    Thumbs up for taking pictures along the way ... the absolutely best information for a tinkerer ... I do it often when doing mechanical work on my vehicles along with bagging and tagging.

    Many thanks, I hope I never have to do this, but I am confident I can thanks to your experience. My P2V was simple compared with the P4.
    I have repaired many laptops etc, and it is always good to learn from others, youtube is usually my first call,thanks.

    The silicone is not completely necessary, although it does help keep everything in place once the connectors are snapped together. One thing you might find helpful is that when you connect the flat four-wire cables to the two legs that have the sensors, the end of the cable that connects to the board inside the landing gear gets laid on top of the fixed connector and you push it straight on to snap it in place. It is not a plug that you push on from the bottom; rather, you lay the two parts on top of each other and snap them together.

    Great vid Hosh. I had to replace my landing gear but ended up taking the Phantom apart because the clip in the leg got buggered when I tried to remove it. :(
    Tip for those doing this - be very very very VERY careful with the screws that hold the little metal retaining plates in. I lost one screw in spite of being very careful. I didn't drop it, I had all the screws in a bowl it just disappeared. It's only $8 for a screw kit but $18 for shipping a total of $26 so I can replace one screw.
    Totally good advise with the spludger (plastic pry bar) a screw driver would have really left a mess.
    Oh well, I'll have spares if I lose any more. :D

    the landing gear cables also have numbers next to them that correspond to the numbers stamped on the inside of the landing gear. I just replaced the shell on my p4 and it won't turn on now, the only problem I had when replacing the shell was one of the antenna? cables pulled out but I don't know if that would cause the entire aircraft not to power

    For those who are trying to replace P4P Strut Covers that have popped out or otherwise been lost in an accident:
    Be aware that although they may appear to be 2 matched pairs, each cover is in fact UNIQUELY DIFFERENT and has an ID # 1-4 embossed on the inside to support this. Each cover MUST be matched to the correct Strut opening (I am awaiting Cover assignment info from DJI). Once correct assignment is made, assemble Cover onto Strut as follows:
    First, note each cover has a snap on each side and two square shaped bottom tabs and a little round top tab; there is a mating hole in the strut's interior for this tab. a) Remove any Gimbal lock attached to the Struts, if any, b) Insert the 2 bottom tabs into the opening, c) While holding the Cover in position SLIGHTLY bend the Strut in a direction opposite the opening so as to "elongate" the opening JUST enough to allow the round top tab to clear the opening, c) While holding the Strut in this position snap the cover closed then release the strut, the round tab should engage the hole and the Cover should fit flush on all sides.
    The covers are designed to be held securely in this manner, they should only pop off if the strut is bent enough (as in a crash) to release the round top tab.

    Great Vid Hosh
    I just want to add a comment about the small covers on the landing gear
    I lost one of my covers so I bought a full landing gear to get one of those tiny covers
    Note all 4 covers are different
    I did notice on your video Hosh that your little covers hadn't fully seated at the top
    Why because of the tiny fragile dowel pin that locates in a hole on the top.
    What I think needs to be done is when you insert that cover from the bottom first then finally you need to slightly pry the landing gear apart from the body and then when you have a slight gap you push the cover fully home without damaging the dowel .
    Does anybody know where to buy these small covers on their own ???
    Lading gear cost $37 a cover must cost 0.50 cents

      Sadly, its worse that than. The "peg" or dowel as you referred to it has a larger diameter than he hole! I had to carve the peg down to get it to seat correctly.

    so this looks like something that needs to happen if you crack the shell of the dji p4. do you have to go through all of these steps (as they pertain to the landing gear) if your only goal is to change the landing gear? before anyone answers I completely broke the landing gear and one of the wires with the little gold snap thing got destroyed. (by destroyed I mean I screwed it up). so I think i can discern from the video it is that and that alone that is going to require me to completely disassemble and separate the shell (as shown in the video) so that I can reroute the new wire that came with the landing gear. tell me that I'm incorrect and I do not need to completely take this thing apart please please please and also please

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  7 років тому

      +Cullen Darling I think you do need to spit it open. You cannot reroute the new wires without spitting the lower shell off.

