bangladesh, Facebook is internet!
She said nothing interesting, made a lot of annoying sounds, and plugged a new dating app. She’s finding a niche that she can be prominent in instead of just being a worker bee at a big company. She still has Silicon Valley in her veins.
Too short. What's her solution to the problem? Does she feel repealing social media's immunity is a solution?
What Bill doesn't get about Tinder and co. is that it takes away the pain of rejection. That's why men will always use services like this. And I guess that many women would prefer to be hit on by a stranger via smartphone than IRL, because it is safer for them. They can try to weed out the crazies before agreeing to a meeting in person.
So I think online dating is never going away again, because it's beneficial for both sides and Bill is just an old man yelling at the clouds in this case.
tinder isnt serious. only fuckboys get what they want. not good for ltr.
Most guys don’t get matches on Tinder. That’s arguably even worse than rejection because rejection is just 1 girl who might be taken, online dating is everyone in town not liking you.
You rang?
Al Gore Rhythm is funnier.
seems they always come out with a book to make money
You can't tell me with a jawline like that, she didn't go by frank at some point.
So this Millennial (or postmillennial) wrote a book about the power of one... what, a finger for scrolling faster?!.
2:10 Lol does she think 90 mins > 2 hours?
In this context it is. Bill argues people can't sit through a two-hour length movie, so not being able to sit through something of a shorter length, in this instance the example being a 90-minute piece, is more worrisome.
@@MastersOfAudiovisuality ah that makes sense. Thanks! Lol

I rolled my eyes when my Dad said Social Media would kill us all, but... man...
Glad to see you still dropping witty comments, sir 👍🏼 I remember years ago I’d see your comments on all the late night comedy show vids.
Ironic, isn't it? Boomers were sounding the alarm bells about social media years ago, and we just scoffed. Now, they're all on board - hook, line, and sinker. And falling for every obvious scam in the book. Without FB, 45 certainly never would've happened.

I started telling all my friends that when I was in high school, and they all thought I was being a bitter little jerk. Looks like I was right lol.

“People today have attention spans that can only be measured in nanoseconds.”
From the movie Baseketball. And that was in 1998!
Will somebody get this man a hotdog!?
I grew up surrounded by people that thrive on this stuff but I never bought into it. I used to think maybe there was something wrong with me, but it looks like everyone else was really just being zombified by braindead ‘entertainment’ and media.
I weep for my own generation.
Social media is a vector for mental illness. It creates an environment where it is now possible for the majority to become affected. So it is quite possible that the problem is not you.
Me too.
The previous generation had Jerry Springer. The one before that the big thing was sticks and cans.
It’s garbage turtles all the way down.
Born dead, buried alive.
In Shakespeare's time a play was a whole day event and the audience came prepared with food and drinks to get through the performance. My generation thought a movie over 2 hours was too long. Now people can't concentrate for more than a minute on Tik Tok.
You don't even need to go back as far as Shakespear. Even during the Depression everyone still found the $$ to go watch a double feature with lots of shorts, newsreels, trailers and serials for hours. Even though a lot of that was stripped out in subsequent decades you still had double features for years.
The irony is as content gets shorter, the one price model 'now get out of the theater for the next audience' paradigm has gone away and content has to be necessarily shorter, cheaper, more extensive in volume and shallower in content so people will 'stay all day'.
"Short attention span"
Attention spans correlate to IQ scores...... Some people are getting negative scores these days...

"It's basically your high school yearbook come to life."
Nailed it perfectly there
If your high school yearbook was owned by a company that could extract from your picture everything you've ever clicked on, liked, shared, commented on, all of your relatives, friends, when you are awake, where you are traveling, what your job is, how long you look at the screen, plus a thousand other data points about your existence and then your high school yearbook sold all of that data for a trillion dollars in profit so other companies could put you in a group of users to target with retail ads and political messages... then yeah... just like your high school yearbook.
Outdated though. That's what it started as, and what it was as long as you needed to have a university mail address to register an account. Now that anyone and everyone of every age is on it, it's just an extension of daily life. There's not really a line anymore: it's as much a part of your daily routine as having a coffee and reading the paper was for your grandfather. The biggest differences are now we're addicted to the dopamine rush more than the caffeine, and the paper consists of an infinite number of stories from people all over the world and ourselves loosely organized by a history of stories we previously read, pointed at, said something about, or even just zoned out on for a minute or two.
I'm still old school. I subscribe to a few posts such as Bill Maher and I leave the rest alone. I'm nearly 70 and I love my books and some steaming services and that's it.

