Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well and enjoying your learning journey. Today, I want to delve into a crucial topic from Chapter 5: "The Internet and Its Users." Specifically, we'll be discussing the retrieval and location of web pages. But before we dive into that, let's ensure we have a clear understanding of some basics.
I trust we're all familiar with web pages, websites, and terms like URLs. If you have any questions, you can always refer to the previously uploaded videos for clarification. Now, let's talk about DNS, which stands for Domain Name Server/System.
HTML, as we know, is the markup language used to display content on web browsers. All websites are built using HTML and are hosted on web servers, each with its own static IP address. This is where DNS comes into play. While humans find it easier to remember URLs, computers prefer IP addresses. DNS bridges this gap by translating URLs into their corresponding IP addresses, making it seamless for browsers to retrieve web pages.
Imagine having to memorize IP addresses instead of simply typing URLs. DNS eliminates this hassle, making web navigation smoother. Instead of typing out a lengthy URL like "www.education.co.uk," you could simply use its IP address if you know it, and both methods will lead you to the same destination.
DNS operates through multiple servers, each containing a database of URLs and their corresponding IP addresses. When you type in a URL, your browser queries the DNS servers. If the first server doesn't have the required IP address, it will request it from another server until it's found.
Once the IP address is retrieved, communication between the user's computer and the website server begins. HTML files are sent from the server to the user's computer, where the web browser interprets them for display.
