In konkan area, we use red chilly powder instead of green chilly.
Also we mix besan and buttermilk then we add it in the pan.
Yes my mom wud do the same ,mix besan and butter milk. Such an amazing dish. Miss her cooking so much :(

Madam , I feel, U forgot the main ingredient which is Garlic in the tempering
My mom puts a lot of garlic in this and that is how I remember palak patalbhaji.
Garlic is optional. If you want you can add in tempering.
Instead of chana dal if you add sweet corn.... it's yummy
