In 1972, Rangers fans attacked franco's police force in Barcelona, the old Barca fans remember this, as they were under a brutal regime, who hated the catalans.
@Busybee65 I was also in Barcelona The Spanish police attacked Rangers fans who were celebrating on the pitch. The police took batons to women and children. This infuriated the Rangers fans who turned on the police and chased them down the tunnel.
Saw Arsenal Vs Rangers at Highbury in the mid 60's? At just after half time it went crazy on the Northbank after someone threw a bottle into the girders of the stand roof! An avalanche of bottles from Rangers followed. I pulled my jacket up over my head and ran! I ran through people with bottles of beer waiting to be drunk by the Rangers fans! I saw police on the floor and a lot of carnage! Not good to see as a young teenager! Madness!
Was right in the middle of the bottle throwing and it was always safer to look upwards away from the pitch in those situations. Preferred to hook up with some Geordie lasses after match as per the norm for away games. More chance of coming out unscathed that way.
I was at this game and both sets of fans were a disgrace. However these comments are a one sided distortion of what really happened. Any comments about gangs of Newcastle fans ambushing small groups of Rangers fans in the city before the game even started?
I think anyone who was attending football late 60s through the 70s will agree whenever Rangers or Celtic played in England, whether European or a friendly they would cause mayhem, My brother, dad and uncles were at Bobby Moore testimonial v Cetic at Upton Park in 1970 and said it was worse crowd theyd witnesse.d However as this video states it wasnt about taking ends, that was an English territorial thing. Rangers at Villa in 76 were already in the Holte end but invaded the pitch looking for rival fans to fight, same as they did at O.d Trafford in 74. My brother remembers Celtic coming into West Hams northbank from the West Terrace joining up with Celtic fans already in there (all really pissed) and charging into the middle fists flying, but he swears by half time they had all disappeared. He .left the ground early with my old man and said all the pubs near the ground were full of drunk Celtic ! Scotland used to take Wembley every year back then too.
You cannot compare Celtic and Rangers as far as behaviour is concerned! Is any club with a massive support 100% innocent? Or course not, but you simply cannot compare Rangers fans with Celtic ...unless you are simply misinformed. Are you aware how many young Celtic fans have been murdered, slashed and beaten senseless by Rangers fans? There was another just last week ..lad barely survived! All done in the name of hatred. The Celtic fans have simply never been like that. You need to remember that Celtic has the largest support in Britain, probably the world, and they have a great reputation anywhere they go. Ask the people of Barcelona who they prefer being in their city - Celtic or Rangers. I know it's easy to put both clubs together, but I've stayed in Scotland my whole life, believe me they couldn't be more different.
@@talkinghead3169Celtic largest support in Britain 😂 the world 😂 think Man Utd might have something to say about that although most of the Mancs support Celtic anyway and vice versa 🙄
Well before proper hooliganism in England- the jocks taught us a lesson and it would never happen again as The Red Army will testify to 6 years or so later if the're being honest.
@DanLn1 funny how qt high school in 70s, these names were legendary amongst us even if wed never met them, as you say Johnny Hoy and Jenkins at Arsenal, Babs qnd Danny Harkins at Chelsea, my own team WHU had Bill Gardner, Teddy Bunter, a lad called Williams who apparently led the mile end, Spurs was Sammy Skyves, Robbins, and Terry P. Millwall Tiny and Bobby the wolf, i also remember leader of the Palace was a lad known as Tufty Ellis! A lot of them have passed since then. Others have made a killing 'writing' books.
Arsenal Rangers - a ‘friendly’ in about 1967 with 34,000 there, which ended in a riot - probably marks the real birth of the original Arsenal firm led by Johnny Hoy
yes I would accept that-ive heard a lot about Jonny hoys original arsenal mob, however, in the main there were no big mobs in England in 1969, hence the jocks smashing wembley up in 1974 and no real resistance in the ground- that would be a seminal moment in how things changed in England after that imho@@ajp8941
They are responsible for many murders in Glasgow because of football. Sad day when murder is being done in the name of football. Rangers have a very deserved reputation for football violence, very few clubs have a history as seriously violent - Just think about the frightening film of them attempting to kick a Manchester policeman to death! And they would have killed him, had he not miraculously gotten away. And it's not just when they lose ...100s of them had fights ..with each other! ..while celebrating in Glasgow city centre. The Celtic fans couldn't be more different - They took 100k fans to Seville and there wasn't a single arrest ..they even won awards for behaviour from Eufa and Fifa. And when it came to football hooliganism, the Rangers ICF had a fearsome.reputation. I know down South there were some confident firms, they wouldn't last 5mins with Rangers ..they don't do sand-dancing in the street, bouncing around shouting C'MON THEN ..No, they would just surround you and stab you forty times and leave you in the road! Just be thankful Rangers only visited England and didn't play in it! Every time they went to England it ended in chaos.
I'm not arguing who is worse between the two sets of supporters, the sectarian hatred is on a completely different level from anything in England (whichever era you choose). I was stating that whenever the 2 clubs played in England back in late 60s and 70s they would turn out in force and take over.. Rangers may well have been worse, ,but there were violent incident involving Celtic hooligans reported at Anfield 1966, St Andrews1975 and of course Turf Moor in 1983
its amazing how this whole scenario newcastle fans did NOTHING and were complete angels, which is far far from the truth...there were faults on both sides and trouble was instigated before throughout and after the match.....St James was a cracking ground to play football in and if you are a visiting team its can also be intimidating when its packed...but then again, Ibrox is renowned for this...in a lot of these inciednets the police dont help themselves by being brutal with fans, and even instigating a lot of situations...and even leading to the death of many because they are incapable...RIP the 96
