AMAZING RESTORATION of a TRASHED mid century desk - ODIE’S OIL on teak

  • There are a couple of things I'd do differently were I to do this all over again. I skipped the oxalic acid on the dark water ring, and probably shouldn't have. In fact, I might redo that small section before I sell the piece. The other thing I'd have changed.. is that I would have replaced a rectangular section of veneer over the large hole and the area where the veneer was missing for some reason. It would have been a much better blend into the new finish than trying to use filler etc. Sadly, it wasn't an option at the moment, so it is what it is. haha. Even so... this piece is a million times better than it was and I'm happy to have kept it from ended up in the landfill! PLUS- I had this really cool teak chair in storage, JUST WAITING for another teak desk to come along. They go perfectly together!
This beat up, marked up desk was FREE on FB Marketplace. I knew right away it was a Domino Møbler piece, but it had been "modified".. the right hand set of drawers was completely removed, there were holes drilled all over the piece, and someone had used metal brackets screwed into everything to hold it together.
I knew from having worked on these desks previously that they are usually pretty sturdy, so I was happy not to have to use any of those brackets (filled all the holes) and the two right legs were supportive enough that I didn't need to re-attach their modified cross piece.

That desk went from being completely forgettable to a beautiful piece of furniture! Also, I think even a restored piece of vintage furniture shouldn't be totally perfect; it's those small imperfections that give it character and tell a story about its life.

My parents had 2 huge credenza and hutch units which my daughter now has. The finish is so dry and faded I've given her my blessing to paint these once beautiful teak units. After watching this video, I am sending her the Odies information. She LOVES the teak and you've convinced me these heirloom pieces have a chance for new life.

Hi Angie, I hope you got your tea's ok, I'm a bit confused on Canadian money & ours, but my best friend is from Canada so I will have her explain it all to me! I'm 71 & she is 72 & we have been friends since she moved here from Vancouver when she was 11 yrs old, I told her how much I loved to watch you create master pieces, she said Canadians do it better!LOL!!! I taught her how to paint & she taught me how to sew & she kept making me tear my stitches out & do it right, I just called her names!LOL! I shared some of your videos with our little flipping furniture group so I hope some of them come & see you, by the way, this piece was breath taking also! I loved how you put one piece on the 4 wheeler & the piece you were working on, on top of that, I have crippling arthritis of the spine & it really hurts my back the way I'm doing it now. Thank you for so much!

A quick update from last year, when this video was posted! Meanwhile, Odie's has an improved formula that cures the quickest, therefore allow to cure for 1 to 3 days before you expose to liquids, you can use your piece immediately but don't clean or expose it to liquids until fully cured! And, a good tip you can match your color filler using our stains/ powdered pigments!
Kudos Angie to your amazing work!

Oh my heavens! I often love what you do with refinishing furniture and bringing things back to life (I'm not a MC fan, but you are beginning to turn me into one!). This desk is fabulous! The color of that teak is absolutely gorgeous!!! Terrific job! I agree that a piece that is old shouldn't look absolutely perfect - if it did, it would look fake, imo. If, at my age, I didn't have a few wrinkles I would look fake, right? So why shouldn't it be the same with furniture - it has lived and had a life already and small imperfections give it character and lets the furniture share some of its story with us. Gorgeous job, Angie!

I had the 2 drawer version of this desk as a kid, I wish I still had it! Outstanding job yet again!

Dashner was the first furniture restoration channel I ever saw. I was hooked. This piece is magnificent. The chair completes it. 👩‍🍳💋

Wow! And, that chair compliments the desk so well. Looks amazing. I think Odie's oil is just the thing for an old oak dresser I have that needs some loving care.
