    Most of us like seeing some green money in our hand, but green egg yolks are another story -so why do they turn green when hard boiled too long?

      The yolk turns green due to sulfur when over cooked... Never looks very appealing & always very crumbly and dry.
      By the way, did you know that American paper money is actually made out of bluejean cotton? I learned most other Nations make theirs out of a thin plastic but not the US.

      My mother hard-boils eggs weird. She boils them, then puts the lid on the pot and lets them set in the water for way too long, like 30 minutes. She was taught that the slight grey around the yolk meant that it was properly cooked.
      I have since learned that it means that it is overcooked, and I hard-boil eggs using steam until the yolk is solid. If I am going to eat it immediately I will even soft-boil it to where the yolk is still mostly liquid but piping hot. That's not really any different from sunny-side-up or over-easy when frying, probably safer.
      30 minutes is way too long, and steam is quicker than over-saturation in water.

    Hi Simon! My dad co-owned a multi-store printing business in the 80s, 90s, and 00s. One day the Secret Service showed up in his office saying that they had tracked large sums of counterfit money to one of his printing presses. They were never able to find any counterfit cash, but they did find a print roller with a $20 bill on it.

      It must have been around 2001 that I bought a ream of paper produced by the
      Crane company sold under the name of Old Money. It was literally recycled US currency that had been retired because of wear. I still have maybe 200 sheets (and a few envelopes) that I use sparingly for letters. The product is no longer manufactured. It's a lovely shade of green, crisp with cotton fiber content, and a joy to hold and write on.

It was called Old Money because that's what it was made from, retired bills that were reprocessed to produce fine writing paper tinted a lovely light green. It must have been the addition of metallic strips and other things to thwart counterfeiting that did the stuff in. I still have a limited supply of sheets and envelopes that I use sparingly.

    I feel like you were misleading by omitting the fact that "In God we trust" wasn't our motto until that point. Prior to that, our national motto "E Pluribus Unum" was already printed on our currency. It got changed to differentiate us from godless communism just like you mention, but by only mentioning the change to our currency rather than the fact the entire motto changed, you make it sound like "In god we trust" was always the motto. This is important, I feel, as it's an example of us breaking one of the sacred tenets of our democracy, the separation of church and state, due to fears.

    Short answer, in the early to mid 1800s, it was common to easily make counterfeit money, by taking low dollar notes, wiping the ink on them, and then reprinting them with a higher value. By combining the green, and black, it made that impossible. Since most people did not have access to special equipment needed to print 2 tone ink, and it was impossible to wipe the black, with out also wiping the green, it was impossible to counterfeit (for the most part).

    Here in Australia, all of our notes are both different colours and sizes, so there’s no ambiguity as to what you’re holding. $5 is pink, $10 is blue, $20 is red, $50 is yellow, and $100 is green. The reserve bank is progressively rolling out new notes that also feature tactile bumps for the blind.

      It's not actually paper. It's mostly cotton and linen. Assuming the make up is the same or close to how UK notes were (or still are for the £20 and £50 notes) before going the Aussie route with polymer they're pretty damn durable, just less so.

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 6 років тому

      hmm ok, so how do they go in the wash? I remember here that was the test, they would generally endure it & be able to be hung on the clothes line to dry & reused, but they'd generally be pulled from circulation once you used them after that because they were pretty obviously in bad condition. I have no idea what ours were made of to know if the cotton/linen is more durable or if that's what we were using too
      & really, you still use those for the $20 & $50 (I know you said pounds, but I don't think my keyboard has a pound symbol - I've never looked for it before) How does that work to have a mix of notes in circulation? We're currently switching to a new polymer note design for increased security & accessibility & all the atms & self serve checkouts etc are apparently having issues with it, so I'm curious if/how that causes/resolves issues with your machines & also, why? You switched to polymer a fair while ago now didn't you? Too long ago to still be in transition? Or were you waiting until the patent expired & you guys could develop the tech to make your own polymer - which I know has happened now

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 6 років тому

      I just realised something, having the 20's & 50's in a different material to the others, if it works for machines, would also assist visually impaired people. Is that a factor in the decision to keep them?
      I'm not actually sure what denominations you have there & what percentage of the notes those 2 are. We have a 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100, with coins for $1 & $2. I'm wondering in particular if you have a note between the 20 & 50.
      Our current changeover was for $5 first (probably the lowest number to test it/check for bugs with the lowest stakes), with the new $10 also now in circulation. Next to follow is going to be the $50 at the end of this year, so they're skipping one for now, no timeline yet on the new $20 or $100. I'm wondering if your system did similar

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 6 років тому +1

      It's just a phased change over. It's done in order of how common the notes are, so the 5 and 10's were changed first because there's more of them. 20's will change next and then 50's, maybe. £50 notes are very rare so they'll be pretty low down the priority list. We just changed our £1 coins too not long ago. The old ones were VERY easy to forge and hadn't been changed since they were introduced in 1973 before this.

    Why is the sky blue?
    Why are some oceans green, but some blue?
    Why is water colorless?
    And why can't chickens fly (for long), or, what's the record flight for a chicken or ostrich, or other "flightless" bird?

    • @naota3k
      @naota3k 6 років тому +42

      The sky is blue because of Rayleigh scattering
      Some oceans are green because of algae bloom, or because of depths and mineral content. Generally, in large quantity, water appears blue
      Water is not colorless, as implied by the previous question.
      I don't know shit about chickens but they're probably bred that way. Imagine a Chihuahua or Pug as a wild dog trying to survive; probably won't last long, same idea

    Living in Toronto Canada we quite often see green backs, but back in the 60s & 70s they were not so common. I was working at a gas station at the time on the night shift and found a calligraphy set that had inks that matched the green and black in US bills. The $CAN & $USD were about par at the time so when someone paid in $USD it was common for us to switch the $USD with our personal $CND to save on the hassle in filling out bank deposits ( $USD had to be listed separate). Well one night I got bored and altered a $USD 1.00 and added All others pay cash in the space below the seal, so the Bill read "IN GOD WE TRUST ALL OTHERS PAY CASH". I then pinned it on the corkboard behind the cash register, and thought no more of it. Thee days later on my days off I got a call from the boss, would I explain to the dummy on afternoon shift what I had done and that $USD did not have "ALL OTHERS PAY CASH" He was refusing to take $USD and accusing the customers of trying to pay counterfeit bills.

I was remonstrating about this with a couple of Americans, then proclaimed: "This is what banknotes should look like!", and I flashed them my Australian currency. It freaked them out - not because the denominations were all of different colours, but because they were made of plastic.

However a bill is only replaced if it's deemed worn out and any bill that isn't remains in circulation can be decades old. A bill printed in 2018 might not be put into circulation this year as the Federal Reserve Branches order only new ones when necessary.

      I, on the other hand, bought a Mercedes last year and I wrote a check for it. I didn't use credit to buy the car, but using credit shrewdly put me in the financial position that I could buy it.
      Additionally, my life has abruptly changed recently. I have been overseas twice since the first of the year (on my own dime). By all indications, I will be going overseas every few months for the foreseeable future. Using credit shrewdly has afforded me a job that I can take off whenever I want, and have the financial resources to be able to do so.

    That Lincoln started the Secret Service the same day he was assassinated is particularly interesting, because the reason the Secret Service picked up defending the President was largely because they were present during the assassination of William McKinley, and when asked about why they didn’t do more to protect the president, they basically said, “not officially our job.” So Congress said, “Oh, yeah? WELL, NOW IT IS!” (This account is highly simplified, and in many ways totally inaccurate, but it is the basic jist of what happened.)