    It doesn't look like your gimbal is physically damaged. What was the symptom after the crash? constant erratic behavior? I have crashed 2 - PH4s and both times the gimbal has gone gone crazy. I sent one back to DJI for repair and they only charged me $192 for the camera, $18 for a motor, $10 for landing gear component, and $150 labor... $370 total.... less than a gimbal. But I think the only problem may be a damaged ribbon cable.
    For the second, I got new a ribbon cable and shell off amazon and will replace them tonight. Seems like everyone is having the same gimbal issues after a 'hard landing'. I really hope it is just a damaged cable.

      @@kanudoss well. Too bad then. But i can give tou advice. Make sure the plastic snapping thing in the side of the cover are in good shape if not you can repair it with the peices that had become loose to be superglued with. But if you loose them. Well jist buy a new cover and secondly make sure there is no debris in the side of the plastic cover like tape paper ect. And make sure there is no cable just stuck in the snapping mecanism it will damage your cable and you have to buy a new one.

  • @malcolmwebb7909

    Hey Josh, Hoping you can help me with a question I have regarding my Phantom 4,
    I recently crashed my P4. I tried taking off from a friends boat but conditions were too windy.(really stupid on my part but no use crying over spilt milk)
    As I took off a gust of wind blew the phantom backwards into the radar on the boat. After hitting the radar the phantom flipped and landed in the back of the boat. The props stopped spinning and it landed upside down. Thankfully it never went overboard and end up in a total loss. Since the crash I have had an issue with the Gimbal. At first it was giving me a message that the gimbal was disconnected. Also there was no signal to the ipad. Later I turned it on and the image signal came back. The gimbal was sitting skew and didn't level itself off. Also it was moving from the RC control but not has stopped working.
    Now I took the camera and gimbal apart thinking maybe the ribbon cable was damaged in the accident. I cannot see any damage to the Ribbon cable.
    My question for you is if I buy a new gimbal including the camera from dji will it resolve my issue? Is there anything in the body of the phantom that may be affecting the gimbal from working properly?

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  7 років тому

      +Malcolm Webb I don't know to be honest. There is a floating unit under the gimbal unit that connects to the gimbal. I'm sure it's what gives the gimbal information on how to move and point. Start by doing an alignment on the gimbal. Google how to do it.

    • @malcolmwebb7909
      @malcolmwebb7909 7 років тому

      Thanks Josh. Are you referring to doing a Gimbal Auto calibration? Or are you talking about actually physically adjusting the alignment on the gimbal? If I try do the calibration the gimbal is not moving at all yet it says that the gimbal is calibrated. On the videos I find it turns and moves to calibrate itself. Right now it just is stuck and doesn't move at all.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  7 років тому

      Are the gimbal arms bent at all? If it were me, and the arms were not bent I would attempt a wire harness exchange. Since that is MUCH cheaper than a new gimbal then see where you end up.

    • @malcolmwebb7909
      @malcolmwebb7909 7 років тому

      They are not bent at all. Sorry if I'm asking really dumb questions but are you referring to the ribbon cable? I feel like the gimbal wasn't hit itself just that the aircraft took a hard blow landing upside down. What would cause the camera not to adjust to the remote control telling it to look up or down. I am able to run the calibration on the computer via the dji 2 assistant but then it just does not respond to the controller. i couldn't find any damage to the ribbon cable when i took it apart.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  7 років тому

      A hard blow could have disconnected the cable. Or damaged the connecting port. I bring up the cable because it is the cheapest part to fix. I'd start there, since replacing the guibal is really expensive!

    Does anyone know where to buy landing gear for a Phantom 4 Pro? It has a different set of landing gear than the Phantom 4. I don't even need the whole set really, I just lost one of the plastic covers at the top of one leg. Everything still works fine, but it's annoying to look at. I've looked all over and can't find anything. DJI says they can't help me I need to send it in for repair. I just want to buy a $0.25 plastic cover and they want me to mail it to them... that's some "customer service"... Maybe I'll just get some white electrical tape and try not to think about it too much.

    • @Ahsieh2
      @Ahsieh2 7 років тому

      If you look at pictures of the 2 drones side by side you will see what I'm talking about. The P4 has a step where the leg meets the body. The P4 Pro has thinner legs that smoothly transition to the body. I wonder why it's so heard to find gear for the Pro though. I even heard they have discontinued the P4 and are just selling what's left in inventory. You'd think since they're focusing on the Mavic and P4 Pro that they'd have some replacement gear to sell.
