In my opinion a good Dubbing depends on a very fine line, if they try to leave it identical to the original it ends up getting cringe or looking like a Fan-Dubbing, but if they change too much it looks like another anime entirely. A certain level of localization is necessary to maintain what the original wanted to convey but at the same time adapt to a new language and even a different culture, as many terms, jokes and references are lost in translation.

In case you don't know already, Satoshi Mizukami made some (now deleted) tweets about how Bisquit Hammer ended up how it was. Enlightening, at least. _Edit:_ I will be quoting someone else who translated the comments that Mizukami here. - I'll say this because the anime is over now. - 2 years ago, a certain famous animator joined as a core member and wanted to do anime original developments. - The project collapsed two times, when he joined and left, so they ran out of time. That's how things went. - By the way, one of his ideas was to turn Yuuhi into a former assassin and his mother into a serial killer.

I was going to comment that the fruit of evolution was from last year. However, Geoff deftly explained how and why it should also make the cut this year. I shall never again doubt such a knowledgeable and refined sommelier of anime trash as Geoff. Were I rich enough to employ one of such pedigree I'd proudly rename him Sebastian and keep him by my side at all times. I may have to content myself with a tiny replica while supplies last.
fun part with the fruit of evolution is that it is a full on parody and critique of isekai tropes that get more and more insane as the story goes on in the LN. I mean that LITTERARY, below will be some LN spoilers so skip if you want blind experience. Ok since you read this far here are some spoilers, there is an evil god and the blood/powermanifestation of him on said world after he got imprisoned and the gods abandoned the world manifets as those fruits. The effect of those fruits allow a individual of a species to become a super individual and if you eat the limit of 10 of them...well shit happends. Shit like getting an automatic evolution trait to deal with threats and in our human protagonists case he gains the ability to speak with ANYTHING ( yes even the spirit behind magic energy and the world itself much to his chargrin ), the ability to learn ANY magic once he discover it ( aka walk into a library and read magic tombs which he can because talk/understand EVERYTHING ) which makes him master every magic in the world ( again much to his chargrin ). Last but not least he gain the ability to butcher anything owned from what he defeats/kills .....this include their ENTIRE trained skill list, their life diary with all the knowledge in it AND their stats. Combine this and you get a protagonist that is so scared of even opening a book and avoid combat just to crush any challenge without trying. Even his personal stat window ( all people have personal stats ) decides to give up on him and goes on a personal journey of discovery. He gets that level of stupidly broken throughout the story that the seas spiritual existance notices that the can't swim and out of the desire to not harm him evades him when he visits the beach. He then talks abit with the spiritual existance of the ocean and the world and they decide to allow him to walk on/through water. Last but not least remember the absurd learn magic part..well part through the LN he stops casting magic entirely and just talks to the trees/earth etc about if they can do x and it happens because the existance of the world likes him. Magic and weapons refuse to harm him to the point that a holy sword bends and hurt its own user rather than be pointed at him. He has a personal chat with the essence of death etc....essentially he becomes God. All this happens while you get to experience his inner dialogue of the absurdity going down, if that isn't a satire that makes fun of isekai tropes I don't know what🤣
I actually liked Fruit because it is a takedown of Isekai tropes that doesn't take itself seriously in the least. It's one of those "so intentionally bad it's good" shows.
I'm right there with you on that - Fruit isn't meant to be taken seriously, as it doesn't take itself seriously. It's fully tongue in cheek and I love it for that

What makes Fanfare of Adolescence more frustrating than forgettable for me is that even with the often jank horseriding animation, you have such a cool, unique sport to work with! You have a built-in relationship between horse and rider that even the doofiest of horse girl (not to be confused with horsegirl) movies tapped into. But instead of doing that the show is about the main character being an ex-idol whose manager has like, turbo-illegal amounts of control over his life and keeps trying to manipulate him back into showbiz. It's like they actively didn't want to make a horse racing anime but were forced to at gunpoint.
What happened to Muv-Luv Alternative is absolutely tragic. On one hand you've got stilted pacing and low quality character animation for over half the series and on the other you've got the best mecha CGI I've seen in years with the fan favorite arcs getting treated with much more respect and care. So you've got a disappointing product that at the very end decided to show just a glimpse of WHAT COULD'VE BEEN. If the whole show had been treated with as much care and time as the final arc got we wouldn't be talking of it here. 😭😭😭😭
And if there's no season 3, it really will be a tragic case of what could've been. The action is epic in that show, regardless of the poor directions they took elsewhere

