Re Umme Waseem's question, there are such things as phenolic acids. These contain the phenol group AND the carboxylic acid group. So we can't call benzoic acid phenolic acid. Hope this helps
Does it have to be the longest continuous carbon chain, or the longest continuous carbon chain that is attached to the carboxyl group. I think it’s the second as if the carboxyl group carbon isn’t in the longest continuous chain then you can’t number it.
