Midnight Oil are in the US right now. Playing their final tour ever. Playing in Chicago tonight. My mate is over there on business and talked his boss into letting him take a trip up there to see them play tonight. Much love to the Oils, much love to humanity. We have got this folks. Exciting time to be alive. Link in comment below to them live in LA from a night or two ago. Check out 65 year old Rob Hurst drum solo in it. Ro
@@kv4320 They've taken a few hiatus' over the many years, but have regrouped for benefit gigs and the occasional tour. I've seen them 17 times, with the first being back in 1986 and my last only a few years back. They've lost none of their energy on stage and their gigs are an experience to say the least. Go Oils
@@RolandDeschain1 For sure. He's an animal on the kit. Have you seen Midnight Oil 1984 doco/movie? There's a great scene where one of the roadies talks about his first day on the job and he questions the head roadie why the drum kit needs to be nailed into the stage floor. Very funny
Yeah, Rob Hirst is 65…. But HAWTA than many many others of much younger age. To be fair tho, I’ve had a mad crush on him since a Sunday arvo Fisherman’s Wharf unplugged gig way back in the 80s. I was about 15 and nearly turned into a puddle when he smiled at me. 🤤
They rocked upped in NY City and just played.. In front of Big Oil HQ.. made some enemies that day!! The music video was partly filmed in front of the Exxon Building in Manhattan, New York City. This portion of the video shows the band performing in front of a banner that reads “Midnight Oil makes you dance, Exxon oil makes us sick."
Peter Garrett who is the singer here also became a politician for a while to try and make a change.....and to me bed's are burning is one of the best the messages and unfortunately it is still relevant to this day
I was living in Sydney in 1979, and Midnight Oil regularly played at a bar in Neutral Bay. Before each concert there were the scooter boys on one side of Military Road, and the skin heads on the other side, and they would be hurling insults at each other. But all the animosity seemed to disappear once the music started.
There is a DVD called Black Rain Falls which shows this concert in from of Exxon. They just drove up and started playing. They were lucky that the police actually let them play. The DVD covers the toxic spill in Prince William Sound after the Exxon Valdez had its hull damaged and spewed crude oil everywhere killing wildlife and polluting the ocean. Oils have been my favourite band for more than 40 years.
Nothing compared to seeing Midnight Oil in a small venue. When they started in the 70s they would play in venues that squeezed in 100-500 people. It was wild.
I loved that song a lot. When I rode my racing bicycle back in the days and a short hill came up I raced for the top playing the music in my head, timing it so that I reached the hill right at the climax of the song. - Great memories...
Awesome, I remember when this happened...dam I'm getting old! The Oils always keeping it real for a good cause. I remember studying the Exon Valdez in geography at high school.
I can see plenty of people have already said it here but I'll say it again. Midnight Oil are without doubt the best band I have ever seen live. They are just so dynamic, their sound is always superb even in less then ideal venues. I've seen them a handful times and every single time they absolutely blew me away. I've seen many huge bands play in my life and none of them beat these guys.
I saw them live in Adelaide South Australia in '84 and was right up the front they are phenomenal live and every song has a powerful message! Peter Garrett is explosive, he was literally right in front of me and I love how unique his dancing is, it's simply spectacular and makes you feel great watching him. My friend got squashed and fainted a few people away from me and suddenly this huge guy in the pit just pulled me over the barracade into the pit and Peter Garrett stared with a shocked look as I had a shocked look on my face too not knowing what was going on, but then the guy told me about my friend and I gave Peter the ok sign and he kept singing after smiling. Ten minutes later my friend and I were back in our spots.
Yes you are right, Midnight Oil make these songs accessible to people. Which in turn makes the topics better understood. Their song, Blue sky mine for example deals with asbestos mining, and the lack of resources or correct ppe that were given to miners, and now, so many people with asbestosis. Great band, and a great reaction.
This song later on took a different meaning as well, Peter Brock who Won Bathurst 9-Times. Bathurst is a Car Race up at the Mountain at 'Bathurst in NSW Australia that they Race for 1000 Kilometers or 621 Miles and it's flat to the boards all day in the Car. Brocky died in 2006, Peter Brock was Called 'King of the Mountain' by his Fans as he Won The Great Race 9 times.
It’s actually about a foot race on a mountain near where I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The drummer Reg Hurst was a enthusiast foot runner so I imagine that’s where the idea came from. But the imagery in the song is very much a photo of the region cane fields etc..
To your point, bands that can project the same energy in front of a huge crowd like in this video or at a really small venue in Killington VT where i had the chance to see them is really cool. They just put on a great show for anyone who appreciates their music.
Watch the live version of 'Sometimes' recorded at this (Exxon Building) protest gig. At one point, Pete falls off a speaker that he's standing on, only to recover and climb up even higher before finishing the song.
Yes quiet accidental but instantly adopted by petrol heads after the passing of Brockie. "Workers of the world Run to the of the Mountain" and "Mountain in the shadow of light Rain in the valley below" Speaks to anyone who has ever gone to the great race."
If you want to see Midnight Oil ( and Peter Garrett ) at their best you should watch them perform " Beds are Burning " from their ELLIS PARK CONCERT 1994 - now that's how you hold a crowd in the palm of your hand as a frontman

The only other song I can think of that comes close to this song as far as message and song structure is by The Hunters & Collectors "When the river runs dry." You guys should review that one as well, another story of corporate greed.
Not to take away from the importance of the message of this song and how good Peter Garret with the rest of Midnight Oil are. Another Aussie artist that you really need to check out is Darryl Branthwaite. Do yourselves a favor and please listen to "Horses" along with his other songs "One Summer" & "As The Days Go By".
He is mixing the oil spill and lack of responsibility of the oil companies and using the greatest motorsport race in Australia, the Bathurst 500, as a juxtaposition. "King of the Mountain" is the title given to the winner.....................but the stuff people love in motorsport comes at a cost......................really brings the message home because Peter Brock THE King of the Mountain was a poster almost every teen rev head had on their wall.
Iron Maiden is arguably the most melodic band ever if a band's entire catalog is considered, and the majority of their songs carry a somber message tied to how humans continually F up the privilege of (co)existing on this planet. Good for Midnight Oil to follow down the same path.
Hate to correct you mate but the Oils formed in 1972. Well before Iron Maiden and Maiden are heavy metal while the Oils are just a hard rocking pub rock band with a message. I doubt they influence each other in any way.
@@iankearns774 Never said anyone influenced anyone else. I placed them in a similar category based on social consciousness and melodic music, that's it.

This was in New York outside the Exon building in protest because of the massive oil spill
Grew up listening to the Oils, AC/DC, Barnesy and Farnsey. So lucky.

Before each concert there were the scooter boys on one side of Military Road, and the skin heads on the other side, and they would be hurling insults at each other. That's because they used to play French's tavern in Oxford Street. A punk venue. And they used to play punk covers.
There is a DVD called Black Rain Falls which shows this concert in from of Exxon. They just drove up and started playing. They were lucky that the police actually let them play. This was outside the Exxon Building and was a protest concert to protest Exxon disclaiming responsibility for cleaning up the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
So many of their songs are brilliant for this exact reason - catchy but with a definite message. Love them.

Peter Garret went on to the Australian Parliament as a senator.