Literally just finished the last episode of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer last night. I had it rated pretty low on MAL, but just for the hell of it I suffered through all 24 of those bloody episodes. Not sure why, I guess I was just so I could cross one off because personally I hate dropping something if I've invested more than a few episodes
Friends don't let friends sunk cost fallacy themselves. If you don't like a thing just drop it. You can always go back later if you find out you still actually care.
Good job wasting your time. It's funny hoe you watched the whole thing. Yet say it's bad. If I see something is bad I drop it. What got you invested anyways if, it was garbage from the start? @@imsentinelprime9279 no, I'm just stubborn. There's only a few things I've dropped. They were just definitely not even a little bit my thing or else just terrible. I gave this a 5 on MAL. Was it a waste? Well, for the most part, but again, I'm stubborn, and sometimes I'll just watch for the culture. So I have stuff to recommend (or not) to others, and extra stuff to talk about, be it positive or negative. I don't even count it as dropping if I don't even get it through the first episode. I usually try to give stuff a chance, but there's some stuff that's just like no... Can't really drop it if you haven't even started. But if I've gotten more than a few episodes in, then I might as well finish it, especially if it's not a big series. One of the few that I've dropped was pop team epic. Im glad Spirit Circle hit Geoff as hard as it hit me. After I first read it, Spirit Circle was the only thing I wanted to talk about for the next couple weeks.
I reiterate that, as someone who both read and enjoyed freakangels online when it was coming out, the anime legitimately had me asking myself "was this ever actually even good?" Now that is top tier shit.
I always struggle because I actually like the premise of isekai, the idea of seeing a new world through a familiar set of eyes appeals a lot to me. But like. I’m not all that attracted to women? Or at least the fan service most women in Isekai provide. I like interesting characters and seeing them challenged. Though I’ll admit sometimes a good male power fantasy can be great. But I can never say “I like isekai” because like. Additions in the genre like harems are just…. Not my cup of tea? I dunno. Wish there was another word for just the premise part.
I'm still hoping to see an Isekai where the protagonist is reincarnated into the body of person old enough to have an established circle of friends and acquaintances and for whom making a faux pas would have consequences, without the memories of the person whose body they occupy. The point being that they must fit in as this other person, figuring out social customs on the fly as well as not arousing suspicion from friends and family.
Have you tried Faraway Paladin? I haven't watched the anime, but the manga is pretty good and it is an isekai in an interesting if very classical fantasy world with no harem shenanigans.
I think it'd be funny to do something that's kind of like Romantic Killer, but for someone reincarnated into a situation where they're supposed to be destined to be part of a hero's harem, and the poor girl has to dodge destiny's dogged attempts to put them together. The harem fantasy genre itself is the antagonistic force that must be resisted.
The most baffling thing about Legend of Mana was how they managed to botch the ending that badly. It was almost impressive just how badly they handled it.
I truly hope the next one is literally just the founder starting the cult himself. No sugar coating or nothing just him starting cult using his superpowers
If Isekai is more impressionistic than literal, then is Digimon NOT an Isekai? (I mean its always Urban Fantasy but I feel like half the time its also an Isekai...)

Never watched or read Biscuit Hammer, but your agony resonates all too well with me. Too often, i wake up and think about how much of a travesty the Pandora Hearts anime is and how unlikely it is to ever get the adaptation it deserves 😭.
I think the issue is that it isn't yet at the point where the manga got disastrously bad. So it's just kind of a middling turd with solid production values. Season 3, baby!
Another excellent showing, although I’m still wondering what happened to the roast of the crazy cult superhero trilogy we were promised so long ago, leaving roasting a cult only 2/3rds finished feels empty
Keep in mind, Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer is how shojo fans feel ALL THE DAMN TIME when things like 7 Seeds and Requiem of the Rose King get slaughtered at the anime stage. At least Lucifer resulted in reprints of the manga that had already been licensed but was OOP, but 7 Seeds' terrible adaptation basically doomed it to never be licensed (unless Do Not say Mystery sells incredibly well). Yumi Tamura is also a god tier mangaka in the same stratosphere as Mizukami and Miura, all they've all got trash adaptations, it's beyond sad.
Every time I think about RotRK's anime adaption I feel such rage. Its a wonderful, beautifully drawn manga and it was done so damn dirty. It deserved WAY better budget, pacing, and exposure. Its so unfortunate. I'm tired of shojo getting shafted.
Your discussion of isekai stuff reminds me of r/otomeisekai where stories that are not actually isekai, but have vibes from the setting (a lot of which involve time regression) are counted.
I like to classify those stories as isekai-adjacent, where a story/emerging genre (like "villainess time regression" or "my weak skill is actually OP" stuff) is obviously taking inspiration from isekai stories, without the actual "being sent to another world" bit. Like there's a clear taxonomical relation here.
@@tinyetoile5503 yeah, one could consider Isekai a large subgenre of the Fantasy Power Trip sort of genre. A lot of those Isekai adjacent series hit every box on the Isekai checklist except the one actual part that makes it Isekai

