    I’ve been using that same chimney brush for about 3 years, twice a season, it works great, and keeps the creosote down.

    Worked better than I thought. Because of the design of my roof and chimneys, they are hard to clean. I will have to look into them. Thanks for the video!

      Getting out the baffle board on top is kind of tricky. They’re pretty fragile so be careful.

  • @jimchimney8251
    @jimchimney8251 4 роки тому +6

    Just be a little careful you don't over sweep your chimney flue, make sure your drill is on a low speed and you don't do too many passes as you will risk damaging your flexible liner or eating out the mortar joints if she is clay or brick lined. One pass up and one pass down should be enough If your sweeping her quarterly when in use. If you over sweep a flue you will be replacing it sooner then you think.

    I give the pipe a good sweeping; clean out the cap; inspect the bricks; use a wire brush in the stove itself than vacuum out everything inside the stove that sits above the bricks, etc. I use chimney sweeping logs..........once after my first or second burn and another usually around the beginning of January. My wood also is well seasoned and under roof and usually 2 or 3 years old.

    Hi Adam Happy New Year
    I have the same
    Soot Eater Rotary Chimney Sweep I’ve had it for 4 or 5 years it does work great
    I’m from Connecticut and a chimney sweep charges $225 to clean the chimney
    I have almost the same wood insert with the catalytic converter system and the baffles it’s such a clean burn
    Well anyway you have a beautiful homestead

    Great video about the soot eater, thanks for posting!I have a similar fireplace insert you do [enviro kodiak 1700 with a 6 inch chimney liner and cap]. Until my stove guy decided to retire last year (21) I had him sweep it yearly. So I'm sweeping my own liner for the 1st time and just ordered up one of these soot eaters. Seems simple enough, except I'll use a shop vac and plastic to prevent the dust from blowing back into the house, which is what he always did. I noticed that you left the insert's air tubes in place after you removed the 2 baffle boards.....did the sooteater poles damage the air tubes at all ? I was thinking I should remove the air tubes for better access...what do you think?

  • @OurGreeneAcres
    @OurGreeneAcres 5 років тому

    That was pretty simple, good job on the video. I going to attempt to make a video when I clean my stove pipe as it all depends if I can get the camera crew to show up since I have to go on the roof.

    Great video 👍 (just a idea set a shop vac with the filter bag on it run the hose close to the chimney pipe that should help get the dust as it falls). Videos are about the perfect length, a little longer would be ok as well since the content is perfect. Enjoyed the camping trip as well, work hard...play hard. A getaway well deserved. That's a nice set up. I use a sweep that I have to run down from the top of the roof. I try to sweep mine 2 to 3 times a year, its overkill but I sleep well at night knowing I'm not going to have a chimney fire.

    Good video Adam, should get by with one cleaning per season unless you use a pine log for your main wood source. I know folks turn their noses up about burning pine but if it is your main wood in your area what are you going to do freeze or stay warm?? Anyway, sure glad you were able to keep the dust down! Thanks for sharing with us.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  5 років тому

      We pretty much only use oak, cherry, ash, hickory and maple. I usually will leave pine back in the woods for the wildlife to use for cover. But yeah I think I’m gonna see what it looks like next year after a full fall winter spring burning season. See how much creosote comes off then and then decide if I need to do it twice a year. Thanks for the comment buddy!

    i watched your video and the money you save on sweeping your chimney is valid but there is a lot more to sweeping a chimney then just sweeping. generally the sweep you hire does an inspection of the system top to bottom and if there is any issue they will let you know. there are ways to check the system in which i am actually making videos i will be uploading starting in a couple of weeks. i have been a sweep for 20+ years and there are some things that you can do to make the way you swept it easier and more efficient. 1. use a shop vac and lay plastic down while sweeping for dust control, soot is hazardous and can affect your health. 2. Wear a fitted mask with filters for dust you can get these from the paint store, you do not want to breath what comes out of your chimney. 3. make sure your system has a liner properly connected to your stove if it does not you will need to pull the stove out to get to the other parts of the system to sweep and remove debris properly, from the firebox, smoke shelf, smoke chamber ect.. 4. ensure the brush you use is sized for the system/liner too small of a brush will get some of the creosote but not as much as a proper sized brush can get and you could be leaving behind debris that can start a chimney fire. 5. always check any connection to the system to make sure it does not have any cracking, openings, rusting ect... 6. check your cap and spark arrestor to make sure there in fair condition. Just thought i would help educate the audience a little more. oh and it is recommended to sweep your chimney about every cord of oak you burn through or at least inspect to make sure the build up is not more than 1/16th of an inch going up the system.

    you work down from the top, so that way you can close off the bottom and not get a living room full of soot.

    • @supersweepschimney
      @supersweepschimney 2 роки тому

      Just use a shop vac and go slow from the bottom no roof access needed, the vac will suck out the debris.

    I use just a standard chimney brush $25 plus 4 8ft fiberglass screw together poles. Push it up and down the flue a few times and clean as a whistle. Every cord I burn I sweep once. Keeps the creosote to a minimum. I have an outside clean out trap which keeps the dust outside. No trash bag needed. Great video on that machine. I’m curious how long the brush lasts.

      @@HometownAcres hey can't believe I found this on your channel when I was googling when I know you from all the newer videos like the firewood processing, building the lake and such. I know you don't know me, but for me it was like seeing a blast from the past.
      Anyway, your brand looks different but the head looks identical. Mine has twisted square style string trimmer line, but you can put any poly trimmer line. There's an allen head on it thet loosens the clamps that hold the line in. It lasts quite a while because the length is much longer than my 6" diameter stainless liner and it works on centrifugal force i.e. the strings expand outward as it's spinning. But yeah it's totally serviceable an no need to replace the head. Cheers!

      It had 8 3 foot sections so it should get you 24ft up. Sounds like you’d be 7 feet short. What I found was that the creosote build up was the worst at the top which makes sense. That’s where the pipe is the coldest. You might want to see if you can find extra connectors

    Good one Adam, that will make cleaning the chimney an easy task. I've been using one for years. I use a thick piece of plastic with a small hole in the middle for the rods, and never get any dust in the room. You may want to season your wood longer, i burn from March to November and clean the chimney after the burning season and only get a cupful of creasote, I only put wood that I've seasoned for minimum of three years in the woodstove.
    I need to catch up on your other videos I've just got home from a few days in hospital.

    • @HometownAcres
      @HometownAcres  5 років тому

      It’s so foreign to me to think about burning March - November haha. I guess that’s what being on the other side of the equator does. I hope everything’s ok and the hospital visit wasn’t anything serious. Take care buddy!

    To be noted: Cleaning your chimney yourself for safety is a great thing, but some states and countries and insurance companies have ideas on how that should be - so doing it yourself is not necessarily the best idea everywhere.
