  • The last part of my six-part series on denominations and their future comes out today. These conversations have been heavy because they represent important issues for our time. Denominations are at a crossroads. Today I finish with a conversation with Rob Renfroe who is the president of Good News for United Methodists.

Five years of payment toward retirement fund, no problem. Five years of apportionment payments, no problem. Payment of half your assets including building value. No way most churches, especially small or moderate size churches. So we are really forced to stay. Many of these churches have a cemetery with generations of members families' interred. These members can't walk away.
As Bishops sieze assets money will be plush but when that runs out apportionments will rise and churches will begin to fail financially and close. Whether 50 or 100 years the Methodist will be a memory.

Andy, I really liked hearing Rob in this setting, not the "canned" setting he's so often relegated to. Also, I am so thankful to think about out church and the young people who are committed to the One Gospel and not caving to a soft scripture that so many of their generation are. And lastly, oh to be 20 years younger...I'd be all about that Course of Study. That will be such a gift to the churches. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do personally and through WBS.

My maternal grandfather was a faithful evangelical pastor in the UMC, and was saved through the YMCA. How about that! In the paraphrased words of the immortal Rich Mullins, God can use who He wants to use, an angel or a donkey, and maybe even you and me!