He's not exactly wrong. They try to dumb our society, to weaken us. Better control, especially internationally. Their country wants to be one of the most powerful ones. A country is as powerful as an educated society. It's about economic. It's about politics. It's about power.
It's about to manipulate the next generation - soon to be adults!
@@marie_84
Social media doesn't dumb us down. Do you know how many youtube videos show you step by step how to fix any problems you have around your home or with your car? Videos that break down the facts of your favorite stories and shows, and help you understand new perspectives on them? That help you brush up on a certain subject you need to study for your next test? Yeah, there is plenty of junk. But even some of that is fun. The idea its making us dumber is stupid. We just have ppl who suck that are giving it a bad name. Story as old as time.
"Nevermind what their sellin',, it's what you're buyin...' -Fugazi.
This definitely needs to be talked about more. Cigarettes in Canada have people dying on the packaging, but people still buy it. I'm sure Facebook could run ads saying that people need to turn it off, but nobody will.
People say "look how poor, oppressed and ignorant people are in left wing governed countries' and yet there are millions who vote for them.
It's down to the parents to get the kids off the phones and read to them, or just stop using any electronic babysitter.....
China: Woah, there Chinese kid. You need to take a break or this'll rot your brain.
Also China: Hey everyone else, watch this till your brain rots!
Maybe that's the intent.
@@vox7350 Probably. That and the tons of money.
What China does is what China does , what the US does is often what the US chooses not to do. Take some acknowledgement of what the US is, not try to blame others for how they do things.
Slot machine is great analogy. Have you ever watched a gambler at a slot machine. Invasive!!
If you're concerned with this issue, I urge you to read 'Zucked' by Roger Namee and the Ted talks he references in the book.
Kids are on that crap all day long.
Come on! next thing you will start to ask is for the media companies to tell you when you should go to the bathroom! People should make their own decisions. Stop treating people as if they are all stupid.
This sort of rapid, always changing media is basically training our young people to have ADHD.....
I was actually wondering about this just yesterday..if the monitoring of racist and incendiary was as close and carefully done in Arabic as it is done in English. So, from this I take the answer is no..and OH BOY!

Tik tok is giving people ADHD apparently
What if they already have ADHD though?
Lack of attention should not be diagnosed as ADHD. Turn off your phone and get some work done.

Hmmm. I am on Facebook, but I'm in the Star Trek TOS group and a few others, including the group of my high school. No death threats. No bullshit conspiracies. No plots to overthrow the gov't. Oh, and a few friends and I (down to a total of 3) post our Wordle results. So it's not all evil! Oh, and Wordle is self-limiting: only one puzzle per day. Someone has to plant a seed for the evil, and FB amplifies to make their big bucks. But you don't have to go there. And it used to be UA-cam that sucked me in for hours. Not anymore -- well, once in a while! But not anywhere near daily.
Last night my kid and I were watching a film from 1939, but only the first 40 minutes, agreeing to finish it this week.
Part of it is because we hardly have e time to watch a movie. The other part is that 100 minutes is a lot of time to watch something you can freely go back to.
If people can use Facebook, they can use the internet
She said in other countries people think Facebook IS the internet. All that's posted is true and "friends" are real friends not bots, trolls or creeps. We lived in a north African country for several years. The teens and young adults were glued to their social media 24/7. Having traveled quite a bit over the last 7 years, there are people who sit together in cafes, restaurants.....and are glued to their phones, scrolling through something while completely ignoring the people they're with. The thought of disconnecting for a few hours to engage in a group or conversation horrifies them. "Houston, we have a problem."

I work with a 23 year old woman that is constantly pulling her phone out to text, scroll, check content, etc. while she is supposed to be working; she is clearly addicted to this technology.
There is the great problem of generalization. Not everyone in GenZ, including me, uses TikTok. And, I know of many who actually are conscious enough to limit their screen. I really wish that there was some data, which broke down social media usage, both based on age and country. Probably, there is.

But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.
Section 4 confirmed the legitimacy of all public debt appropriated by the Congress. It also confirmed that neither the United States nor any state would pay for the loss of slaves or debts that had been incurred by the Confederacy. For example, during the Civil War several British and French banks had lent large sums of money to the Confederacy to support its war against the Union. In Perry v. United States (1935), the Supreme Court ruled that under Section 4 voiding a United States bond "went beyond the congressional power."////////////////////
