  • Viewers will recall her portrayal of "Mama" Olivia Jefferson on the Jeffersons from 1975-1978, appearing sporadically throughout that time.

Zara deserved betty than this skimpy treatment. She was a fine elocutionist ( the art and study of formal speech) in Harlem New York in the 1940',s who had graduated from the Worchester School of Speech and Music, and then moved to Florida to teach acting, then start her own acting studio. She became known as Florida's 'Dean of Drama'. She was driven out of Florida by Jim Crow laws and the harassment by segregationists. and moved to Hollywood where she was a regular presence of the Ebony Showcase Theater. She was known primarily as a character actress in both film and television taking small parts similar to the roles Ellen Corby (Grandma Walton) played in the same time frame, and making the most out of them until she hit the jackpot with Mother Jefferson in the last few years of her life. She did Playhouse 90, Run for Your Life, Cowboy in Africa, Mod Squad, Night Gallery and in movies like Sugar Hill and Brother John. If her credits seem more sparce than other character actors, , its because there were fewer movies made with black stars so she had fewer opportunities to play someone's mother, aunt, or sister. Such was the role race played in America in the mid and late 20th century!

I am sorry that I didn't go into depth on her acting credits. It's hard to do when trying to make shorter videos and I pinpoint the stuff that I know people can relate to. I plan on doing biographies of the stars as time goes on in the life of my channel.

Just one correction here Ellen Corby of the Waltons had no small part. She was on that show for decades, and every show she had a part to play. So I don’t think the two women are equal in that sense.

@@joyceadair3003 I was unclear. I meant the kind of roles Corby had for decades, before The Waltons.

@@BTURNER1961 Corby was a hoot in "Caged." She was told by the prison matron there would be a strip search. "Oh, goody!"