It actually makes me so happy that you mentioned Spirit Circle! I remember the night I read all of it a couple years ago. It’s one of the greatest mangas I’ve had the pleasure reading
Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer was so great a manga that when I heard it was getting an anime, I was confused why they were doing a remake. I read it with such attention that I animated it in my bloody mind and convinced myself it had an actual anime already. Maybe that means any attempt to actually animate it would end up disappointing me, but fvck this abomination!
Anastoria was such a disappointment, if it was just cute girls doing things I would've loved it, but it promised a modka moment but they never delivered. Incredibly shit
I'm glad to see that Muv Luv was mentioned, as it's one of the saddest stories as far as a once-famous property and its decline goes. It's common knowledge it was the inspiration for Attack on Titan, and for the longest time the number 1 rated Visual Novel (Until the Anime's impact dethroned it in favor of Steins;Gate). Its heaviest moments hit home hard enough that it's still called the PTSD simulator. But the mediocre Anime, the corporate bullshit, and the fact that technically its the second Anime on this list to be affiliated with NFTs says how what was once a Mecha property compared to Gundam itself has slowly faded away. What a shame. What a rotten way to die.
The only one I saw of this was Mana... And GOD it was awful. I kept stubbornly watching in hopes there'd be some kind of payoff that redeemed it all, but all I ended up getting was frustration and hate for the characters, who were either weak and useless or downright sociopathic traitorous hypocrites. And somehow I think I could have been able to accept all that if they hadn't decided to undo everything and pretend all is good in the world by just performing two deus-ex-miracles in a row in the last 5 minutes with nothing but two lines of dialogue to lazily explain it all. I honestly can't imagine how bad the others here must have been.
The announcement for Biscuit Hammer had me excited...but then 2022 clearly had to exist. hopefully 2023 is a lot better, the line up for January seems promising so far!
19:58 you should read Sengoku Youko too; I just hope that if it ever gets animated, it's not by these guys. It's also interesting that in the 3rd tome of his short story collections (The adventure of Great Space Emperor Ginga Thunder), almost all of the short stories turn up being related. Trivia: the magical girl series shown as a metawork in L&BH, Magical Marie, has a chapter in the 1st tome of the short story collections (Gekogeko). Trivia 2: L&BH has a (thankfully) non-animated epilogue in the 2nd tome of the short story collections (Piyopiyo). Trivia 3: Mizukami Satoshi has some very irregular series he only draws a chapter of whenever he feels like it that can only be read in the short story collections (there's usually one or two chapters per volume of Monster Town, for example)
I'm so happy for Vazzrock. Thank you for giving it all it deserved as another poor adaptation of a music cd idol franchise! [It was on my running list of Biggest Dissapointment this year. With designs by an artist whose style would've made a beautiful idol anime, the franchise it comes from just keeps putting out lower and lower quality adaptations for their groups whose songs outside of the anime original ones are really good!] (Happy New Year!)

May he attend to you dutifully, kind patron!
fun part with the fruit of evolution is that it is a full on parody and critique of isekai tropes that get more and more insane as the story goes on in the LN.

@@ericamborsky3230 see that sounds so fun!!! I’d watch or read the hell out of that!

With designs by an artist whose style would've made a beautiful idol anime, the franchise it comes from just keeps putting out lower and lower quality adaptations for their groups whose songs outside of the anime original ones are really good!]
(Happy New Year!)
I'll always defend High Guardian Spice. It walked so Owl House could run.
The AVGN bit was great, but man...that Spoony one cuts deep, that clip has been bouncing around in my head for years. Time to go play some Ultima
him: who the hell would want a jpeg of a coconut nft from a anime
also him: come buy my figurine, its small enough to fit in your jar
Yuri on ice fans were ready to pounce for a sec
Dang wasn’t expecting a spoony cameo! Crazy times, keep up the good work.
Kind of surprised season 2 of Shield Boi didn't make the "Most Disappointing" list after that absolute slog through the Spirit Turtle Arc.
That because he didn't read novels.
And to be honest the spirit Turtle arc wasn't of the series it could've been great in the anime since it's weaknesses would have been turned into strength. What they butchered was the other world arc.
@@killua6226 Look at you having a problem not with the Spirit Turtle Arc like... everyone else on the planet, but choosing to instead nitpick about a few minor and unimportant changes they made to the next arc. Bold move Cotton.
Wow, a Spoony Experiment reference in the wild, in the year 2022 no less! That's even more of a surprise than the Brutal Legend joke.
Is that Steambot Cronicles on the shelf behind our boi? What an odd game!
“A relaxing, non-linear adventure! Steambot Chronicles.”
I like how "Worst Anime Awards" can also mean that, of all anime awards, these are the worst ones.
